Pi Lambda Phi International Launches New Website
SPRING 2008 A P U B L I C AT I O N O F T H E P I L A M B D A P H I E D U C AT I O N A L F O U N D AT I O N Pi Lambda Phi International Launches New Website Through a special grant made by The Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation, Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity and The Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation recently launched its redesigned website at www.pilambdaphi.org. “We surveyed our undergraduates and alumni to determine how we could best format the new website to provide all with better services and a sense of brotherhood,” explains Gary Sanders, Executive Director of Pi Lambda Phi. “Our undergrads were particularly interested in being able to use the website to assist in recruitment efforts, while alumni wanted a means to be able to keep up to date on fraternity events and chapter news.” Using the information gained from these surveys, Technology Steering Committee members Shawn Upchurch (OH Beta Tau), Steve Bass (PA Omega Gamma), Mike LaBelle (FL Delta Upsilon), Jeff Buhler (FL Delta), Marc Weppner (VA Omicron Zeta) and Dan Scott (IL Tau Delta) got to work designing the new site. What they came up with is a user-friendly site designed for access by all initiated brothers. It features an event calendar, discussion boards, a photo gallery and job boards. The site also lets its users conduct directory searches, contribute to the Foundation online and participate in e-mail centers to keep alumni in touch with one another. Other features include news posts and the ability for members to easily update their personal information. Future enhancements planned for the site include the ability to e-mail newsletters and hot links to alumni association and undergraduate chapter websites. “We also hope to add on-line event registration and make it possible for chapters and chartered alumni associations to create their websites using our site’s features as a base,” adds Sanders. Make time to visit the site today to register and explore all that it has to offer. Pi Lambda Phi has many fantastic things happening within the organization thanks to the quality men who comprise our undergraduate membership and our many committed alumni volunteers. For those who don’t know me, I am a member of our Tau Delta chapter at the University of Illinois and have been a councilman for eight years. I live in Northbrook, Illinois with my wife and three children and practice law in Chicago. I’ve stayed active with our fraternity because of the outstanding friendships I developed while at Illinois, and I hope my involvement will provide future brothers with the same opportunity. New Chapters, New Colonies I’m excited to inform you that — for the first time in nearly six years — we have added several groups to our chapter and colony roll. Our colony at Indiana University of Pennsylvania was chartered this past summer, becoming our first new chapter in seven years. We also added two other colonies: one at the University of Michigan and another at Lockhaven University in Pennsylvania. Lockhaven is new college for us, but Michigan is a re-colonization and I know that the brothers at the Michigan colony would love to hear or receive a visit from our Michigan alums. Finally, we have a strong group growing in our attempt to re-colonize at Western Carolina University and I expect this group to be colonized by the time you read this. Thanks to Tracy Wyatt and the Western Carolina alums for bringing Pi Lambda Phi back to Cullowhee. Once again, I know that the undergraduates would love to hear from you Catamount alums. A Strong Executive Director As many of you know, we hired Gary Sanders as our Director of Chapter Operations in November of 2004 and he’s currently the Executive Director of Pi Lambda Phi. Gary has proven to be one of the great assets of our fraternity. The international headquarters runs very efficiently under his leadership, and he has a great ability to communicate well with both the International Executive Council members and the undergraduate membership. Gary has an endless amount of energy, enthusiasm and ideas. Under his direction, his staff organizes conclaves and conventions as if they were professional event planners. He’s a humble man and always wants to pass the credit for a job well done. One of the nice things about being president is I get the last word(s), and it’s time to give Gary some well deserved credit. Thanks Gary, because we could not do it without you! Fiscally Healthy I’m proud to report that our financial position is strong and, with Gary’s leadership and the Council’s supervision, we have kept our membership dues in check and still have managed to meet our obligations. While this may seem easy to sum up in one sentence, it’s not easy to accomplish. The fraternity world is a competitive place and we work hard to keep our dues in line with other organizations so we don’t handcuff our undergraduate brothers when recruiting new members. Keeping dues low also means watching our expenses very carefully and our staff does an excellent job maintaining our budget. I believe we have a great budgetary model in place that will keep us moving forward financially and permit us to continue serving our undergraduate brothers. My Goals for This Fraternity When I assumed this presidency, I gave a great amount of thought to how I would want my tenure judged. Two things came to mind. First, I wanted to see our chapter roll grow once again; after my predecessors steered us out of harm’s way, we are finally in a position to add new groups. Second, I wanted the council to operate a little differently by utilizing committees that consist of many non-council