Attracting new members is always critical to the health and future success of all clubs, and SYC is no exception. We will do an appropriate level of advertising, but we all know that nothing beats a “word-of-mouth” recommendation, which means that all members have a part to play in attracting new members. Ideally, members would accompany interested friends to the Open House, but if you cannot, please encourage them to come on their own. Rear Commodore’s Report: Deanna Flanagan Dear Members, I can’t believe its August already; time seems to fly by very quickly in the summer! July brought us the opening of the upstairs bar on Friday & Saturday nights. I hope you came up and enjoyed one of those delicious cocktail specials on Friday nights. I tried two different ones and they were yummy! Please continue to support upstairs as well. We also had another SYC favorite, duo/singer guitarists “Pocket Change”, entertain us at dinner service on July 15th. The Alzheimer’s Event on Saturday, July 16th hosted 101 As always our club's members people. The pig roast was are its best ambassadors, so delicious, the beautiful Hawaiian please invite your friends and neighbors to join us at our Open dancers and Samoan fire eater dancer entertained the crowd, House Friday, August 12th during Happy Hour from 1600 to and it was quite a show! We also had a couple of Sagamore 1900 hours on the second floor, members joining in a hula line 2 AUGUST, 2016! dance, but I will not mention names who adorned hula skirts! And the DJ played the evening away. There was a silent auction upstairs, twenty-four great raffle prizes downstairs, a separate raffle of $1000 gift certificate for running rigging (in stock New England roping that included splicing) donated from our neighbor OBMC. We had a few Sagamore winners and fun was had by all. I would like to thank all the SYC members who supported this very worthy cause and to Sagamore members, Trish and Les Gillen, Georgia and Mike Gehrling who donated and obtained raffles, and to Georgia for her help in doing up the baskets with me. Thank you to Andy Scotlock and Todd Field for all their help and to Maryellen and Tony Miraglia who donated their time as well. Saturday, July 23rd “Southbound” Country Band played the night away along with professional teachers giving dance lessons. Never knew how many talented dancers we had out there! Everyone enjoyed the night singing and dancing away from older to younger ones. We had a guest singer, Mary Brosky, from “Mid Life Crisis” sing an amazing country song along with the band. Took time off in July to sail away for ten days with the Bradley’s to watch the fireworks at Three Mile Harbor, visit Montauk Yacht Club, Mystic Seaport, and our favorite stop in Essex CT for dinner at the Griswald Inn. Anyone who would like copies of their individual bills should request them when you sign the bill. in which the Club is billed for 30 new member families each year and our membership is the strongest it’s been in many years. At this time, there is a particular emphasis on attracting new Regular boating members. AUGUST, 2016 SYC EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: A Monthly Column by Kerriann Brosky AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIAN SIPLE – SYC Launch Driver Christian is twenty-five years old, and was born and raised in Oyster Bay, where he currently lives. His parents Dennis and Susan Siple have been Sagamore members since 2001. Kerriann – How long have you worked at Sagamore? Christian – Six years. Kerriann – Where did you go to school? Christian – I went to Oyster Bay High School, and then I went to Nassau for two years, then I took a year off, and then I went to C.W. Post for two years. I graduated from Post and got my BA in Psychology. I was in meteorology before that. Kerriann – How did you get into launch driving? Christian – I always like boats and being on the water, and my parents got me into it. I found out I really enjoyed it. I took a sixteen hour course out of SUNY Maritime, and I passed that test there. That was in the spring, I think it was 2010, and then that summer I started working at Sagamore. Kerriann – How many hours do you work? Christian – I average about seventy hours a week. Kerriann – Do you do any other kind of work besides this? Christian – I clean boat bottoms which I took over from Billy Friedman. I started working with him last year, and then I took over the entire thing this year. Kerriann – What do you do in the winter time when you’re not doing launch driving? Christian – Well, I had been going to school, but now I am done with that, so I’m going to have to find another job. Kerriann – Do you have any idea what you’d like to do? 7 ! AUGUST, 2016 Christian – Maybe Human Resources. Kerriann – What do you like about being a launch driver? Christian – Almost everything. Being outside – it’s the best job. Getting a real job after this is going to be tough. Kerriann – What do you like about Sagamore in particular? Christian – The people, and the fact that I am outside and not confined to a desk with someone looking over my shoulder. Kerriann – What is challenging about your job? Christian – Not too much. Maybe when it’s a holiday, and it’s busy with members, and then on top of that you have transients that come in and you have to deal with