KENYA @50
STRAPPING AS AN EFFECTIVE AND
AFFORDABLE PACKING SOLUTION
The year 2013 was a momentous year
for Kenyans as we are celebrated 50
years of independence. As a country
we have largely enjoyed peace and
tranquility and made great strides
economically, socially and politically.
Strapping is a packaging technique that
uses Polypropylene (PP) and Polyester
(PET) strapping rolls to fasten goods
together. Strapping can be used in
many applications ranging from high
end production lines to packaging of
goods, books, magazines, cardboard
boxes, postal parcels and other bundled
packages.
THE YEARS AHEAD
Unfortunately some incidents marred
the otherwise good year including
numerous road accidents, the shocking
attack at the Westgate and the death of
one of Africa’s and the world’s greatest
leaders Nelson Mandela. Our sincere
condolences go out to every person
who had misfortune befall them in
the year 2013 and pray for good times
going into the New Year.
2013 was also a good year for Statpack.
We had the chance to introduce new
product lines, extend our footprint
within the region as well as participate
in numerous fairs and exhibitions.
What do we have planned for 2014?
Well, our pledge to you our customer
remains. You will continue to remain
our focus and we will not spare any
expense in bringing to you the best
products and services. We have new
products lined up to be launched and
our promise to you is that they will be
the most technologically advanced
models available, which will greately
enhance your production efficiency.
We are also looking at expanding our
presence within the continent and
will in due course share with you our
exciting plans.
POLYPROPYLENE (PP) STRAPPING
This is a strapping method that uses
polypropylene (PP) rolls which are
versatile, light, flexible and offer an
economical way of fastening materials.
Available in a wide variety of sizes and
gauges, PP strapping offers the greatest
elongation of any strapping type as it
moulds onto contours of odd-shaped
or irregular shaped packages due to its
flexibility.
For high production lines and easy
application, we have heavy duty semiautomatic strapping machines which
are user friendly and easy to maintain.
They offer fast, stable heating and secure
joining result.
POLYESTER (PET) STRAPPING
Like the polypropylene strapping,
Polytester (PET) strapping is an equally
economical strapping method although
PET strapping rolls are made of stronger
and thicker material.
PET strapping is applied using a lithium
battery operated strapping tool with
adjustable functioning mode according
to operation: automatic, semi automatic,
manual and “soft”. It can perform both
vertical and horizontal strapping.
Battery Operated

STRAPPING ROLLS
Strapping rolls are made in various
thicknesses and colours of superior
quality material using the latest
technology and industry standards. The
strapping rolls can also be customized
using flexo printing.
From us at Statpack we wish you a
Happy Jubilee and prosperous 2014.

STAFF TRAINING
TECHNICAL TRAINING IN UK
As part of our growth objective and
investment in training, we selected
two deserving individuals from the
technical division to go for training
abroad. The youthful charismatic John
Ngugi and the experienced Joseph
Gitonga went to the UK for further
training on the latest developments on
Linx laser machines.
The training was held in Linx UK
Cambridgeshire from 9th to 12th July
2013. It covered the complete Laser
machine technical training as well as
Codeology printers in Salisbury.

HR TRAINING
Front-line managers have a large
impact on the staffs reporting to
them in any organization, they affect
employees’ performance satisfaction,
productivity, efficiency and turn-over.
The reason managers and supervisors
play such a crucial role in the wellbeing of an organization is that they
are the ones who interact on a daily
basis with the production people.
Statpack recognizes that good
management doesn’t just happen.
Not all managers know how to deal
with delicate Human Resource issues
or even how to effectively motivate
their employees. We understand that
capable and effective managers have
to be trained to stay current on the
latest updates in employment laws
and other trends.
Two Statpack Team Leaders Adarsh
Shah and Violet Kanyua joined others
at Hilton to attend a seminar on HR for
Non HR Managers in June 2013.