members; it’s my belief that we are a stronger organization when we receive input and ideas from all of our members. I want to continue to involve alumni who are not council members, not just by rotating councilmen, but by creating committees on which you can serve the fraternity. I convinced my fellow councilmen without much opposition that Pi Lambda Phi would benefit from annual planning sessions. We have held two such sessions and they have been incredibly helpful in focusing our efforts on committee work and recruiting new committee members. We’ll be holding our third planning session the weekend of May 31st in Baltimore and all brothers are welcome to join us. Please check the website or call headquarters for details. If you have any interest in participating at the international level, please contact Gary Sanders or any of the councilmen. For those of you who are actively involved with Pi Lambda Phi — whether locally, regionally or internationally — thank you for continuing to support our fraternity. If any of you are thinking about getting involved, please do, as you will find the benefits incredibly rewarding. -- Dan Scott, President Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity The Frater | Spring 2008 A PUBLICATION OF THE PI LAMBDA PHI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Chapter Spotlight: University of Florida — FL Delta The Fall of 2007 was one of the lowest times for the Florida Delta chapter since its re-establishment in 2000. A risk management violation prior to rush lead to the chapter’s suspension and loss of the potential new member class. The chapter leadership was devastated and many thought they were going to have to fold. Instead of falling victim to negativity, the brothers decided that the punishment was actually a “blessing in disguise.” “The situation really gave us a chance to stand back and take a good look at the chapter as a whole. Certain values got lost over the years, but last semester we found out what’s most important to us,” says Ricky Cuellar (Archon). “Instead of collapsing at the site of our consequences, our chapter immediately chose to view the sanctions as an opportunity to revisit and embrace the values and ideals we took an oath to uphold,” adds Romano Muniz (Rex). “As a result of our determination, we revamped the culture of our brotherhood and set higher expectations for future brothers.” The chapter set a goal of 20 new members for the spring 2008 rush. Although they had never recruited nearly that many new members at one time for spring rush, they knew if they worked hard they could do it. And their efforts paid off. The chapter achieved its goal of 20 new members and many believe it’s their best new member class ever. “I can already recognize their capability of taking on leadership positions within the fraternity upon initiation and leading our chapter to achieving bigger and better feats,” says Harris Cohen (Marshall). The future looks bright for the University of Florida Delta chapter; we hope they’ll continue to improve and remember the important lessons learned “the hard way” not so long ago. Founders’ Day Is March 21st Beta Chapter Founders’ Day is the time to show your pride in being a Pi Lam. On March 21, 1895 the first non-sectarian fraternity was established at Yale University. The rest is history! Pi Lambda Phi now boasts 36 chapters and three colonies! The time is coming up to celebrate the three founding fathers and their success in establishing our fraternity. Founders’ Day is celebrated in a variety of ways. On campuses, chapters will use this as an occasion to go out to dinner as a brotherhood. On other campuses in the past, chapters have held seminars open to the public encouraging dialog, understanding and diversity. We are encouraging every brother to celebrate this occasion in one way or another and to take advantage of this “holiday” as a way to connect with your alumni. This year, your Foundation is asking every brother — undergraduate and alumni — to show our unity by wearing your letters in some way on March 21st. If you don’t have any Pi Lambda Phi “stuff,” we encourage you to log onto www.pilambdaphi.org and check out the “merchandise” section. You can also check out www.greekgear.com, www.greek101.com and www.spirit.cc for more great Pi Lambda Phi gear. It would be terrific if this would be the way alumni might meet by seeing each other with their letters! We would like to feature photographs of brothers participating in this effort in the Next issue of The Frater and/or on the website, so please send your .jpgs to foundation@pilambdaphi.org. If you have a suggestion as to how to best celebrate this event in the future, please share your ideas on the bulletin board at www.pilambdaphi.org. The Frater | Spring 2008 The Pi Lambda Creed That all men are created free and equal That no society of men can flourish unless members of that society are endowed with the opportunities and privileges of freedom That freedom implies the elimination of prejudice That the elimination of prejudice means a better understanding ‘twixt men That it is incumbent upon me to fight for such freedom, even with my life That it is incumbent upon me, in my personal life, to be devoted to the highest standards of honesty and justice That because my country is dedicated to the highest standards of freedom and justice for all men of all creeds, I hereby pledge allegiance to my country and to its national symbol Part of the mission of the Foundation is dedicated to supporting the objectives of the Creed in the Fraternity and in the world in which we all live. If you have ideas on how we may best accomplish this mission, please contact us at foundation@pilambdaphi.org. 3 A