SERENADING THE NEIGHBORS A loud home or car sound system might be music to your ears, but your neighbors may not appreciate the serenade. Please remember to keep the volume turned down, and pay special attention to the bass. Thanks for keeping in tune with our community. THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE One legend tells of Valentine, a priest who was executed for secretly performing marriages for young lovers. Roman Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage for young men, deciding single men made better soldiers. Valentine left a farewell note for his jailer’s daughter, who had befriended him, signing it, “From your Valentine.” For his service, Valentine was named a saint after his death. Chihuly in the Garden F iery crimson and yellow glass towers, icy-blue spikes, dazzling neon panels, and gleaming metallic globes are set against the natural earth tones of our Sonoran Desert. It’s been five years since Dale Chihuly came to the red buttes of Papago Park to blend the textures, vibrant colors, and grand scale of his amazing glass works of art with the beautiful desert landscape of the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, but now he’s back. It took no less than six, 53-foot trailer trucks to transport his new and “reimagined” glass art, armatures, and tools necessary to put together this extraordinary exhibit. This year’s exhibit opened in November 2013 and will run through May 18, 2014. It features 21 Chihuly installations of his artwork that can be viewed even during late evening hours this spring. If you’re not familiar with him, Dale Chihuly (72) is something of a world-renowned rock star in the field of hand-blown glass art. His works of art have been showcased and “installed” among the live plant exhibits throughout the Garden. Many of his creations are comprised of hundreds of uniquely-crafted glass and polyvitro pieces that must be assembled by his staff. The largest work on display, Summer Sun, is made up of 2,000 individual glass pieces alone. It can take up to four days to meticulously assemble one work of art. After a couple of unfortunate accidents in the ’70s left Chihuly unable to do his own glassblowing, he developed a team method of creating his art. He now designs and experiments with the art in his Seattle studio and orchestrates his elite team of artists, designers, and installers to help him realize his visions. Then, with the water running, feed a dozen ice cubes down the disposal. Repeat if necessary. For a refreshing, clean scent, follow with baking soda or fresh lemon peel. SMOKE DETECTOR For your safety, each home is equipped with a smoke detector. Please check your system every month by pressing the test button located on the detector. A loud noise means the alarm is working. If there is no sound, be sure to let us know. For assistance in checking your smoke detector, just give us a call. A TOUCH OF ROMANCE v Candles add a romantic touch but must be used with caution. Place each candle in a sturdy holder that is big enough to catch dripping wax. To reduce smoke and soot, keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch. Always extinguish lit candles before leaving home or retiring for the night. Keep candles and matches away from children.
