FROM THE
PRESIDENT
It is with heavy heart that I write this month’s
letter. Just as we went to press last month we lost
one of our founders of the club and most beloved
members – Katie Knight Perry. Many of us, and just
not in the club, but in the triathlon community
around the world knew Katie. Katie as one the
founders of the club and a pioneer in triathlons
was a well accomplished athlete during her
lifetime along with her late husband Ralph. Katie
did many triathlons including numerous Ironman
races. Finishing the Hawaii World Championships in
Kona several times. Most famously finishing
alongside with her husband Ralph both with their
Mad Dog shirts on which was always featured
prominently on the highlight film shown in Hawaii
at the Ironman race pre and post-race dinners for
many years.

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2)
Katie also finished numerous running races and marathons and was a well
accomplished Masters swimmer winning numerous races and holding records. It was
really great and heart warming to see the turnout for the Memorial to Katie at the
Weds Night Swim that the Mad Dogs hosted several weeks ago. A tribute to Katie. We
were able to view many photos of Katie along with videos and some of her awards.
Thanks for providing these items go out to Kathy Morgan, Susan Daniels and Roger
Burke. Many of us had great memories of Katie. We also had many people to tell
stories and what they remembered about Katie that night. Katie was always mostly
positive and encouraging always to others with her smiling face. We all that knew
Katie will miss her and of course that infamous Katie kiss on the cheek that Katie
always greeted us with and the red lipstick marks on our cheek! Katie left a legacy
and many great memories for us all that won’t be forgotten! See pages 9 - 13.
Until Next Month!!

MAD DOG NEWS
- Congratulations to Mad Dogs Don Ardell and Celia Dubey for winning
National Championships in Sprint Duathlon. Celia was also Masters
Champion.
- Sadly, we said “goodbye” to Rene Vallant, his wife, Ella, and his son,
Noah this month as they headed back to Austria after a year’s stay in St.
Petersburg. Rumors are, however, that we have not seen the last of the
Vallants, as Rene may be offered a job as Director in the Physical
Testing Division of USF. Maybe we can stage a big welcome back party
in the early fall.
- We all wish the best to Dave Frazer as he heads to Europe to compete
in Ironman Austria at the end of the month. Ditto to Laura Segrera and
Jonathon Dunford at Ironman Coeur d’ Alene.
- If anyone needs a new wetsuit, XTERRA is having a great sale.
- A reminder — the Mad Dogs are run by volunteers! This is your chance
to help out. We’re looking for Mad Dogs interested on serving on the
Holiday Party Committee. Just e-mail BOD@STPETEMADDOGS.COM

IN MEMORY OF KATIE KNIGHT-PERRY
At the Mad Dog Wednesday night swim on Jun 3rd, 2015, about 130 Mad Dogs
celebrated the life of one of our founders, Katie Knight-Perry. Below are some
memories relayed by Mad Dogs: Mary Ann Wallace
Kathy Morgan and I met Katie and Ralph Perry Labor Day weekend 1992.
We were with a young couple Lonnie and Margie Moore who already knew
Katie and Ralph and they were invited to the Perry's home. We had a
great day and a lot in common. We all loved triathlons.
After that Labor Day outing Kathy and I spent a lot of time with the Perry's.
We trained, raced and howled together. Our first trip to KONA was with
Katie and Ralph Perry 1994. We were roommates. Katie and Ralph had
Page 9

