COVER STORY FASTNET ROCK WEANLING COLT TOPS DAY ONE
MONDAY 22 june 2015 ANZ
“I am very excited to have managed to secure a colt of this quality
and who will lead my draft of yearlings to be offered next year,” Hyde
Park Bloodstock’s Gareth Hawthorn told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“He is the epitome of Fastnet Rock and is out of the exciting young
up and coming and very well performed mare in Festival Princess.
“I felt he was one of the most athletic and balanced foals on the
complex.
“He will return to our fam in the Waikato and I look forward to
seeing him progress into an outstanding yearling sales prospect.”
The colt was consigned by Erinvale Thoroughbreds as agent who
sold four weanlings yesterday and were happy with the sale of Lot 15.
“The sale was quite strong and the nicer horses sold really well,”
John Kenneally told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“We were happy with the $150,000 for Lot 15 and have another
Fastnet colt selling tomorrow (Monday) and would expect a similar result.
“There were plenty of buyers at the sale and (the market here) has
followed the strong trade as had been seen all year.”
The second highest price yesterday came later in the day when
William Inglis as Agent secured Lot 126 for $130,000 for a New
Zealand-based client.
The 28 August-foaled colt is from the second crop of Smart

Missile (Fastnet Rock) and is the third foal out of the winning mare
Rain Shadow (Bianconi). The colt’s second dam, Turn To Rain (Family
Ties), was a five time winner and produced three other winners
including the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) winner Rain
Gauge (Kenvain).
“When we left home we were not expecting this,” said McKnight.
“We went down on Thursday. We started parading and as soon
we had the first few parades, the comments were positive and the

COVER STORY FASTNET ROCK WEANLING COLT TOPS DAY ONE
MONDAY 22 june 2015 ANZ
“He was a big strong individual, very correct and had a touch of the
right pedigree. The Smart Missiles have sold very well and everybody
seemed to be picking those ones out. By the time last night came I
was just exhausted with showing the horse, he had that many views.
“My hopes had grown and grown and gone sky high that we might
get a good result and it turned out that way,” he added.
Asked about the sale, McKnight added: “The results overall I
would think are quite satisfactory. Once again it’s becoming part and
parcel that if you have a nice type of horse with a bit of pedigree then I
think you get well and truly overs. The people who have the run of the
mill horse on type and pedigree, then they are probably taking unders
for these sales and that’s the way the market is going.”
Two further lots sold for six figures yesterday, with two fillies both
making $100,000.
The first of these came when Lot 56, a filly by Foxwedge (Fastnet
Rock), sold to Wattle Grove Thoroughbreds from Shadwell Farm.
Lot 56 Foxwedge - Khepri filly
INGLIS
The filly will be re-offered next year with Ian Macpherson telling
ANZ Bloodstock News that he thought she was the pick of the sale.
“I thought the Foxwedge filly was the pick of the sale and you
always have to pay for quality. I have not selected a sale for her yet,”
Macpherson said.
The 16 August-foaled brown filly is out of the Group Two placed
mare Khepri (Faltaat) who to date has produced one winner from one
runner in the Hong Kong-trained Redwood Baby (High Chaparral).
She had proved popular during inspections and her vendors had
a good day, selling all eight of the weanlings that they offered for a

again proving nice weanlings sell well here,” Shadwell Farm’s Phillip
Wells told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“The Khepri filly was in our opinion the best filly in the sale and
sold accordingly. She paraded over 80 times per day, never missing
a beat.
“We are a weanling specialist with a small group of select clients
who supply us with quality weanlings. Knowing the market well here
in Victoria and having a great base of return clientele has always held
us in good stead,” he added.
The second filly to sell for $100,000 yesterday came only four lots
later when Paul Willetts Bloodstock Consultancy purchased Lot 60.
Offered by Makybe, the bay is by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s
Choice) and is the second foal out of La Dolce Diva (Fusaichi Pegasus),
a daughter of Makybe Diva (Desert King).
Willetts was the leading buyer yesterday, purchasing a further
seven for a total spend of $391,000.
“I came here to buy some nice horses, I have some clients looking
to pinhook and some looking to race, so these weanlings will fill a
range of purposes,” said Willetts.
The leading vendor on Sunday was Burnewang North Pastoral
who sold seven weanlings for a total of $409,000, topped by two lots
who each sold for $90,000.
