H 8 design el Periódico del Azulejo July 2015 ceramitec 2015: Fine Ceramics on Display Is the international key trade fair of the ceramics industry. It covers the entire spectrum of the ceramics industry. The event will be held in October in Munich F ine ceramics are focusing on the aspects of energy efficiency and resource conservation. In the past three years, there has been a great deal of optimization work in the entire process chain. The results will be on display at Ceramitec 2015 on the exhibition grounds of Messe München from 20 to 23 October. Processing technologies for fine ceramics have undergone further development through the adaptation of established machine technology to the specific tasks of the ceramic technology and its raw and processed materials. The reduction of the processing time of sanitary slurries from five days to a maximum of one day, achieved by using high-performance dispersing mixers, is one example that is worth mentioning. Another advantage is that fewer temporary additives are required and casting times are influenced positively. The optimized preparation of color pigments for conversion into ceramic inks in ceramic-coated agitator bead mills has clearly advanced the printing stability and lifetime of inks for digital tile decoration. As a result, cost reductions have become possible. The last few years have witnessed the introduction of digital tile decoration on a large scale. Meanwhile, more than 4000 ink jet printers have been installed worldwide. Digital glazing, which is currently in the market launch phase, is the logical continuation of it. This procedure will contribute to the advancement of production on demand, which is independent from lot sizes. At the same time, it enables tile manufacturers to increase their level of individual cus- Green manufacturing is the common practice in the industry today. In the field of forming technology, topics which were shown as a development trend at ceramitec as early as 20 years ago will be presented in a new shape. For different reasons, they could not establish themselves on an industrial scale at that time. In the field of tableware production, for example, one of these topics is the use of injection molding to fabricate cups; another topic is the use of isostatic pressing technology for the production of washbasins. Meanwhile, there have been considerable achievements with respect to temporary additives, tool Ceramitec takes place every three years at the facilities at Messe München exhibition center, in Germany Development work in the field of thermal processes goes hand in hand with the perennial issue of energy efficiency technology and production flexibility. Therefore, these topics can be presented with convincing cost efficiency today. Development work in the field of thermal processes goes hand in hand with the perennial issue of energy efficiency. The drying of sanitary articles in continuous dryers with dryer guidance system and the integration into the logistics processes of the production plant, for example, represent a new way of efficient sanitary production. Energy management systems of kiln manufacturers have helped achieve energy savings of nearly 50 percent over the past 10 years. In ceramics production, thermal processes require the greatest quantities of energy. Meanwhile, however, it is the current practice to analyze all steps of the process chain and each machine carefully with a view to energy requirements in order to exploit the full optimization potentialities. This color array was formed in the Delft Ceramic School in Holland during the 17th century and has proven to be a timeless pair. After being inspired by the Delft Ceramic School, this trend was brought to the historical kitchens and bathrooms of palaces in the 17th century. The materials were bought from China, and then constructed into tiles by Italian immigrant artisans. The combination of modern patterns in the mix of design and geometry, gives us a contemporary version of this historical trend. With the objective of giving walls and flooring an artisan look, the Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers have created wall tiles with hand-made details. These hand-made tiles blend per- fectly with the blue hues to achieve a seamless vintage look. Luxury and timelessness of noble metals The transfer of technology from other sectors makes possible to achieve special pieces such as metallic tiles obtained by the technique of physical vapor deposition (PVD) that gently incorporates a layer of titanium nanoparticles on the surface of the piece. The result: materials with a high aesthetic value, but that combine great functionality and technological advantages such as high resistance to abrasion and corrosion. H July 2015 el Periódico del Azulejo design 17 Fila offers a complete range of certified products, devised for professional treatment specialists and also suitable, thanks to their effectiveness and ease of use, for end users. HOW TO CLEAN WOOD EFFECT PORCELAIN TILES In this article Fila Surface Care Solutions explains how to clean wood-effect porcelain tiles, one of today’s most popular flooring materials around the world I n this article Fila explains how to clean your wood-effect porcelain tiles, one of today’s most popular flooring materials, which over the last ten years has seen an increasingly more refined evolution in the reproduction of the natural grain of wood. It is in these very grain that dirt tends to stick and is often difficult to clean. To solve this problem, Fila has devised products to guarantee cleaning and protection against dirt for your floor in wood-effect porcelain tiles. FILA DETERDEK The first thing to do is make sure that the floor is really clean, with thorough removal of that at times almost invisible film that inevitably forms after laying of this kind of tile. It is therefore indispensable to use an acid detergent like Deterdek for the initial cleaning, the only product that eliminates all kinds of laying