Over the years, our pledge to provide our
customers with affordable and innovative
packaging solutions remains at the very
core of our business plan. We believe
that we can perfect this by interacting
with other players from every part of the
world. This formed our thinking when we
attended the K-Fair, a plastics and rubber
fair that was held in Dusseldorf, Germany
from 16th to 23rd October 2013.
The K-Fair was an eye opener as there
were different packaging materials
and methods displayed from all over
the world, the emphasis on green
technology was of special interest
because as a company we are moving
toward embracing a green approach to
business. With a market that continues to
become more competitive and saturated,
attending the fair gave us invaluable tips
on how best to provide our customers
with cost effective, good quality and
attractive packaging solutions.
Overall the trip went well as we
networked with existing customers and
suppliers.
NEW PRODUCTS
We have introduced some new
products into our stable and will
be introducing more in 2014 as
we work towards bringing you
the latest most technologically
advanced products especially
within the coding line product
line.
DEPARTMENTAL FOCUS
PLASTIC – THE CATCH 22 SITUATION
The arguments for and against plastic
are as many and as varied as the
scientists researching the topic.
Proponents
argue
that
when
packaging questions are tough, plastic
is the answer as it performs tasks no
other material can perform. Different
plastics offer different qualities, thus
varied applications. Plastic can be rigid
when protection is needed, flexible for
convenience’s sake, clear or opaque
and can be moulded into a variety of
shapes and sizes.
Yet, on the other side of the coin, there
is a movement against plastic that
seems to be winning if the ban on
plastic is any indication of the strength
of their arguments. The “negative”
effects of plastic on health and the
environment have formed the basis of
many academic and scientific papers
and cannot be dismissed. These
included soil degradation through
burning of wastes, harmful emissions
of toxics, and the endangering of
human and animal lives.
The East African Community has also
lent a voice to the fray by passing
EAC Polythene Materials Control
Bill 2011 now renamed The East
African Community Plastic Control
Bill prohibiting the manufacture, sale,
importation and use of polythene in
the region. The Bill will become an Act
once the East African Heads of the five
partner states of Tanzania, Uganda,
Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya sign it
into law. But, some countries including
Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Zanzibar,
Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Africa, Mali,
Mauritania, and Kenya have already
started the process of banning the use
of plastic.
As a company we cannot ignore the
contribution of the plastic industry
to the economy. Millions of Kenyans
depend on it whether directly or
indirectly and a total ban would
have a devastating effect on many
livelihoods. We would however call
for stringent measures on use and
disposal of plastics so as to negate
on the negative impacts on health
or environment. We would also call
on consumers to self-educate and
practice self regulation to reduce the
negative environmental impacts of
carelessly disposed plastics.
Statpack has the Statwrap range of
products consisting of aluminium
foils and aluminium containers that
can substitute plastic use especially
for domestic use. Aluminium foil
containers can be used for storing and
transporting food.

PARTICIPATION IN EXHIBITIONS
NAIVASHA EXPO 2013
As the country’s horticultural hub, Naivasha hosted the Horticultural Expo 2013 on
the 20th and 21st September 2013. The event officiated by the Governor Nakuru
County; His Excellency Kinuthia Mbugua saw a good turnout from many local
dignitaries, business people and flower farmers from all over the country.
Due to the need for hygienic packaging required by this particular sector, our
team had an opportunity to display and demonstrate our sector specific products
including the strapping machines, paper cores, paper tubes as well as the
aluminium foils and containers.
The Expo provided a forum to demonstrate how Statpack has become a vital
player in matters relating to packaging solutions in Eastern and Central Region.
We thank everyone who participated in making the day a success.
UGANDA
INTERNATIONAL
TRADE FAIR 2013
Statpack had an opportunity
to participate in Uganda’s 21st
International Trade Fair which took
place from 2nd to 10th October, 2013 at
Lugogo Exhibition Grounds in Kampala.
The Trade fair is a multi-sectoral event
that provides a unique platform for
marketing products and services. The
Fair drew in participants from within the
East and Central African region.
The Trade Fair gave us a wonderful
opportunity to showcase some of our
newly launched products including
Shrink Sleeve Labels, Strapping rolls and
Aluminium foil containers.
Despite the low turnout compared
to previous years which we believe
could be attributed to security threats
occasioned by the unfortunate incident
at the Westgate, as well as a tough
economic year, we managed to achieve
our objectives.
Once again on behalf of Statpack,
we would like to sincerely thank our
customers for the continued support we
have received.
We wish you well and look forward to
strengthening our relationship for the
year 2014.

