Joe Wright, UK/France, 2012, 130 mins Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Kelly MacDonald, Olivia Williams The third collaboration of Keira (Knightley) with acclaimed director Joe Wright, following the awardwinning box office successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, is a bold, theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, adapted from Tolstoy’s timeless novel by Tom Stoppard. Set in late-19th-century Russia highsociety, the aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the affluent Count Vronsky (Johnson). The story powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart. Dir. Dalrymple’s ‘manual massage’ cure is shockingly effective, and the handsome Granville soon has female patients queuing out the door. After he starts to develop repetitive strain injury, his friend Edmund St. John-Smythe (Everett), invents a mechanical vibrating device that provides relief for both Granville and millions of women worldwide. Mon 1st, Tues 2nd & Thurs 4th October TABU (15) Weds 3rd & Thurs 4th October Dir. Miguel Gomes, Portugal/ Germany/Brazil/France, 2012, 118 mins, subtitles Teresa Madruga, Laura Soveral, Anna Moreira, Carlotto Cotta When Aurora is hospitalised, she sends her neighbour, Pilar, to pass word of her grave condition to Gian Luca, a man of which no one has ever heard her speak. Pilar’s quest to fulfil her friend’s wish transports us to Africa fifty years earlier, where Aurora is involved in a forbidden love affair with Gian Luca, her husband’s best friend. Their moving, poetic tale is conveyed through the older Gian Luca’s suave voiceover, combined with the lush, melodious sounds of its heady, tropical setting, peppered with a soundtrack of Phil Spector songs. ‘A film that knows cinema inside out, and uses it to work pure magic... If it isn’t the year’s best, I can’t wait to see what that might be.’ Tim Robey, The Telegraph ***** LAWLESS (18) Fri 5th – Sun 7th October Dir.
