Philanthropic Opportunities Airlie Gardens is a 67-acre public garden owned and operated by New Hanover County. Over 100 years old, Airlie is a historic southern garden filled with beautiful plantings. The Garden was established at the turn of the last century by Sarah and Pembroke Jones, as a private getaway showplace. Visitors today experience the same garden environment that Mrs. Jones’ guests would have enjoyed whole attending a party at her home. Wandering through this natural woodland garden, you will glimpse the Airlie lake through the woods and azaleas, admire the camellia garden and stand in awe on the “great lawn” as you gaze at the 467-year old Airlie Oak (established 1545). Airlie offers more than a showcase of horticulture and history. Located on Bradley Creek, a tidal saltwater creek, the Gardens are a remarkable resource for understanding the ecology of Southeastern North Carolina. Experience the union of history, horticulture, and ecology at Airlie Gardens . The Summer Concert Series More than 20,000 guests enjoy the Airlie Concerts each year! The Summer Concert Series hosted at Airlie Gardens attracts more than 2,000 people each concert. The first and third Friday of each month, May-September, guests enjoy a variety of music styles on the beautiful Oak Lawn. Guests bring friends, libations, chairs and snacks to enjoy as local bands entertain the crowd. This is a great way to reach families, retirees, and business people as they come out to enjoy the music. Beginning around 1905, The Joneses hosted extravagant oyster roasts on the property. Guests came from far and near to enjoy the warm southern climate and celebrate a local delicacy. This tradition was revived in 2000, after Airlie opened to the public, and has become our most important annual fund raising event. Proceeds from this event support our environmental education programs, which is fitting, since the oyster plays such a strong role in our coastal eco-system. Each October, as hundreds of guests ready their oyster knives and celebrate the oyster; they are also helping advance environmental education programs at Airlie. This year’s proceeds will fund a transformation of the Airlie classroom into an immersive learning environment. The walls will jump out with graphics about the eco-systems within Airlie, terrariums will hold reptiles, amphibians and insects found in Airlie, and state of the art electronics will bring the classroom to life!