STAK CONGRESS AND EXPO
Agriculture is the backbone of the Kenyan economy and
as a company we are exploring avenues of responding
to the packaging requirements of this vibrant sector. It
is with this in mind that we participated in an exhibition
organized by STAK (Seed Trade Association of Kenya)
at Safari Park Hotel between the 6th to 8th November.
Major local and international players consisting of
upcoming and established players visited the exhibition
and had an opportunity to interact with our product
range.
In understanding our customers, we are able to tailormake products that respond to their identified needs
thus our continued participation in such exhibitions.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Statpack has been a distributor of Linx printing machines for the past 17 years and
is a pioneer in satisfying customer requirements with respect to online printing
of variable data on products. To ensure that we are up to date with the latest
developments, Linx UK has on an annual basis been sending representatives to
Statpack to train our technicians.
Our business model has seen us take the number one distributor position within
the region as evidenced by our upward growth trajectory and the fact that we have
successfully increased our client base despite the tough economic environment
we are operating in.
To celebrate this, we had the pleasure of hosting the new Managing Director of
Linx Printing Technologies Mr. Nigel Hood and Mr. Nitin Mistry, the Middle East
Africa and India Sales Head.
Mr Ashwin Shah, Chairman Statpack
EDUCATIONAL
SCHOLARSHIPS
An education is a cherished
commodity. Mr. Ashwin Shah,
Statpack Industries Chairman
recognizes that without an
educated nation, the future of our
country as a whole is at stake.
With this in mind he started a
foundation which pays school fees
for staff members whose children
have shown academic excellence.
From left, Mr. Nitin Mistry, Sales Head, Linx Middle East Africa and India, Mr. Mayur Shah,
C.E.O. Statpack and Mr. Nigel Hood, Managing Director, Linx Technologies.
Mr. Nigel was full of praise for our customer focused business model and promised
further support to ensure our customers have the best available technology for
maximum ease of operations.
The continued awareness by consumers for proper product information, which
is also a requirement by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) for purposes of
traceability, has seen a demand for coding solutions. Recent introduction of more
affordable Linx coding machines like the CJ400 and the TJ750 models targeting
smaller enterprises offer answers on cost effective, efficient and reliable ways
through value to customers.
We whole heartedly thank Mr. Nigel Hood and Mr. Nitin Mistry for visiting us and
boosting our team morale.

These scholarships have allowed
Statpack employees who require
help with their children’s school
fees to exploit full educational
potential.
Mr. Ashwin urges excellence as
exhibited by these young minds
by providing encouragement and
recognition for such educational
attainment.
The foundation so far has ten
students from primary through to
tertiary level.
We thank Mr. Ashwin Shah for his
commitment and support.
PRODUCTS
NARROSTRAPPING
Narrostrap is made of woven polyester strapping and is the
most versatile and flexible of all non-metallic strapping. It
is made from high quality polyester yarn and is the superior
alternative to other types of strapping including steel,
composite and extruded.
Narrostrap has many advantages including being easy and
safe to use as there is no sharp edges thus no protective
clothing required. Being weather resistant and waterproof
it will not rust, is lightweight and easily disposable.
Aesthetically, it can be pigmented or woven in a selection of
colours and company or brand names can be printed in an
assortment of colours.
Due to its high tenacity, Narrostrap can be used for many
different applications and greatly reduces and even
eliminates the need for wood blocking and bracing. Some
of its uses include strapping timber products e.g. doors, roof
rafters and pallets, flat glass and windscreens, machinery
and equipment, shipping crates amongst other uses.
At Statpack we are committed to ensuring that each and
every load is correctly secured using the right variety of
Narrostrap and our technically skilled representatives will
gladly provide training and demonstrations if required.
CODEOLOGY THE NEW CARTON CODING PRINTER
Traceability is a key factor in supply chain and logistics.
Government regulations, food and pharmaceutical safety are
some of the key factors driving for better product traceability.
Gone are days when labelling was done with a marker pen and
label, nowadays production lines have embraced technology
for increased efficiency through a reduction in manual labour
thus improved processes and reduction in errors from manual
label application.
the print head cover, one keypad can control print on both
sides of your product. Operation of the keypad is as simple
as texting on a mobile phone. A simple Tick and Cross menu
system enables for easy training and understanding.
Stainless steel casing is used throughout to eliminate corrosion,
maintain electrical and shielding integrity throughout the life
of the machine and to provide a robust shell against the rigors
of daily operation.
We are therefore pleased to add carton coders to our product
range. The i100 large character ink jet printer can be
used for coding time, date, batch, shelf-life and traceability
information on most production lines.
All of our inkjet printers are available with either
environmentally-friendly water based inks for printing on
cardboard or timber, or solvent inks for printing on concrete,
bricks and other non-porous substrates.
Operating stand-alone, the printer can be controlled from a
keypad or remotely from a PC. If used remotely, one keypad
can be shared amongst all of your printers. When built into
Our team is available to provide a demonstration at your

