Pacific Botanicals Growers & Suppliers of High Quality Herbs & Spices Since 1979 Certified Organically Grown by Oregon Tilth Wholesale Catalog Oat Cover Crop Mark’s Update, Toni’s Window, Fresh Harvest Timetable, Wilcrafting, Red Clover, Pricing and Ordering Guidelines Winter-Spring 2015-16 Mark’s Farm Update Greetings from the Applegate Valley, What a year we have had! The season started early with unusually warm temperatures in May and continued with one of the hottest summers I can remember. I am very grateful that even though we are in a drought for our region, we have had the water we needed for our growing season. Being a working farm one never knows what kinds of challenges you may face. This year we have expanded our storage, drying, and milling capacity by adding new infrastructure. In addition to creating the new we also have to take care of what we have. Equipment maintenance is one of the biggest jobs there is on a farm. At the peak of the harvest season we are constantly working with our tractors, harvesters, diggers, choppers, sifters, and a variety of milling equipment, washers, and dryers to make sure everything keeps working smoothly. I don’t hold my breath hoping we won’t have repair issues. It is a given. I have learned to accept it and take it in stride. Thankfully we have a great farm mechanic. As an organic farm we are always dealing with three issues. Weeds, diseases and bugs. Weeds love our warm Southern Oregon climate, and when the weather is good, they grow in abundance. Weed control is our largest expense by far. Bugs can be tricky. Most years we are fine. And other years the bugs find us and have a feast. We have to accept that there will be a certain amount of loss for some crops in some years. It is something that I have learned to accept as an organic farmer. We do our best to predict our crop yields but sometimes it just does not work out the way we planned. It is implicit in organic farming that you let go, even more than in conventional farming, of a certain degree of control. You have to work with nature’s flow instead of imposing your will with the rescue chemistry of spraying all the time. It’s a fine balance. I am happy that more and more people are discovering the benefits of botanical medicine. Demand continues to grow. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this health bringing industry. All of us here are happy to do our part in providing a dependable source for healing medicinals to our customers. Hope your holidays are filled with friends and love. Mark Wheeler, Founder, Pacific Botanicals Toni’s Window The sun is leaning low. A soft glow of warm light in the evening. Morning light comes late. Harder to get up in the dark. Maybe you are experiencing something similar as fall begins its descent and takes us into the inner warmth of cold winter. That is where my thoughts are taking me today. Outside the harvest is coming in earnest. Everyone is working at a run to get the herbs in. One of the things that is so true in my life is how important rest is; where a good nights sleep can be like a two week vacation. I so miss my sleep when I don’t get it. But rest is not just warm cozy dreaming on cold nights. Rest is important to replenish us. It is the same here at the farm. I can’t imagine our field crew is not thinking of their coming time off after all the super early mornings and blazing hot afternoons they’ve put in, and what they will do to renew themselves in their time off. Perhaps we all, to some degree, have a vision of the winter as the time of pulling back, slowing down, going inward, doing quiet things inside alone, or with friends, like family gatherings and not rushing...so much. The earth needs rest as well. A time to renew and replenish. Cover crops like oats and clover and rye will assure that much needed nutrients and organic matter are given back into the soil that has given so much. It’s a time for us to give back to. Presents for the children, thoughts for friends, and time...to chat, reminisce, and reflect on what’s happened over the “fast time of light” in spring and summer. Isn’t it interesting that the word rest comes from the old English and German (raest) meaning mile or league. That state after which we have traveled the long miles when we simply take off our dusty shoes and rest. I wish you good resting this season and hope your time with family and friends is rich and deep. Warm regards and happy holidays, Toni Evans, COO, Pacific Botanicals ATTENTION: We can now notify you by email when an herb is back in stock! Forests, meadows, bluffs by the sea, near stream beds and in mountain valleys here in Oregon are homes to an abundance of pristine healing botanicals. Pacific Botanicals contracts with skilled wildcrafters who harvest these wild botanicals for sale to our customers. Harvesting herbs in remote areas requires a special knowledge and really hard work. It is crucial that wild stands are not over-harvested. The sustainability requirements for our wildcrafters are comprehensive and require written documentation. We only hire wildcrafters who adhere to our rigorous harvesting policies: 1. Must seek areas free of contamination and provide a thorough description of area. 2. Must determine time and percentages of herbs that were last harvested in the area to allow stands to recover. 3. Skillfully separate, garble, dry and clean product. 4. Provide consistent and accurate record keeping to include time, temperature, weather conditions and a detailed description of the land. 5. Provide a personal guarantee that each herb has been ecologically harvested. Obtain a verification of species from a botanist when necessary. Our quality care team also works with the wildcrafters to assure our customers that they always get the highest quality of the correct species. Our founder, Mark Wheeler, is on the advisory board for United Plant Savers whose mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come. We had a wonderful crop of this botanical this year, and we are offering it to our customers at a very competitive cost. Our Nettle herb is harvested in the young vibrant stage and the final cut has very little stem. Its constituents are identical to Nettle leaf. Nettle herb is rich in minerals and contains significant amounts of calcium, magnesium, potassium, silicic acid and iron. Beneficial as a spring tonic and rejuvenator it has a supportive effect on the immune system, circulation, urinary tract, digestive and endocrine systems. Nettle tea, since it is so high in magnesium, can support healthy muscle tone and may reduce muscle cramping. It may reduce the amount of histamine that is produced by the body in response to an allergens. Dr. Andrew Wiel M.D. author of Natural Health/Natural Medicine says he knows of nothing more effective than nettle for allergy relief. His statement is backed up by studies at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Historically Stinging nettle has been used as animal fodder, as vegetarian rennet in cheese making, and is still included in the Passover herbs. The juice was used as a hair rinse and to stimulate hair growth. The plant also has much stronger fibers than cotton and has been used as rope, clothing, as well as other textile materials.
