We certainly have had another interesting month (!!) in August. We did have good turnout for our General Membership Meeting. If you can, please attend our next meeting, September 14th. As the Yeoman becomes a public document, and we do not wish to air “dirty laundry”, please watch your Yahoo Groups e-mail for upcoming items. During August we had a number of events. We had a cruise-in with Petaluma Yacht Club, two rather large Rental as well as our Annual Golf Tournament. Many thanks to Dorothy O’Connor, Wanda Dillon, Ralph Tocci, George Iaconis and Rich Irwin for assisting in these events. This month we will be having First Sunday and cruise-ins for the Seafood Festival – topped off with a PYC Poker Run hosted by the McNichols. Also scheduled are other cruise-ins our Quarterly Birthday/Anniversary Potluck, a dinner for Gary McGrath and a Member Rental at the end of the month. Many thanks to all who have stepped forward and Volunteered to be our new crop of Bartenders. You are doing great. It is recognized that this a rather steep learning curve – so keep up the good work!! Going forward please be patient with our volunteer bartenders as they learn the ropes. They will be doing their best while learning to be as professional as Kandi and Kat. I also want to say another BIG THANK YOU to the members who have stepped up to help bartend. I appreciate your help and could not do this without your support so again, THANK YOU! The schedule has been 99% filled for August and September and I will be working on October, November and December. As I write this, there are still two Fridays and a Saturday left to be filled in September and by the time you read this they hopefully will have been filled. If you are interested and able to help please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me at (925)698-3588 or glensusan08@gmail.com Please also remember that the club docks are being redone and as a result the club parking lot is undergoing some changes. Parking may take a little longer and you may need to walk a little further but PLEASE continue to COME to the club. We need all the support of all our members to keep our club going as the Jewel of the Delta. In keeping with my previous Yeoman reports, this month’s way to say cheers hails from the South Pacific Philippine Islands. When they clink their glasses they say, Mabuhay! (Pronounced mah-boo-hay) From behind the bar, Glen From the Poop Deck Rear Commodore Ken Esse (925) 687-2464 kenesse@astound.net Carol Buyvid FROM THE BAR DECK VICE COMMODORE Glen Abrams 925.432.6812 glensusan08@gmail.com July bar sales were better than the June sales so, THANK YOU for coming out and enjoying your club! Significant changes have occurred in the bar area as many of you are aware. The board of directors arrived at the decision to return to volunteer bartenders to meet the financial needs of the club. Not only was it an agonizing decision to make but also to execute. Kandi and Kat have been with PYC for a long time and I think I can speak for all of us in saying a HUGE THANK YOU for your years of service. We truly appreciate your work and wish you all the best! September 2012 Wow!!! General Meeting Friday night, what a great turnout plus Wednesday night the 15th when we all got together for a special appreciation for Kandi and Kat. We also got to watch our volunteer bartenders trying to work the cash register for the many members ordering those “fancy” cocktails most of us had never heard of. Even with all the challenges, it was great seeing everyone having so much fun. Now that’s Aloha!! Special thanks to Richard Dillon and Max Gonzales for helping and directing the re-finishing the Club’s front porch woodwork. The work party was a little “thin” so we have yet to do the wood railings on the Makai “water side” of the Club. Another work party is being arranged so let me know if you would like to spend a Saturday sanding and staining wood rather than sitting by the pool with a “cool one”?? Keep supporting the Club, bring in new members, volunteer for a Wednesday night dinner or perhaps try your hand at tending bar; whatever, “let’s keep the boat afloat” and have fun doing it. Aloha Ken Esse Enjoy the Yeoman in Color - Visit us on the web at www.pittsburgyc.com Page 4 Pittsburg Yacht Club ~ The Yeoman FROM THE PORT CAPTAIN Raph Tocci (925) 473-9900 rtocci@sbcglobal.net Well, we have made our move to the New Marina (George Lowey Basin) and our ‘old’ marina has been removed. The move went quite well and we are settled in and have two Clubs cruise in so far – and all went well thanks to the Marina Staff. We now have the Seafood Festival coming up September 7th, 8th and the 9th. We also have a big Sea Ray cruise-in September 15th thru the 17th with approximately twenty boats. The Club will be having a catered Barbeque Saturday night and all PYC Members are invited!! For further information, please call me. Ralph Tocci Port Captain GENERAL MEETING MINUTES August 10, 2012 Dahlia Palomino, Secretary The PYC General meeting was called to order at 8:05 by Commodore Carol Buyvid who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call was taken by Secretary Dahlia Palomino, all Officers were present with the exception of Treasure Doris Bedford. All Directors were present with the exception of Lynn Fogelman, Joe Miyamoto and Rich Parks. The minutes of the July meeting were approved as published in the Yeoman. Commodore Carol Buyvid started the meeting by discussing our delinquent redevelopment loan payment. We have been working with the City Oversight Committee, requesting to renegotiate our loan. We were told we would have to wait until the State determines if redevelopment funds would be available this year before we could go forward. Unfortunately the State is not providing any funding this year, therefore we have to work with the State to bring our l oan current. We currently have a Strategic September 2012 Committee in place to address this issue with the State. Any PYC member can join or attend these meetings. We are taking necessary steps to cut our overhead cost and are asking our members to work with us to increase our income, which could include donations and volunteering time to support this club. Several