HOW TO DEVELOP MOTIVATION
IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE
Team Leader Accounts, Darshan Thakkar offers some tips
First, let us find out what the importance of motivation
exactly is. Simply put, motivation is that driving force
which allows you to achieve your goals and go after what
you want in life. If you want to change your personality for
the better, get a promotion at work, start a new habit, be
a better person who is part of the community, and become
a better parent for your kid – all of these things would be
easier accomplished if you are properly motivated.
CONSTANTLY WORK AT MOTIVATING YOURSELF
A goal does not do you much good unless you are constantly
thinking about, and working towards it. Write down your goal
and place it somewhere that you will see it at least 1-2 times
a day. If you have a weight loss goal, place your written goal
beside the refrigerator. If your goal is to get physically stronger,
place your written goal near your weight bench so you can see
it when you are working out. This provides the extra motivation
you need for those tough days.
As long as you have a strong personal motivation, you can
achieve almost anything that you want from life. However,
remember not to fall into the trap of looking for short-cuts
to achieve your goals. It’s perfectly fine if you have to take a
long and winding road to achieve your goal. It will be an even
sweeter victory when you finally achieve your goal, knowing
that you have had to go through several hurdles to attain it.
DEVELOPING MOTIVATION IN LIFE
So how can you develop motivation in life? If you wish to
accomplish a goal – be it short-term or long-term in nature –
how can you find it in you to be properly motivated? Here are a
few things that you should keep in mind:
A great way to motivate yourself
with business goals is to put up a
motivational quote beside your
desk. Do Google searches for
motivational quotes, then print
off one and put it inside of a
picture frame. Keep it there and
read it occasionally throughout
the day. Whenever you find
yourself not looking at the
quote anymore, or it no longer
provides the inspiration that it
once did, it’s time to change the
quote. It’s perfectly OK to change
this quote every 1-2 weeks for maximum motivation.
As long as you
have a strong
personal
motivation, you
can achieve
almost anything
that you want
from life.
1. Focus on one goal at a time
This should be partnered with the fact that you should make
sure that your short-term goals all help in achieving your longterm goals. One of the best ways for you to focus on one goal at
a time is to make a diary of your goals – yes, write it down – so
that you will have a visual representation of the things that you
want to achieve rather than letting it all get lost in your head.
2. Get rid of all the distractions which might prevent you from
achieving your goal
Let’s say that you are a writer who wants to finish a book. How
can you type away on your keyboard one chapter after another
if there are many distractions surrounding you like television,
friends chattering away or the lure of aimlessly browsing
through the Internet. In order for you to stay properly motivated,
make sure to steer clear of any distractions.
Some people make a habit of reading their goals either when they
first wake up or right before they go to bed. When you read your
goals upon arising, you may begin to notice that you find yourself
doing more each day to help you reach your goals. Similarly, when
you read your goals right before bed, you may notice that you
wake up with good ideas that you never thought of before.
3. Completely block out any negative influences
Finally, make sure that you are completely blocking out any
negative influences in your life. If you feel that you are being
distracted from your goal by a problem which does not seem
to go away, ask yourself what you can do to eliminate such a
challenge and distraction in your life. Maybe you are being
sidetracked by negative thoughts and feelings because you
have no faith in yourself. Addressing the root of the problem,
completely blocking out any negative distractions and thinking
purely positive thoughts is the best way for you to develop
motivation in your everyday life.
FINAL THOUGHTS
It’s important to have motivation in your life. Motivation is the
fuel that you need to continue striving for your goals. Soak up
motivating things in your life on a daily basis. Read great books
that will inspire you. Read great blogs that are both positive and
informative.
It’s human nature to have days where you aren’t very motivated.
However, if you continue to surround yourself with positive and
motivational things, those days will be few.

LESSON
A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the
manager are walking to lunch when they find
an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie
comes out. The Genie says, “I’ll give each of you
just one wish.”
“Me first! Me first!” says the admin clerk. “I want to be in the
Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.”
Puff! She’s gone.
“Me next! Me next!” says the sales rep. “I want to be in
Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse,
an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.”
Puff! He’s gone.
“Ok, you’re up,” the Genie says to the manager. The manager
says, “I want those two back in the office after lunch.”

LESSON
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing
nothing.. A small rabbit saw the eagle and
asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do
nothing?” The eagle answered: “Sure, why
not.”
A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would
love to be able to get to the top of that tree”
sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the
energy”. “Well, why don’t you nibble on some
of my droppings?’ replied the bull. They’re
packed with nutrients.” The turkey pecked at a
lump of dung, and found it actually gave him
enough strength to reach the lowest branch
of the tree.
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below
the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox
appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the
second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was
proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly
spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.
TO SIT AND DO NOTHING,
YOU MUST BE SITTING VERY HIGH UP.
BULL MIGHT GET YOU TO THE TOP,
BUT IT WON’T KEEP YOU THERE.
QUOTABLE QUOTES
You just never know, who in the crowd, standing
beside you in line or passing you in the street,
might be raised in spirit, or even lifted from
despair, by the kindness in your glance or the
comfort of your smile.
But they may never forget.
