TEMS students to Orchard Hill collects for ‘Bundles of Joy’ represent state in international event Orchard Hill School teamed up with the South Windsor Police Department and South Windsor Youth and Family Services to collect items for “Bundles of Joy.” The fifth-grade School Life Committee, led by teacher Karyn Kruzick, organized the event. The students accomplished their goal to fill a police cruiser with baby supplies such as diapers, wipes, ointments, lotions, bath soap, bottles and related supplies. All of the donations went to local residents, as well as The Network Against Domestic Abuse Women’s Shelter, KidSafe CT and First Way Life Center. Robert Betteker reads to students at Pleasant Valley School. Many of South Windsor’s senior citizens visited the elementary schools to read to children. The TEMS Future Problem Solving team of Nate Carr, Lindsey Cartier, Lin Phan and Greg Morneault will represent the state of Connecticut in the Future Problem Solving competition in Indiana in June. The team earned the right to compete in the international competition when they won second place in the state event. SWHS runs French Club for OH Forty-five fourth- and fifth-grade students from Orchard Hill participated in an after-school French Club run by National Honor Society students from SWHS. Students learned the basics of the French language through games, songs and role-playing. SWHS students helped fourth- and fifthgrade students at Orchard Hill School learn the basics of French. Seniors read to students Orchard Hill students line up to help fill a police cruiser with donations for ‘Bundles of Joy.’ PRS combines sports and math Philip R. Smith fifth-graders Jack McClusky and Marcus Rodriguez have been helping math teacher Julie Ratajczak challenge the students with basketball-related math questions. Students in multiple grades have been solving a variety of math questions, such as finding the area and perimeter of a basketball court and finding the mean, or average, of a team’s points during the Math Madness tournament. Winners were picked from those students who submitted the correct answer each week. The first week’s winners were thirdgraders Emma Sanson, Amy DeGrandi, Devon Kevetos and Rebecca Chernik. Winners for the second and third weeks of the competition were fourth-graders Humza Bhura, Charlie Keen, Cooper Castellone and Nick Gattuso. Wapping School honors superintendent Bryan Giansanti’s fourth-grade class at Wapping School honored School Superintendent Dr. Kate Carter during Women’s History Month. Students had been studying successful women, their characteristics and their contributions to society. Carter, who is South Windsor’s first woman superintendent, encouraged the children to do their best in whatever they choose to do, and to empower and encourage others. SWHS names CAS scholar-athletes Seniors Rachel Karlins and Brian Finnegan have been selected as South Windsor High School’s Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, after meeting all of the high academic, athletic and personal performance criteria. School Superintendent Dr. Kate Carter was a guest of the fourth-grade class during Women’s History Month. TEMS teams earn medals at Science Olympiad Eighty-nine Timothy Edwards Middle School students competed to make one of the 15 slots available on the two teams that would go to the Science Olympiad. Having won five consecutive state championships, TEMS was considered the team to beat. In an extremely close competition, TEMS was denied the first-place finish by seven points. In a new recordsetting feat, the two TEMS teams tied for second place and were awarded both second- and a third-place finish. In the eightyear history with the Science Olympiad program, TEMS has earned five firstplace finishes, three second-place and one third-place finish. Earning first-place medals were Michael Fialkoff and Mallika Shekhar, Gloria Yi, Kearra Sarin (two gold medals), Shelby Caron, Greg Morneault, Jake Robinson, Nathan Carr, Rohit Makol, Lili Lu and Devika Menon. Second-place medals were earned by Michael Fialkoff, Mallika Shekhar, Palak Warikoo, Manasha Satheesh, Jake Robinson, Kearra Sarin, Kiran Daggula, Jeff D’Onofrio, Enuma Mokel and Kunal Khattar, Nathan Carr and Rohit Makol. Jessica Bajorek and Jas Pyneni each earned two medals. Third-place medals went to Gloria Yi, Michael Fialkoff, Kiran Daggula, Mallika Shekhar, Jeff D’Onofrio, Kiran Daggula, Reeya Khurana, Forest Fan, Rohit Makol, Jessica Bajorek, Jas Pyneni, Lin Phan and Matt Sullivan.