qualified for the Ironman race. They were recognized for a husband and wife
team that had qualified and completed seven Ironman races.
On November 6, 1993 Kathy and I went to the Perry's for dinner. We had
talked about starting a triathlon club. But on that evening it started. We picked
the name St. Pete Mad Dogs. We pick St. Pete because the club needed a
home base. We picked the Mad Dogs because of the morning bikes rides.
Those sprints looked like throwing meat to dogs. "Mad Dogs".
We were almost the St. Pete Lunatics The Logo a Tick in the Moon.
But, the Mad Dog won out. We never dreamed our club would be the largest in
the world.
Katie and Ralph Perry were known National and Internationally. The gave our
club great recognition. They had been in the sport since the 80's.
It was unbelievable how many triathlete friends they had. They were a very
popular couple. They gave our club an International recognition.
Katie, Ralph, Kathy and I never expected our club would touch so many triathletes.
We thought the club would grow to 50 to 100 members. None of us would ever
have dreamed that over 4,000 triathletes have joined our club. So many relationships have
formed. It's a family environment.
In the last few years Katie Perry was training less. I tell all my aging friends "Keep Your
Training Routines". I had breakfast with Katie three weeks ago at Panera's and she was
doing pretty well. About two weeks ago she took a fall and broke her hip. After that surgery
she got an infection. She was having a hard time recovering.
On May 29, 2015, in ICU, she had Cardiac Arrest. We are going to miss her.

Katie, Ralphie, Jackie & Larry Yost, Dan & Vivian DeRussy and a host of others were
looking forward to the 2nd race of the 1997 Gooding’s Triathlon Sprint Series in
Clermont. Katie gently nudged both Jean Goergen (MD# 719) & I to join them that day
. During the awards ceremony, our friends won as usual &, of course, we were very
happy for them. Jean & I arose to head home & Katie said: “Where are you two
going?” She always succeeded in her endeavors. She then reached for her award tile &
shoved it in my hands. Next, she tugged Ralphie’s arm while saying “Ralph, give Jean
your award.” Ralph’s tile to Jean reads First Place (top line) & Male 60-64 (bottom
line). Katie’s to me reads somewhat differently, which when taking center stage in my
awards cabinet, raises a few eyebrows. Katie & Ralph Perry endeared themselves to so
many & we were so blessed. Tom Stevenson SPMD # 282

I am bringing a message from Michigan,
I was asked by Bob and Mary Ranta to convey their thoughts. Katie was a good friend and an
excellent athlete. I enjoyed participating in many events & triathlons, with her.
She always had a kind word for Mary & I.
She will be missed by us both.
Mary & Bob Ranta MD # 928
First and foremost I would like to share a short story with you.
It will only take about 2 minutes and 15 seconds,
However I find it most appropriate for this celebration.
It’s Titled Our Train of Life
At birth we board our train of life and meet our parents. We believe they will always
travel by our side. However, at some station, our parents will step down from the.
Train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the
train, and they will be significant. Siblings, friends, the love of our life, children, and
many others. Some will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so
unnoticed that we won't realize they left their seats.
Our train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, good-byes, and
farewells. A successful ride requires having a good relationship with all
passengers. We must give the best of one self. The mystery is the same to
everyone. We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we
must live in the best way possible,
Thru love, forgiveness, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this
because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat we should
leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on their train of
life.
I believe Katie Perry has shared all of these qualities with many, many others as she
traveled on her train of life and I am sure many others will share their personal
memories of Katie as our celebration of life continues. I wish you a joyful journey on
YOUR train of life by reaping success and giving lots of love. And lastly, I think Katie
felt honored to have each and every one
of us as one of her passengers.

ALOHA
Our life with Katie & Ralph Perry started in 1985 at the Mighty Hampton Triathlon on Long
Island New York over 30 years ago.
She was a pioneer in Triathlons for all women, and a shining star for all to cherish as we try to
embrace her passion.
Our train ride together involved many triathlons and other fond memories, which I would like
to share.
The Mighty Hampton Tri, The Montauk Tri, The Liberty to Liberty, The Hawaii Ironman and
the GOLDEN Torch AWARD from the St. Pete Sr. Games.
As her life story is told we will hear that Katie was and will always be an inspiration to all
including future wanna be triathletes as we carry on this crazy life style thru Katie and Ralph’s
memories. Inclosing I would like to thank Katie for allowing us into her Triathlon Family of Life.
And please Katie watch over all of us as we continue to swim, bike and run in preparation of
our triathlon life style.
Farewell Katie Until Our Paths Cross Again.

