Today she’s over 12 years sober, the author of four books (two novels, one anthology, and one memoir, all published by HarperCollins) and numerous articles (for The New York Times, The LA Times, Playboy, People, Vanity Fair, Cosmo, and Details, among many others) and the Executive Editor of the popular addiction and recovery site, TheFix.com. She’s also a regular on CBS, Fox News, CNN and was the sex, dating and relationship expert on G4’s Attack of the Show for four years. Her message — about recovering from addiction and maintaining healthy relationships through honest self-assessment and letting go of control — is delivered with both humor and insight, and her strength has helped thousands across the globe. PAST NACA SHOWCASING ACT Students will take away: • Specific information about early signs of alcoholism • A full explanation of alcoholism as a disease and not just the result of circumstances • A personal story that includes every painful detail and the bottoming out it took for recovery to be possible • Warnings about the degree of binge drinking — and the repercussions of it — that’s increasingly prevalent on college campuses today • All delivered in “such a funny, honest, caustic and no-holdsbarred way, you’ll feel like you’ve lived and survived it” (says Sex and the City head writer, Cindy Chupack) Pricing Starts at $2500 Average Program is 45 – 60 minutes + Q&A 2 Barry Scott is recognized as one of the most versatile practitioners of his art. The founder of the American Negro Playwright Theatre at Tennessee State University, where his parents and grandparents graduated, Scott also has acting credits on television’s I’ll Fly Away and In the Heat of the Night. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Actor’s Equity Association, American Film Radio & Television Association and serves on the board of the Tennessee Arts Commission. All programs are followed by Q&A. TEN-TIME NACA SHOWCASING ACT “Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” – An authority on the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Barry Scott created his tribute to Dr. King to teach a generation of students about one of America’s most violent and inspiring times and the man who mobilized a generation of people and changed the world. In this hour long program, Mr. Scott discusses Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in his lecture and actually becomes Dr. King recreating some of his most inspiring speeches. “From I Have a Dream To Yes We Can” – While bigotry and ignorance may still exist, America has now, more than ever before, perhaps faster than anyone thought, fulfilled its promise as the land of opportunity — she shines as a beacon of limitless potential for all her citizens and sends a powerful message to the rest of the world. This program chronicles America’s struggle for equality through the words of Dr. King and Barack Obama as interpreted by Barry Scott. Other offerings include: • “Different Doesn’t Mean Wrong: Learning About Diversity” • “The Courage to Lead” • “Ain’t Got Long to Stay Here” (a full length play) Pricing Starts at $2500 for engagements in March – December $2900 for engagements in February $3600 for engagements in January Average Program is 60 minutes + Q&A Workshops can be 1 hour – full day Pricing listed is based on a single performance for an isolated date. Barry Smith Character Development/Motivation / Personal Growth Employing an unusual mix of comedy, monologue, and multimedia, as well as a lifetime of bizarre experiences, Barry Smith presents insightful, entertaining adventures of his own self discovery. Smith’s “modern monologues” employ an audio-visual element with a 21st century appeal that quickly grabs hold of students’ interest. “Think David Sedaris and Spalding Gray with a whole lot of audio and visual aids,” says The Aspen Times. In Every Job I’ve Ever Had Smith uses his multimedia savvy to recount the childish fantasies of possibility and fear when presented with the most dreaded concept of our generation: the workplace. Presenting an endearing message, “Follow your bliss,” this show offers proof that we can find the life we want for ourselves, not just the life that we are dutifully goaded into. Students will leave this show inspired, enlivened, and sore from laughter. A perfect addition to your lecture series, job fair event, or career day. “Barry’s show was a refreshing guide to career exploration and served as a wonderful reminder that we can find happiness by following our passions, even if they are slightly off the beaten track.” – Bryn Kass, Senior Class Council President, Tufts University SHOWCASING NACA SOUTH, MID-ATLANTIC & NORTHEAST 2012 & PAST NACA SHOWCASING ACT Rebellion for Dummies plays to more than just the young would-be rebels without a cause, engaging with a heartfelt and amusing message on how we can “find ourselves” in all sorts of strange places — and that in the end rebellion may not always be what we think it is. “A scintillating sense of humor, a magnificent turn of phrase and a way with a punchline that is jaw-dropping.” – Montreal Gazette Me, My Stuff and I is a funny and affecting multimedia comedy about our relationship with “stuff.” The show examines how we attempt