Just a quick note to start the New Year and by the look of it this should be a busy one. Shirley and I are
off to Hawaii to find some warmer weather and will not be at the monthly meeting, but you will be in
Frank’s good hands.
The first Brunch of the year was well attended with several new members present. This bodes well for
the club for other events as new people bring new ideas. I believe Frank is still open to ideas for a different program for Spring Fling, so please contact him.
On another topic, not car related, as some of you know I spend a lot of time volunteering, whether for the
Calgary Stampede, 55 Plus (where I play Hockey), the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL and as your President, I do all these things because I enjoy them and the people within these associations. This brings me
to my point, while a lot of Calgarian’s assumed during the recent N.H.L. strike there was no hockey worth
watching and the Media is mostly to blame for this, I had no problem filling the void. The best hockey in
town is the University Level (even when the Flames are playing), then the Hitmen, the Alberta Junior
Hockey League and we are also blessed with the best Midget Hockey Tournament, the “Macs” (I also
volunteered for them).
I believe what I am trying to say; besides the poor Media coverage in this town (unless of course you are
an NHL Millionaire) volunteering can be very rewarding and your Mustang Club will welcome you with
open arms.

A PONY IN BUDAPEST!

In the spring of 2012 Bruce and I had the pleasure of accompanying his 84 year old father and two sisters on a
family trip to Budapest, Hungary. Budapest is truly a breathtaking city, filled with historic buildings, delicious
Hungarian cuisine and plenty of old world charm.
While in Hungary, I thought that there was a chance that we might get lucky enough to see a real Lipizzaner
stallion, but the last thing that I expected to see was a different kind of pony – a pony of the Mustang variety! On
one of our daily walking excursions we happened to stroll past a local Hungarian restaurant, and parked outside
on the curb was a shiny silver Mustang – a muscle car right in the heart of Budapest!
The car just happened to be parked in the direct
line of vision to Budapest’s beautiful parliament
building, and what a terrific photo it would make
with the Mustang in the foreground – or so we
thought! The only problem was that there was a
tram parked right in front of the view – completely blocking the shot! We decided to wait until the
tram moved in order to get the best
photograph……..we waited.....and waited……
until we finally realized that the tram was not
going anywhere that evening!
We vowed to return to the restaurant, hoping to
see the Mustang once again. As it turned out,
the Mustang was parked in the same spot almost every day. Great! Except for the fact that a tram seemed to
always be parked in the same place too! We checked on the car over several days and a tram always seemed to
be blocking the view – RATS!
We
finally just gave up on getting a scenic
shot and decided to settle for just a
photo of the Mustang.
One evening on our way back to our
hotel, we happened to pass by the
Mustang once again, only to discover
that this time the tram was nowhere in
sight!
Finally……..an opportunity to
get a great photo of a genuine Mustang
in Budapest!
Bruce happily posed alongside the
Mustang, and now we have a special
photo – not of a Lipizzaner stallion – but
of another pretty pony – to remind us of
our wonderful trip to Hungary!

Despite a $1.8 million
dollar bid (yes that’s right),
the Green Hornet did not
meet reserve at Barrett
Jackson in Scottsdale.

SHELBY EXP 500
"THE GREEN HORNET"
The legendary Shelby prototype
Green Hornet enjoys the distinct
history of being one of the very few
factory prototypes from that era that
survived the crusher. It represents a
rolling history of what was
happening within Ford and Shelby
American in the heyday of the
American muscle car era. In 1967 the
Ford team was impressed with a
prototype Mustang known as "Li'l
Red" which inspired the "California
Special" also known as the GT/CS.
As a result of this effort, two
prototypes were built. One of those
prototypes was VIN 8F01S104288, a
Lime
Gold,
1968
Mustang
notchback, with a deluxe Ivy Gold
interior, 390 V8 engine and C6
automatic transmission. After completing the show circuit, the decision
was made not to move forward with
the GT/SC program, but instead of
being scrapped, the Lime Gold
notchback was sent to Shelby American to once again become a proto-

type, this time for a different kind of
Mustang...a Shelby. It was going to
be an
experimental Shelby, EXP
500, a prototype that would become
fondly known as "The Green
Hornet." Many modifications were
done, as the Green Hornet became
the platform for innovation in design,
performance and handling, including
an experimental Conelec fuel
injection system, independent rear
suspension and a unique rear disc
brake configuration. The Green
Hornet became the pet-project of
Fred Goodell, Chief Engineer at
Shelby American, and both Fred and
Carroll Shelby himself spent a lot of
time
testing
and
developing
components for this project. The
destiny of most all concepts and
prototypes of the era, especially
when the concept did not make it into
production, was to meet their demise
at the business-end of a crusher. In
the case of the Green Hornet, fate
intervened, and a Ford executive's
fondness for the car, and his ability
to wrangle some paperwork, saved
the Green Hornet from the crusher
and allowed it to slip into the