Ironman Is On Probation
I want to begin this article by emphasizing to readers that the following is
strictly my opinion and not espoused or endorsed by the St. Pete Mad Dog
Triathlon Club. Some of the background material is from Dan Enfield’s article at
slowtwitch.com. As I find myself halfway through the sixteenth year in this great
sport, I grow increasingly concerned that Ironman, the preeminent and dominant
organization of the sport, is alienating the people who actually race. Prior to 2004
Ironman simply charged licensing fees to other organizations that put on the races.
That year they began to actually own the races. Bought later by a Private Equity
company, the focus became increasing the value of the company in order to resell it
at a profit.
Notice that supporting the racers, both amateurs and professionals, is no longer the
primary objective. I observed that the entry fees were increasing at a much higher
rate than inflation, simply under the concept of supply and demand. If the object is
to make the maximum profit, why not? Let me offer as an example the entry fee
structure for Ironman Texas 2016. One could enter at this year’s race site for $675,
increasing gradually to $775 next February. This is how you encourage people to
register for a less popular event.
Some other concerns/examples:
— Have you noticed how the Ironman pre race/award ceremonies have
become simply an incredibly extended opportunity for the race sponsors to extol
their products ad nauseam? It’s like water drip torture. A race like the Gulf Coast
Triathlon does a much better job of organization and presentation. So, for that
matter, do the XTERRA branded races.
— Last year we were introduced to the All World Athlete Program where
participants in at least two IM events would be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze
status. The more races, and higher places, the higher point totals. This was a great
opportunity to buy your way to All World Athlete status and make even more money
for Ironman. The most insulting and patronizing thing, however, was when we
began receiving monthly report cards this year listing our progress (or lack thereof)
in reinstating our All World Athlete status in 2015.
— Ironman University has been established (in competition with USAT) to
qualify coaches to be listed as Ironman qualified on their site, and, of course,
to make more money for Ironman — another shot at USAT?
Page 16
VOLUME 21 ISSUE 7
JUL - 2015
An 18 year old Phys Ed major can take the course an be anointed an Ironman
Coach without ever completing even a sprint triathlon. Ironman says the new coach
will list their experience, and triathletes can make a choice. Is this really fair to the
applicant?
— Ironman recently announced that the 2017 Ironman 70.3 World
Championships would be split into 2 days — men on one day and women on
another day. Allegedly, this was so that men could receive special focus on one day
and women on another. Later, they mention that this would give 4500 athletes the
opportunity to compete. Give me a break — how many men dream of competing in
a race with no women? Why not just admit that this is a chance to double Ironman’s
profit? If 4500 triathletes qualify, is it really a World Championship? Of course
if a couple is competing this means a longer stay, the alarm clock going off at 0330
two days in a row, and even more money for Ironman. To be fair, though, a couple
with children could trade off parenting and babysitting duties in a two day event. If
triathletes buy into this, I predict that a two day sexually segregated Kona
event is next.
— As I write this article, Ironman is pushing to displace Challenge from their
races in the Middle East. Their attempt to crowd out USAT by starting the 5150
series went almost nowhere. Think about how much a single cable TV company
would serve the interests of consumers in the United States.
— Ironman has decided to reduce the number of races that would award
money to professionals (but more places in less races). This is forcing young local
pros to travel further at greater expense to try to make a living. A suspicious person
might even think that Ironman is nudging professionals out of the sport because
they don’t contribute as much to the bottom line as amateurs. I, for one, certainly
hope not.
So what is a person to do? Look, I understand that many triathletes want to
participate in famous, well-publicized events under the Ironman brand. If that is
where your heart is, I encourage you to go for it. In full disclosure, this year Gail and
I have already committed to racing in Austria at the Ironman 70.3 World
Championships in August. Next year, even though aging up, I will focus on local
races and longer events sponsored by Challenge/Rev3, HITS and other
independent race promoters. It is simply feels better to me to race for and spend
my money with organizations that still put the triathlete first.
Ironman is on probation until I feel the love again.