questions were asked and suggestions were made. As expressed in previous meetings our Board, the Strategic Committee and our Members are determined to keep our club operating as flawlessly as in the past. Next, our Nominating Committee that is in place was not properly consummated. That was corrected at our last Board meeting. The committee names were read to the board and a motion was made to accept our current Nominating Committee and the motion was passed. A motion was also made to accept the Nominating Committee candidates as listed, and the motion was passed. Jeannie proceeded to read the Nominating Committees names to our members, and then she read the candidate names. A motion was made by our members to accept the Nominating Committee, the motion was passed. The candidates names will be posted in the September Yeoman and at the following General Meeting candidates can be nominated from the floor. Vice Commodore Glen Abrams reported the bar has been busy. Please contact Glen to be added to the bartender list, he is scheduling bartenders for August and September. Our bar hours were discussed they are posted but we can stay open latter if we are very busy. Rear Commodore Ken Esse has a crew working on the deck rails and can use additional volunteers. We have very talented members that are willing to supervise new comers, so don’t be shy about volunteering for any job. Ken does an amazing job keeping our building in tip top shape. Port Captain Ralph Tocci brought us up to date on the city’s dock replacements. We look forward to the new and improved docks. We are eagerly anticipating the Sea Ray Club cruising in on September 14th; they have quite a few boats singed up. They have a big BBQ dinner planned and we are encouraged to participate. Fleet Captain Dick Dillion asked for any one who wants to attend the Benicia YC Hawaiian Luau to sign up and pay for the event ASAP, as it sells out fast. Our Down Bay Cruse has been planned and is sure to be a memorable event. Treasure Doris Bedford has provided us with the June 30th Balance sheet. This report is available to all members. Staff Commodore Rich Irwin has penny raffle tickets for sale, buy your tickets now. Directors Reports Lynn Fogleman needs volunteer cooks for Wednesday night dinners. You can call Lynn to be put on the schedule. This Wednesday, Rich will cook tacos. Everyone is encouraged to come as this will be in appreciation to Kandy and Kat. It is always nice going up the Petaluma River. Even though we only had 3 boats & 6 people we still had a good time. We enjoyed the boat parade, most were really nice. It is amazing the imagination some people have. It was hotter than bonkers but we survived & still had a good time. It was a great cruise and going & coming the water was fantastic both ways. We'll be cruising to Benicia the week-end of Aug 18th & 19th. They are having a luau. It should be fun. They are a great club, so I'm sure we'll have a great time. We' ll report on this next month. We finally got the Down-Bay Cruise scheduled. It will be from 9/30 -10/12. We'll have a schedule & sign up sheet up on the bulletin board this week. We are getting a good response on this. We are hoping a lot of people will be able to go. Since this is our first down bay we are a little nervous. But I'm sure everything will turn out okay. Remember if you want to drive to any of the places we'll be you are more than welcome. The more the merrier. But then we need to congratulate the Myomoto's on their 25th anniversary, which they celebrated by taking a cruise to Alaska, and Carol Promessi on the birth of her great grandchild in July. I also have some wonderful news: my oldest daughter, Marisha, gave birth to a beautiful healthy girl on Friday August 10th at 3:52 PM, weighing in at 7lb.15 1/2 oz, and 21 inches long. Her husband, Alan, is a very proud father and after 19 years of marriage the family considers this baby a miracle baby! Just because you're not underway, doesn't mean safety isn't an issue. 1. Kids should wear personal flotation devices (PFDs) on the docks. It only takes one slip to fall in the water. Play it safe. 2. Everyone, both kids and adults, should wear boating or other non-slip shoes on the docks and around the grounds of the marina. 3. Don't swim at the marina. This is a big one. Every year there are reports of people swimming in marina waters and being electrocuted or suffering electrical burns. The problem occurs when faulty wiring or electrical equipment on a boat releases electrical currents into the water, causing potential injury or death to nearby swimmers. A second reason is that swimmers at marinas are competing for space with boats—a most unfair competition. Swimmers may not be seen soon enough to avoid a collision and/or they may make it tough for the captain to maneuver his boat. 4. Keep the docks and your boat decks clear of personal gear. A misplaced shoe, a bottle of cleaning fluid, a fishing pole or a small toy could cause someone to trip or fall into the water. That cell phone or those car keys you set down for "just a second" are also at risk. They could quite easily get kicked into the water. 5. Close hatches, covers and compartments on your boat before fueling and open them afterwards. 6. Have a family fire drill. Plan for and practice safely exiting your boat and the dock in case of fire. - Linda Hoff Enjoy the Yeoman in Color - Visit us on the web at www.pittsburgyc.com Page 8 September 2012 Pittsburg Yacht Club ~ The Yeoman Enjoy the Yeoman in Color - Visit us on the web at www.pittsburgyc.com Page 9 Pittsburg Yacht Club ~ The Yeoman September 2012 SLATE OF PYC BOARD NOMINEES FOR 2013 The Nominating Committee ( Jeanne Pedersen – Chair, Sharon Rintala, Richard and Joan Hardy, and Lynn Fogleman) is putting forth the following slate of candidates for the PYC Board of Directors for 2013: Commodore: Glen Abrams Vice Commodore: Ken Esse Rear Commodore: Doris Bedford Directors: 3 positions to be filled Rich Irwin Zeke Lopez Al Camacho Frank Teiche Treasurer: Ben Blair Secretary: Evie Dopart Port Captain: Dave Jordan Richard Dillon Fleet Captain: David Stickney Additional nominations will be taken from the floor at the next General Meeting, September 7, 2012.