mainstream where it enjoyed a
somewhat mundane existence for
decades until it was rediscovered and
restored back to its former glory. The
provenance and story of this
incredibly significant piece of Ford,
Shelby, and muscle car history is
widely publicized and documented.
For decades it was thought that the
Green Hornet had been destroyed
like "Li'l Red" and its celebrated
existence had become nothing more
than urban legend. When the Green
Hornet was discovered to be alive
and well and documented by none
other than Fred Goodell himself, it
was nothing short of miraculous. The
Green Hornet's provenance of being
a
double-prototype,
and
an
experimental platform for innovation
and design, puts it into a unique
category and represents the best of
the best at both Ford and Shelby at
the time. Arguably the rarest and
most desirable Shelby Mustang of all
time, with a documented provenance
verifying its authenticity and history,
it is, as Carroll said: "the one and
only Green Hornet."

Emergency Shelter. Fund raising for this wonderful agency will now be a
part of each of our events. This means when you participate in a club
event part of your admission or registration costs will go to the Shelter.

The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence. We also offer support and prevention programs

Some AMAC members recently took
a tour of the car collection of Fred
Phillips,
this
was
the
ULTIMATE
garage tour! Fred has a fun & unique
collection
of
vintage
autos
and
collectibles, and he can tell you story
about every single car! He has some
cars I had never even heard of,
beautiful classics, but the true classic
in Fred’s collection is Fred himself.
He is SO knowledgeable and interesting he kept us all enthralled for about three
hours. A big thanks to Fred for sharing his toys with us, he does this to raise money
for a charity that is dear to his heart.

Cabbage Patch Norm?? Our good friend Norm decided to
be a smart-ass (as usual) in November. When everyone
else was starting their “stashes” for Movember, he made the
announcement that if he could raise $5000 he would shave
his head. Apparently he had the $5000 within an hour! So
even though he looks like a cabbage patch doll, he did raise
a large amount money for Prostate cancer. Way to go!

The sister to our 2006 Shelby GTH

Since Susan & I bought our 2006 Shelby GTH we have always thought it would be nice to have the older sister to
go with it. We have had discussions around the dinner table with a few glasses of wine over the last 5 years on
how we would be able to afford the other sibling since an original would be in the six figures. In the end we decided to purchase an un restored 65 or 66 fastback and do the restoration ourselves, at least we would know exactly
what we would have in the end and we wouldn’t be afraid to drive it.
On July 22, 2011 we made our decision to travel up to Edmonton and make an offer on fairly decent 1965 fastback that would make a great donor car for our 1966 GT 350 H Clone. We made a budget for the restoration work
that was ahead of us .This included Mechanical work, body work, paint, final finishes and interior work. The budget was aggressive, and as we started talking to other people who have done restorations, they mentioned we
would probably have an overrun of about $20k. In the end, with some sweat equity we had an over run of $12K
with, so we were pretty happy.

Mechanical work started in September 2011 and was completed by the first part of November 2011. Fred Crane
of Lakeview Auto did the work which included a rebuilt 289 HIPO engine c/w roller rockers, mild cam, flat top pistons, rebuilt 8” Auburn limited slip differential with a 3:50 gear ratio, rebuilt transmission with a shift kit, headers
and flow master mufflers, all new brake system and power brake booster assembly, new control arms, idler arm,
tie rod ends, leave and coil springs, anti-sway bar.
After the mechanical work, the
car was taken to Wally over at
the White Knight Auto Body
shop in early November 2011.
Work included stripping three
layers of paint off the body,
taking all the parts off the body
and prepping them for paint.
All the chrome was taken off and re -chromed or replaced. All the glass was replaced except the two vent
windows. Once the body and body parts were primed, they hit the paint booth in April 2012 and got a couple
coats of raven black. The gold lemans strip was painted on as per the Shelby spec. Once the paint was done, it
was clear coated three times. The re-assembly took place after the painting and took roughly two months to put
her back together. She was picked up in the middle of June and sent over to Kings Glass to have the back
glass and windshield installed.

Once that was completed it was time to drive her home and start on the interior work and finish off the exterior trim. The interior work and minor exterior finishing took until late early September to complete which included new carpet, dash pad, door panels, re-upholstered seats, new interior trim, electronic stereo, new chrome,
GT 350 Hertz badging and new interior paint. Since then it has been on the road we have put on 480 miles,
and she has been to 6 show and shines (so far).