to hold on to our memories as a way of defining ourselves. “Both hilarious and poignant,” says The Vancouver Province, “this show will make you think about your own life in entirely new ways.” All Roads Lead To Your Own Path: Adventures in a Doomsday Cult (alternate title, Jesus in Montana: Adventures in a Doomsday Cult) has received accolades from The New York Times as well as numerous awards. It is a timely tale of one man’s search for truth, revealing how even the most misguided quest, if undertaken with passion, can be a worthwhile journey. Barry Smith also teaches workshops that enhance the student experience: Write Now! is a snappy and fun alternative to the traditional “Writer’s Group.” A highly popular workshop, Write Now! actually gets participants writing! Expect to blast through deadline anxiety and writer’s block during this 2 1/2 - 3 hour non-critiqued workshop. The Ongoing Story of Your Life: A “Time Capsule” Approach to Journaling is a hands-on workshop that explores the concept of daily creativity by using personal works of art and the stuff you might normally throw away. A perfect companion to “Me, My Stuff and I.” Pricing Starts at $2500 Average Program is 60 minutes + Q&A Pricing listed is based on a single performance for an isolated date. Today, Tweets and Facebook status updates can foment political change in authoritarian countries, but when tasked with explaining complex issues and legislation here in America, they fall tragically short. Chase Whiteside, documentary filmmaker and citizen journalist, has been in the trenches of our fevered political debate, urging the sign-carriers on both the Right and the Left to abandon their talking points for a real conversation about the concerns we face today. How can we be informed participants in a democracy without quality information and knowledge about our government? How will we progress if we can’t even agree on the facts from which to premise public debate? With skepticism and wit, Whiteside performs an urgent intervention on behalf of the Facebook-YouTube generation, equipping them with the ability to distinguish journalism from ‘newstainment’ and useful information from junk as they navigate an information age in which news updates are as likely to come from a friend’s Twitter feed as the New York Times. Utilizing news clips alongside footage from his own documentary work, Whiteside offers a vision for a renewed press and a more informed, better functioning democracy. Chase Whiteside is the founder of New Left Media, a documentary web series that has been seen more than 6 million times online and featured in whole or in part by PBS, BBC, ABC, Fox News, Current TV, Washington Post, The Advocate, The Nation, and Vanity Fair, among others. Whiteside blogs for the Huffington Post, formerly for MTV’s 365Gay.com, and is currently writing a book about the poor quality of online news to be published by Picador in 2013. Additional Program Offerings Include: • Echo Chambers: How Media Choice Hardens Partisan Divisions • Modern LGBT Representation in Media Respect This: Safer Saner Sex in College In this hilarious program, Cindy uses anecdotes and her social research to demystify sex, relationships, and the drunken hook-up culture. With unfiltered honesty, she addresses how media and internet porn skew sexual expectations for men and women, particularly around female pleasure. Cindy’s stories encourage students to look more closely at the role of alcohol in decision-making and how excessive consumption actually undermines social and sexual comfort. Cindy will help students put sex in a healthy context for those who want to make it a safe priority without letting it sabotage their emotional well being. Students will walk away with safer and more realistic expectations about sex. Cindy’s programs can be customized for all-male, all-female, or mixed-gender groups and can include customization on the following topics: • • • • • • The unspoken and unfulfilled promises of masculinity training in our culture How media, internet, and culture are winning the battle to convince women they are not enough Tuning into your Inner Compass by self-regulating and becoming aware of overwhelming choices in your lives and the consuming aspects of technology dependence Enlisting and maintaining a Healthy Crew of friends and role models to help navigate early adulthood The impact of porn and gaming on the sexual expectations of men and women The contributing factors that keep the drunken hook-up culture alive The language in this keynote (or workshop) is frank and unfiltered. Although we wish everyone would listen to Cindy and take her lessons to heart, we don’t recommend this program for mandatory events or for audiences where people under 17 are present. Deanna Latson Nutrition/ Wellness/ Athlete Training Deanna Latson has been involved full time in the field of health and wellness since 1999 and has served as a consultant, spokesperson, writer and guest lecturer for some of the largest colleges, universities and corporations in the world. Her clients include over 400 college and universities, corporations such as Smart Water, Pepsi Co. International, the American Heart Association and AT&T. She is also a regular guest