residues (glue, grouting, concrete,…) and guarantees correct initial cleaning. How to use? First of all, wet the floor with a little water, then pour a dilution of Deterdek and hot water (1 litre of product every 5 of water). Work on just a few metres at a time, wait 2-3 minutes and Italian company Fila recommends some simple steps to ensure the beauty of ceramic finishes. rub hard with a flat brush (or single-brush machine). Finally, mop up the residues with a cloth and complete by rinsing with plenty of water. FilaStop Dirt FILACLEANER For daily cleaning of the floor, it is important to use a neutral detergent that does not leave any residue on the surface. For this reason, we recommend using FilaCleaner, a delicate yet effective product, ideal for ordinary maintenance of floors in wood-effect porcelain tiles. Normal detergents, on the other hand, often contain Dilute 25 ml (three capfuls) of FilaCleaner in 5 litres of water and clean the floor. FilaCleaner leaves no residues, does not require rinsing and can be used on any kind of surface. FilaCleaner is the detergent recommended by over 200 manufacturers of porcelain and ceramic tiles and stone, who endorse it in their catalogues for maintenance of their products. But that’s not all, Assoposa, the Italian association of companies of layers and installers of ceramic tiles, recommends FilaCleaner and the other FILA detergents because they are effective and respect both materials and grouting. shine additives that deposit on the floor and over time form unsightly streaks and marks or, even worse, make the surface slightly sticky, therefore attracting dirt even more easily. After cleaning your woodeffect tiles, we recommend protecting them with FilaStop Dirt, a truly effective product that creates a barrier against dirt and therefore making everyday maintenance easier. FilaStop Dirt creates no surface film, it chemically binds to the material without altering its original appearance, it prevents dirt from becoming stuck in the fake grains of wood-effect porcelain tiles, it helps to stop water pooling and makes cleaning of the surface itself easier. H 18 industry el Periódico del Azulejo July 2015 italia grows and first fall from china Italian ceramic industry reports record tile exports in 2014 and total sales amounted to 394.6 million T he 2014 figures for the Italian ceramic industry were unveiled at the Confindustria Ceramica 2015 Members’ Meeting held on 9 June this year. In the year to 31 December 2014 there were 223 manufacturers of ceramic tiles, sanitaryware, tableware and refractory materials operating in Italy with 25,598 employees and a total turnover of 5.687 billion euros, 75% of which was generated by exports. The tile sector continued to account for the majority of turnover at 4.91 billion euros, while the other three segments generated a combined turnover of 773 million euros. In 2014 the Italian tile industry consisted of 150 companies (6 fewer than in 2013) with 19,430 employees (1,107 fewer than in 2013) and a total output of 381.7 million square meters (5% up on 2013). Like the previous year, the sector’s sales exceeded production, allowing it to take a further step towards the gradual rebalancing of warehouse stock. Total sales amounted to 394.6 million sq.m (+1.3%). While the domestic market experienced a further downturn to 80.8 million sq.m (6.6% down on 2013), the export markets continued to recover reaching 313.7 million sq.m (+3.6%). Growth in value terms was even higher. As Chairman The breakdown of Chinese exports by large geographical areas shows that sales increased only in Africa and Oceania Vittorio Borelli pointed out, this was due to the industry’s ability to further raise its average selling price, which now stands at 12.45 €/sq.m (2.6% up on 2013). Export turnover rose by 6.2% to 4.11 billion euros, with an average price of 13.1 €/sq.m (2.5% up on 2013). This result more than compensated for the further fall in turnover in the domestic market (804 million euros, -6.1%), allowing the sector to close the year with a total turnover of 4.91 billion euros (+4%). The sector’s export share reached a record figure of 83.6% in value and 79.5% in volume. As Borelli noted, the increase in average selling price is a direct result of companies’ efforts in the field of product innovation, which enables them to offer products with ever greater added value (to- Asian countries are the main market for Chinese ceramics. day this means primarily large and very large sizes). It is no coincidence that 2014 set another record in terms of technological investments, which at 286.2 million euros absorbed almost 6% of the sector’s total turnover. This was a 27% increase on 2013 and the highest value since 2008. The trend is continuing this year with investments estimated at 250 million euros. uninterrupted growth Meanwhile in 2014 China suffered its first setback in exports, though is remaining well ahead of other ceramics tile exporter countries. After 10 years of uninterrupted growth culminating in record exports of 1,095 million sq.m in 2013, volumes dropped by 2.9% last year to 1,063 million sq.m (a reduction of 32 million sq.m). The breakdown of Chinese exports by large geographical areas shows that sales increased only in Africa and Oceania (by 5.7% and 12.7%, respectively). China suffered a decline in exports to all other areas of the world, including Asia where they fell for the second year running (2.6% in 2013 and -3% in 2014) to reach 552.6 million sq.m, 52% of total Chinese exports. Sales also declined sharply in South America (99.8 million sq.m, -22.8%), largely due to the downturn in Brazil (-46%), while exports to North America remained virtually stable at 82.1 million sq.m (-0.8%) in spite of the fall in sales in the United States (46.8 million sq.m,-2.8%). As for Europe, Chinese exports not only fell for the fourth year running in EU markets (24.5 million sq.m, -7.7%) but also suffered the first decline in non-EU Europe (22.1 million sq.m, -10.8%).