that. You have to know what mooring field, sometimes escort them to moorings, and then you’re dealing with people that you don’t know, and that can be challenging in itself. Kerriann – I know you boat for pleasure, so what do you like about boating? Christian – The freedom. I grew up on sailboats and power boats. My parents didn’t have a sailboat, but my friends did, so I started sailing when I was twelve. I was on a sailboat more in my teen years than I was on a power boat. I like them both. I don’t have a preference. Being out on the water – it’s all great. Kerriann – What are some of your goals for the future? Christian – Basically to be on my own, supporting myself, having my own place. Expanding the boat bottom business. Kerriann – You travel a lot also, correct? Christian – Yes, my most recent trip was to Hawaii for three weeks. For about three years I went on road trips to Colorado, and I would stay in Colorado for a month. I’ve travelled south. Kerriann – What else do you like to do? What other interests do you have? Christian – Music. I’m in a band. I play guitar. Our band is named Oyster Babies, and there are four of us. We play all around, all over the Island. We’ve been doing it for about a year and a half. I started learning to play the guitar when I was in the seventh grade. In high school I played football, and I also surf. I go to Long Beach a lot, but it also depends on where the waves are. My dad taught me to surf when I was young. 8 ! Last year we had a sold out crowd of over seventy members and their guests in attendance. We have overwhelmed the club’s capacity for sit down service for dining, as CYC also has to serve their members concurrent with our arrival for dinner. As a consequence this year’s dining will be a buffet style. At the request of the Centerport YC, General Manager all mooring and dining reservations are to be made through Robert Reyes. Please do not call the Centerport Dock master for a mooring reservation. Dining and mooring is limited and will be made available on a first come, first served basis. Please notify Robert of your mooring and dining reservations via email (rreyes@aol.com ). Dinner Dress Code Men – Collared shirt and slacks Women - Skirts or Dress Pants No Jeans, Shorts or T-shirt If not already on file, please provide your boat name, LOA, beam, draft, names of all persons attending, age of any children and a contact cell phone number so that we can prepare the trip roster and make appropriate reservations with CYC. AUGUST, 2016 Cruise to Three Mile Harbor and The Seduction of Hero On Thursday July 14, four vessels from Sagamore Yacht Club departed for a cruise to points east, and a Rendezvous at Three Mile Harbor for a fireworks display on the evening of Saturday, July 16. The cruise was conceived and organized by Vice Commodore Conny Baris. Waterfront, Concerto in Sea and Sing To Me, set out on July 14 with lay-overs in Stratford and Westbrook. Each day brought brisk breezes and fine sailing. The heat was soothed by the swimming pools at Brewers Marinas, and our appetite satisfied by The Tapas Bistro in Westbrook. On our stroll back to our vessels, as we wound our way through the marina and listened to the boat yard dogs yapping at our presence, Elayne taught us a lesson. When you want a dog to stop barking, just say so, and yes, at her command they were silenced. The third day had us sailing through Plum Gut and on to Three Mile Harbor where we were to Rendezvous with Dancing Bear III, Impulse, and Dark Star, and a raft up for the best swimming in the East end of Long Island. It was the kind of day where at your whim you could jump into the water, until the heat dissipated, return to your vessel for your drink of choice, and repeat the routine with your only concern being whether your beer or champagne of choice would be appropriately chilled when you returned to the cockpit. Evening greeted us with a pot luck dinner conjured by the various chefs of our little flotilla, with the hands down favorite being the roast lamb of Elizabeth and Conny. Our dessert was a fireworks festival of sounds and colors against the night sky which offered the convenient gift to the skippers and crew, of not having to move your vessel from the anchorage after the grand finale. When things settled down we were entertained by The Dancing Bear Trio. With the Vice Commodore on bass guitar, and his dear friend Kevin, and brother Drew accompanying him on rhythm and lead, they strummed and sang with honest feelings for the music which they created in the still of that calm anchorage. The following night, to prove that his talents were not limited to folk music, Conny and Elizabeth did honor to Three Bears and danced, and danced and danced to the rhythms of the Reggae band at the East Hampton Point Restaurant, a five minute dinghy ride from our vessels. The following day we weighed anchor and headed for Block Island while the Katalina Kids, Concerto and Waterfront sampled the amenities of the Montauk Yacht Club. It was on this leg of the journey that Jeanne and I grew up. After five years of sailing Sing To Me, we stepped up our game and lived up the potential that we knew Sing To Me had in her from the moment she was launched. As we rounded Bostwick Point at Gardiners Island Zephryus, the west wind lay down her challenge. You think you