expert on Fox, NBC, and San Diego Living TV. Deanna has been an NCAA grant-approved speaker for over 7 years, speaking to college sports teams about their health and well being. She also has been a sought-after motivational speaker in the field of health and wellness for over a decade. Deanna is living proof that it is possible to completely transform one’s own life through proper education and nutrition. During college, both Deanna’s parents became ill with lifethreatening diseases, a situation that spurred Deanna’s own impetus to change her focus towards nutrition, especially because she had battled with an eating disorder for 11 years as well as numerous other health problems that had plagued her throughout her life. It was after her parents had an amazing transformation in their health, and after Deanna herself healed her own body, that she decided to combine her two passions and apply her speaking talents to the topic of health and wellness. She holds a Bachelors degree in Communication Studies with a special emphasis on organizational communication and a Master’s degree in Communication Studies with a special emphasis on health communications. Deanna also received her Clinical Nutritionist degree from the Natural Healing Institute. Over the past 16 years, Deanna has been dedicated to her own research and development in the field of natural health and well being. SHOWCASING NACA CENTRAL 2012 & EIGHTEEN-TIME NACA SHOWCASING ACT Pricing Starts at $4200 Average Program is 90 minutes + Q&A Dr. John Corvino LGBT Issues / Diversity Is it possible to have a productive conversation about LGBT issues? One side labels the other sinners or deviants and dismisses them as beyond redemption. The other side labels the first as haters or bigots and — in much the same way — treats them as lost causes. There’s a lot of name-calling, but very little effort at understanding. That’s where Dr. John Corvino comes in. Using his trademark combination of logical precision, sensitivity, and humor, he challenges people from all sides to rethink easy assumptions. His new program, “Haters, Sinners, and the Rest of Us: The Gay Debate Today,” draws on his two decades of speaking experience to bring fresh insight into the culture wars. Corvino recently published a book with Maggie Gallagher, Debating Same-Sex Marriage (Oxford University Press, 2012) and he is available for debates with Gallagher and others on marriage, religion, and other hot topics. His other popular programs include “What’s Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?”, “The Meaning of (Gay) Marriage”, and “Coming Out Skeptical” (on analogies between coming out as a gay man and coming out as an atheist). Custom programs are available. As “The Gay Moralist,” Corvino was a regular columnist for LOGO’s 365gay.com, and he has contributed to the LA Times, The Advocate, The New York Times online and The New Republic online, among other venues. He has received numerous teaching awards, and his academic credentials — he’s chair of the Wayne State University Philosophy Department — make him a good choice for campuses that appreciate faculty support for their programming. Bottom line: he’s funny and he makes you think. Audiences act as jury to decide a sentence of life or death for the inmates challenging us to question our own sense of social justice, political involvement, and participation in a non-violent world. Amnesty International spokesperson, Kristin Houlé, says, “Kenny Carnes humanizes us where we do not expect to find our humanity.” PAST NACA SHOWCASING ACT Post Show Discussion: Kenny Carnes’ interactive post-show Q&A with audiences deepens our understanding generated by his arts-based dialogues. This Kenny Carnes original performance examines violence, social justice, peace, patriotism, and civic duty by poetically rewritten narratives of American soldiers from WWII, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Based on interviews, observations, and Kenny Carnes’ personal experiences as an army officer, “Pieces of War” provides resolution of personal and political conflict, understanding through awareness and tolerance, and unites audiences in a common dialogue surrounding the universal journey of the hero in us all. March beside an “army of one” in this multi-character, one-man show. Honor the fallen. Heal the wounded. Gain some peace. That man was her father. The governor granted her clemency in 2009, and within 6 days, she walked out of the prison gates. Through the power of love and forgiveness, she created a meaningful life for herself from behind bars, helping troubled teens find strength to tell their stories of abuse through a program called Outreach. She even helped two of them prosecute their abusers. Her topics of discussion include: How to spot sexual and emotional abuse and what to do about it; The importance of speaking up, telling the truth and never being ashamed of who you are; The power of hope, forgiveness and helping others; And the legal system that can still be antiquated in how it deals with sexual abuse and women. Developing variations in patterns is a creative and inspiring challenge. Zen Garden A All packages include shipping and handling and require a minimum order of 50.
