need to be properly considered before we move ahead with closure. Can you therefore put all
preparations for closure on hold until these enquiries are made. Michelle - I will expand on this when we

Splash Pool Business Case vO.1 draft
Michelle Adams
julie Seddon. Brett Young, Mark Cocker

Hi Julie,
Since our discussion on friday last week I have worked with Brett to revisit the information received
detailing the income breakdown for the pool. The income taken from the pool is as follows:
[Leason Income
1£60,043
IOther Pool Income
1£213,542
iTotal
1£273,585
As you can see the lesson income is less than the total revenue received from other users. I believe that
originally the classifications for income streams was inaccurate. If we transfer these lessons to other sites
in the City I would anticipate that at best we would retain 50% of the income. This is due to the current
capacity to accommodate these customers other sites, type of swimming award varies from site to site
and the experience of very shallow water etc for these types of lessons will be not be comparable with
other sites.
I have looked again at the secondary spend figure and can confirm that this is an accurate reflection of
income that would be lost. This figure has been calculated based on throughput for the pool which is 55%
of the overall facility throughput. The figure of £79,950 secondary spend represents approximately 50% of
the overall income received on cafe/vending. Within this type of environment it is typical that the greater
number of users utilising cafe/vending services are those from the wets ide rather than other areas in the
centre.
I hope this satisfies your queries and please let me know if you require any further information.
Thanks,
Michelle
Julie Seddon (11/02/2008 10:18):
>Hi Michelle - I think some of the options put forward by Mark are potentially good ones and need to be
explored further. We can discuss at next 1-1.
>In the meantime, could you clarify a few points. How much income approx do you think we would retain
by transferring swimming lessons to other centres. Also, think the income lost from secondary sales
seems high. What is your view? Regards, julie.

Dear Councillor Garner,
The information you require is as follows:
Information provided is for a full year - 2006/7
Annual income for the centre - £745,987
An nual costs for the centre - £ 1,447,197
Annual deficit for the centre - £701,210
Please note that in addition to this for year 2007/8 there is now the £160k one off cost required
for maintenance backlog and £125k year on year maintenance costs required. We would retain
some of the income from swimming lessons as these would reallocated across to other City
pools where possible.
Please see attached information for details re ethnic breakdown for all users and also age
breakdown for all users. This information has been extracted from our new data management
system which was installed in May 2007 so this represents 10 months information for users
who have been registered on the system so far. Prior to the installation of Gladstone this
information was not available.
Hope this helps.
Many thanks,

Hi Julie,
I have already passed the complaints received so far through to Corporate Communications(Dan
Barton/Richard Radcliffe) and we are working together to formulate a standard response where possible.
As soon as this has been completed I will forward through to you. We will also be discussing how the
communications process will be managed now that the closure has been confimed.
Thanks,
Michelle

I am wrh:ing to express my concern
at the Dimension leisure centre.
about
Mrs Adams,
Mrs Seddon,
the proposed
closure
of the
>"

It has been pointed out, via the sentinel newspaper,
that alternatives
are available

are not real alternatives
for at least one group of users.

take my grandchildren,
aged 3 years and 1 year 3 months, to Dimensions
each
Tuesday evening. They enjoy being able co safety run about in the shallow water and
are learning to swim and venture out ~nco the deeper water and generally
'have a fun
time' .

alternatives
council venues are more traditional swimming pools, rectangular
with shallow and deep ends. Even the shallow end is too deep for my 1 year old
granddaughter.

higher cost.

to gauge public reaction to these proposals
-very recently announced;
it seems that
the closure could be a matter of weeks away.
»Personally
I wish to see the splash pool remain open, not just for my grandchildren
but all those young families in stoke who cannot afford the COStS of the water world
alterat::ve.