can sail?, Well I know what Sing To Me is made of, but what is your mettle? Ten knots became 15. Fifteen became a relentless 20. Twenty gusted to 25. Waves built to thee foot, and with both wind, waves and tide on the quarter we were at full sail on a reach at eight knots and surfing to nine. Two hours on there was no respite. As we entered the channel to Block Island Zephryus was still howling down our necks, daring us to come back out and this time try her close hauled. Not today. But four days hence we accepted, and with a number one reef in main and jib, we beat up the Connecticut coast in similar winds and after 16 miles, having passed that test we took up residence in Guilford Yacht Club and washed the salt away in their pool. 16 ! AUGUST, 2016 While we were enjoying Block Island Concerto and Waterfront were sampling the delights of Mystic Seaport. While we were not present for that leg, I have proof that Secretary Schaub and Past Commodore Bradley thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but that is a story for another day. Which brings me to my Seduction. At the utterance of this phrase Jeanne might be saying to her self,. “Damn it Robert, you promised not to write about that….” I am a man of my word, some times, of which this is such a time. No, the seduction which I want to talk about happened at Block Island. Prior to this occasion we had visited that island three times. Each was a one night stand. Pick up a mooring, leave the next morning, wham, bam, thank you…. As it turns out one night stands are not what they are cracked up to be. No, to be really and truly seduced you need the luxury of time. You need the touch of the slow hand. And so we stayed a few nights and discovered the pearl in the oyster. Next to us was anchored a sister ship, a Crealock 34. Her name was Hero. It is a wonderful name for a boat. I love to pry. I relish the inquisition. I had to ask. So I approached the skipper, and asked. How did he come to name his vessel Hero? I had done my research. I am a high minded romantic. Hero is based upon the Greek Myth of Hero and Leander. Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite who resided in Sestos, and Leander, a young man from Abydos on the opposite side of the strait. Leander fell in love with Hero and would swim every night across the Hellespont to be with her. Hero would light a lamp at the top of her tower to guide his way. But one stormy night, the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light. Leander lost his way and was drowned. When Hero saw his dead body, she threw herself to her death to be with him. Obviously this was not a Greek comedy. I fully expected the skipper to tell me how smart I was. As it turns out I am not smart at all. He had named his Crealock 34 Hero after the 1866 S/S Hero a vessel which had carried his great- greatgreat–grandfather to America from the Continent. So I had a choice. Was Block Island my Hero, or his hero? I choose romance over reality. Right then and there Block Island became my Sestos. My Island of love. She seduced me with Crescent Beach. A perfect curvaceous beach with the cleanest water I have seen north of the BVI. The sand spit was immaculate. You could spend a day; a week or a month anchored in the Great Salt Pond, and while away the hours. Watch the comings and goings. Walk the island. Stroll the beaches. Bike to the cliffs. Read a good book, or your favorite book for the third time. The Island had won me over. I was seduced, willingly. The rest of our cruise was memorable and the sailing exceptional. Upon our return home I asked Conny, for his thoughts. He said, “Great to be home … can’t wait to get back out there”. The perfect postscript to a wonderful cruise. My thanks to Vice-Commodore Conny Baris, and his lovely wife Elizabeth, Past Commodore Greg Bradley, Elayne, Secretary Alan Schaub, Janet and of course the Admiral Jeanne, for making this a wonderful cruise. The password is: sagamore2014 18 ! AUGUST, 2016 SYC CONNECTIONS & FAQ’s How do I learn about upcoming events? We rely heavily on email notices to keep members informed about upcoming events, so it is important that we have your current email addresses on file, and yes you can provide us with more than one; send updates of email addresses to Secretary Alan Schaub at “secretary@sagamoreyc.com”. Another important communication tool we use is the Scuttlebutt, which includes information about activities at the club, and who to call for details of each event. You should also be familiar with our website at www.sagamoreyc.com; there you will find a calendar of upcoming events, current and past issues of the Scuttlebutt, and much more. I plan to come down to dine - what do I do? Check the weekly email from Dining Chair Lindsay Thornton for hours and specials, and then go the website to make your reservation on-line at www.sagamoreyc.com/dining/. Please do not call the club to make reservations; we do not currently employ staff to take phone reservations. Can I bring guests to dine? Absolutely, yes. One of the benefits of Membership is to bring family and friends as guests. If your group is going to total 12 or more, you must contact Private Events Chair Kris Lalonde at events@sagamoreyc.com or 516-922-3126. Food & Bar – who should I tip, and when? You should reward our employees who