PUBLICATION OF THE PI LAMBDA PHI EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION 2007 Alumni Donations Annual donations to the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation — a 501(c)(3) organization — are crucial to ensuring scholarship and training programs for the personal and educational advancement of our undergraduate brothers. Edgar Sachs is a 1927 graduate of Cornell University (Delta) and a loyal contributor to the Pi Lambda Phi Educational Foundation. Why? According to Mr. Sachs, it’s because his affiliation with Pi Lambda Phi was very important to him. “I have very fond memories of my fraternity days and I made lifelong friends thanks to Pi Lambda Phi,” he says. “I think it’s important to support the Foundation’s good work, which is why I choose to donate regularly.” Temple University (PA Alpha Delta) • Dr. Philip Zeidman — 1949 • Donald Lapidus — 1952 • Dr. Alan Goldfine — 1955 • William L. This tournament honors the memory of Kelly Silverstein, a very active brother who helped found the Canada Kappa Iota (London, Ontario) and Canada Kappa Kappa (Windsor, Ontario) chapters. Kelly passed away in November of 2006 just four days after being diagnosed with leukemia; he was 42 years old. The inaugural Kelly Silverstein Memorial Golf Tournament raised $100,000 for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. This year, tournament organizers are earmarking the proceeds for the newly established “Kelly Silverstein Fellowship” at the Princess Margaret Hospital. The goal is to try to find new and more effective ways to diagnose and treat leukemia for the benefit of patients at Princess Margaret Hospital and around the world by developing the next generation of new treatments and therapies. “Kelly was truly all about giving back to his family, his friends and even to those he barely knew,” says his wife, Jill. “He was involved with so many different charities.” If you are interested in sponsoring this event, purchasing a hole, buying an ad in the golf day memorial book or donating prizes for the silent auction, please contact Stuart Clapham at Sclap63@hotmail.com. Beck, H.B. (1943 VA Omega Alpha), a University of Virginia graduate. A Foundation Trustee, George also served as Executive Secretary, Executive Director and Executive Vice President of the Fraternity. He has generously contributed his time, money and efforts towards helping the Fraternity and Foundation grow and flourish. The George A. Beck, H.B. Outstanding Scholar Award is offered annually to an outstanding Sean Robinson student who ‘08 OH Beta Tau exceeds the Baldwin-Wallace College scholarship’s personal and academic qualifications. This year’s undergraduate recipient is Sean Robinson, a senior majoring in psychology and human resource management at Baldwin-Wallace College. Sean is a resident of Mentor, Ohio. A $2,500 scholarship has been awarded. A spring 2005 initiate, Sean has served his chapter as new member educator and scribe. He has also served on the fundraising and alumni relations committees and as brotherhood committee leader. He is active in the psychology club, Society for Human Resource Management and in Certified Peer Educators. As a member of the newsletter committee, he is also responsible for planning speakers. Sean earned the prestigious Pitcher Award in Psychology and the Cleveland Society for Human Resource Management Award. While maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.88, Sean manages to find time to serve as a lip sync and Greek Sing participant and has also volunteered for Greek Service Day and as a March of Dimes walk team member. He hopes to obtain Master’s and Doctorate degrees in industrial-organizational psychology and ultimately work as a consultant in a large firm. The Frater | Spring 2008 He also hopes to teach applied psychology at the undergraduate university level. Sean is honored to have earned this prestigious scholarship. “The standards of Pi Lambda Phi have held me accountable to maintain superior grades while taking on responsibility with the fraternity, extracurricular activities and the social aspects of being a college student,” he explains. “My undergraduate experience with Pi Lambda Phi has encouraged me to become the man I am today: a confident leader, a dedicated student and a committed brother.” The Dorothy Brian Sullivan Beck VA Omega ‘09 VA Omega Alpha Alpha Scholarship University of Virginia is also awarded annually. Its recipient must attend the University of Virginia and be a member of the VA Omega Alpha chapter. Brian Sullivan is the 2008 undergraduate recipient of this $2,500 scholarship. Brian is a junior majoring in biology with a minor in bio-ethics. He hails from Little Rock, Arkansas. Initiated in the spring of 2006, Brian has served as Archon twice, social chair, assistant social chair and, most recently, as New Member Educator for the fall 2008 rush. He has also served on the Standards Board and as a Greek Week fraternity representative. He’s an active member of the University Democrats and University Ballroom Club and served on the InterFraternity Council Judiciary Committee as a judge. A National Merit finalist, Brian plans on attending medical school and becoming a cardiologist and health science research investigator. “I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the support, encouragement and optimism that Pi Lambda Phi has instilled upon me,” says Brian. “If I grow up to be even a half-decent man, I have my brothers and the alumni who paved the way for my initiation to thank. I’m so honored to win this prestigious and meaningful award.” Chapter News Shippensburg University — PA Sigma Upsilon Chapter Our chapter is celebrating its 25th anniversary on April 26, 2008.
