NEW HAMPSHIRE COUNTIES
HISTORY OF COUNTY GOVERNMENT
Counties trace their roots to the English shire of a thousand
years ago. Serving a dual function, the shire acted as the
administrative arm of the national government as well as the
citizens’ local government. New Hampshire counties were
first created by the Provincial Act of 1769. The act divided
the Province into five counties which later increased to the
ten counties existing today.
New Hampshire counties continue to serve, to protect,
and to seek justice for all citizens of the state, especially
the most vulnerable residents: youth, the elderly, and the
disabled.