provide excellent service, just as you would in any restaurant. Food servers are tipped separately from the bartenders, in cash; we are not currently set up to allow tips to be put on credit cards or charged to house accounts. What about tips for launch drivers? Regular members acknowledge our professional launch drivers in the manner of their choice; some will tip on each trip, some will tip semi-annually, and or annually at the holiday season. I am thinking of having a party at the club - where do I start? You start by contacting our Private Party Chair Kris Lalonde. They should contact our Membership Chair Kevin Curry by email at “membership@sagamoreyc.com” or phone at 917-881-3933. I have a question about my monthly bill or statement - who do I call? Our bookkeeper, Shelly Fishman, is in the office Mondays and Thursdays; he can be reached by email at bookkeeper@sagamoreyc.com or call the office on Mondays and Thursdays at 516-922-0555. Why do I have to handwrite and mail a check each month? You do not. Many members have found that the most convenient way to pay bills is to take advantage of their banks free on-line bill paying, and they have added Sagamore Yacht Club as a payee. Paying bills on-line through your banks highly secure systems is free, safe, easy, and saves you the cost of postage. I lost my key fob or it has stopped working, how do I get a replacement? Occasionally the key fobs will get “de-magnetized” and no longer function. Our Treasurer, Rich Denby, is also our Security Chair. He can be reached by email at treasurer@sagamoreyc.com. 19 ! AUGUST, 2016 Monthly Dining Minimum Effective January, 2015 Effective January 2015, there is a $50 per month Dining Service minimum spend requirement, as discussed at our Annual Meeting in November. Some frequently asked questions and answers: Will I still get billed $250 annually for “Food Chits”? No, you will see a reduction in your annual billing, as we will no longer charge for “Food Chits”. How does the minimum billing work? Each time you dine, you simply sign, it’s our “Dine and Sign” policy. If you spend more than $50 in a given month, that is the amount you will be billed at the end of the month, plus tax. If you spend exactly $50 in a given month – that is the amount you will be billed at the end of the month, plus tax. If you spend less than $50 in a given month, you will be billed $50, plus tax, that is where the monthly minimum comes into play. You will receive the bill in the mail, which can be paid by check only, no credit cards. What about tips? Tips are not included in regular dining bills, bar bills, or monthly minimum bills, and you are asked to tip your waiters and bartenders in cash each time you dine, except for Special Events. How do tips work for Special Events? Pricing for all Special Events will include Tips, and Sales Tax as well. Do Special Events count towards the monthly minimum? No, they do not. Do bar purchases count towards the monthly minimum? No, they do not. If I bring guests and I sign for their meals, does it count toward the monthly minimum? Yes. Can I “carry-over” unused minimums and make up for it in subsequent months? No, that would not provide the club the benefit of the monthly minimum policy. Why did we change to Monthly Minimums? The new Dining Service offered in 2014 was so well received, we wanted to continue offering it in 2015. After considering numerous options, we implemented the new policy to offer weekend service in the off-season, which allows us to be prepared for ramping up to expanded service in-season. Full-year service involves a cost commitment, and the monthly minimum allows us to cover those costs without increasing dues. What about the bar? There is no minimum monthly spend requirement for bar purchases. You can either settle your bar bill with a credit card each visit, or simply sign. If you sign, the bar purchases will be added to your monthly dining service bill, plus tax. Bar tips are not included in bar bills, and you are asked to tip your server in cash each visit. Also effective for 2015, we will allow members to bring their own bottles of wine to regular dining service, not Special Events, subject to a $20 per bottle corkage fee. Board of Trustees 20 AUGUST, 2016 To All Members Please remember that the Club is for us all to enjoy with fellow members, and the occasional guests, whether friends or family. If you are planning to come to the Club with a total group of 12 or more members/friends/family, you must contact our events coordinator Kris Lalonde at (516)922-3126 or by e-mail at events@sagamoreyc.com to ensure there are no conflicts with scheduled events. For larger groups, the Club is available to Members for private parties, and Kris can assist you with making those arrangements. Within the above guidelines, you are welcome to bring your own food only when food service is not being offered; and you may BYOB only when the bar is not open. Please clean-up and place all trash in the trash receptacles or recycling bins. Parents of young children, for the safety and enjoyment of all, please note that there is no running in the Clubhouse or on the upstairs deck. Pet owners, please note that pets must always be leashed and are never allowed in the Clubhouse. There is no smoking (including E-cigs) in the Clubhouse or while on a launch.
