The Madison Jobe Senior Center is a recreation facility for active adults 50 years of age and older. It is operated by
the City of Pasadena Parks and Recreation Department and is located near the intersection of Red Bluff and Thomas,
close to Hwy 225. Whether you are working, semi-retired, or retired, we offer a variety of great leisure, educational
and personal development opportunities for you. Our programs offer activities that encourage and support health,
creativity, and social interaction for active adults.

In the Spotlight “Lou Ann Nolan”
“Tra-la it’s May!” May reminds me of May Day which
was the first day of May when I was growing up. It was
a day we would secretly leave flowers at neighbor’s
houses and never let them know who did it. The rule
around our house was that we could do it as long as we
did not pick flowers from any garden other than our
own. We were allowed to pick wildflowers, of course.
We would happily gather the day lilies, buttercups,
violets, gardenias, and roses from our garden or flowers
from whatever other gardens that we had the owner’s
permission. We giggled and joyfully would leave these
bouquets on the doorsteps with a feeling that we had
spread a little joy to folks. We would tie the bundles
with string, twigs, long grass blades, or the long leaves
from the lilies. Sometimes we would bargain for ribbon
from our grandmother’s collection or rick rack from our
mother’s sewing basket. What joy we had!
May 5th is our Cinco de Mayo dance and will be lots of
fun for all. The staff has worked hard to bring some
delicious food and some fun entertainment.
I want to shout out a special thank you to all those
wonderful folks who helped us make the Ms. Senior
Pasadena pageant a huge success. It would not have
been possible without our generous sponsors, Cigna
HealthSpring, Franks and Sons Jewelry, The Waterford,
Walgreen’s, Parson’s House, Massage Envy and Joe
Sam’s. We also could not have done it without all the
wonderful volunteers, Kirby Cardenas (Parks Director),
Richard Scott (Community Relations Director) and his
staff, Julie Wilson, Michelle Blunt, Jackie Welch,
Wayne Holt, Stanley White, Charlie Genzer, Sylvia
Soliz, Ed Racicot, the Parks and Recreation
Department, Clean Streets Department, Eric Sweet and
Channel 16, Barbara Sitzman, the judges: Judge Les
Rorick, Lynne Summers, Raymond Franks, Lynne
Foley, Myrian Espitia, the escorts for the court, Darrell
Morrison, Asst. Police Chief M.P. Jackson, Asst. Police
Chief Josh Bruegger, Bill Welch, Sy Salazar, Don Early,
Dwight Ottele, Mark Beaver, Mike Kainer, Tim Ryan,
Marc Hopkins, Ernie Alsobrook, and the many other
departments and people who pitched in to help us.
It was a whirlwind time but a very heartfelt thank-you to
all involved in making it a success. It was a beautiful
time shared with the loveliest people. A special thank
you goes out to each of our incredibly talented and
beautiful contestants who made the judges’ job
incredibly difficult in picking a winner (because they all
were winners), and to the former queens who helped
share their experiences and talents to help the
contestants. A special recognition also goes out to the
devotion of the Staff of Madison Jobe for their
perseverance and excellent work under pressure: Sandra
Varela, Eric Muecke, Elisa Roach, Dana Solomon, Julie
Perez, and Barbara Robles. Job well done by all! Our
new queen, Mrs. Betty Smith, is beautiful, talented,
poised, elegant, and will be a wonderful representative
for our City.
Whew! With all that said, May is set to be a whirlwind
of activity. Add to that, (brag, brag) my son is getting
married in May to a wonderful young lady and my
daughter is graduating from Yale. I am blessed beyond
measure as a mother. Speaking of mothers, remember to
take the time to remember your mothers, friends,
daughters, daughters in law and all the moms you know
on Mother’s Day, May 10th.
And in the spirit of May Day, spread joy and smiles
wherever you can! Sometimes it is fun to do it anonymously and without credit. Make someone’s day joyful.
SILVER STAR SENIOR MEETING
Tuesday, May 5th in conjunction with the Cinco De
Mayo Party. Please call to register for the Cinco De
Mayo party! Hope to see you there!
May- Monthly To Do’s:
We will be CLOSED Friday, May 1st for
floor maintenance and Monday, May 25th, in
observance of Memorial Day.
SILVER STAR MEETING – is Tuesday,
May 5th which will be incorporated into our Cinco
De Mayo Party! So come and hear about our
upcoming events and please RSVP for the Cinco De
Mayo party.
BUNCO (Every Monday Except TRIAD
Monday or a holiday) – Mondays from 10 am 2 pm on May 4th and 11th. Please bring your sack
lunch and join in the fun with head hostess, Ruby
Belch. Cost is $3. Prizes will be awarded!
PEN PAL PARTY– Thursday, May 7th, 1:30 to
2:30. All participants in the Pen Pal program are
asked to come meet their pen pal. Games, entertainment and refreshments will be provided.
TUTS – Tuesday, May 12th. We will see the
musical production of “The Music Man.” The bus
will leave at 4:45 pm. We will have dinner at
Cleburne’s Cafeteria and proceed to the theatre.
BINGO - Wednesday, May 13th and 27th, from 1
pm to 3 pm. Each participant will have a two card
limit per game. All donations for prizes are
appreciated. Come join the Fun!
TRIAD – will be Monday, May 18th at 10:30 am.
Featured speaker will be Mr. Andrew Hardwick,
Public Affairs Specialist for Social Security
Administration. Learn how to avoid Identity Theft,
Scams, Fraud, and Elder Abuse. “Knowledge is
Power” and “Investigate before you Invest”.
LUNCH BUNCH – will be Tuesday, May 19th at
10:30 am. We will be heading to Buffalo Grill on
Bissonett.
DAY TRIP - Friday, May 22nd, we will going to
the resale shops in Houston and have lunch at a
nearby restaurant. The bus will leave the center at 9
am. The cost of the trip is $2.
LUNCH AND A MOVIE – will be Friday.
May 29th. We will watch “Gentlemen Prefer
Blondes” One of Marilyn's greatest movies where
you can always find new friends in diamonds.
Lunch is $2 and will be served at 11 am. Please

June- Looking Ahead:

make plans to arrive by 7:30 am. The bus will
return to the center at approximately 7 pm.
TRIAD – will be Monday, June 15th at 10:30 am.
This meeting is a partnership of seniors, law
enforcement and community. “Knowledge is
Power!”
DAY TRIP - Tuesday, June 23nd, we will going
to Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site in
Columbia, Texas and have lunch at a nearby
restaurant. The bus will leave the center at 9 am.
The cost of the trip is $7.
LUNCH AND A MOVIE – will be Friday.
May 26th. We will watch “Mildred Pierce”. Pad
your shoulders and come watch as Joan Crawford
raises one of the most ungrateful, spoiled daughters
in motion history. Lunch is $2 and will be served at
11 am. Please RSVP!
LUNCH BUNCH – will be Tuesday, June 30th at
10:30 am. We will be heading to Katz’s Deli at 616
Wertheimer. Sign up will begin during the Silver
Star Meeting Cinco De Mayo party on Tuesday,
May 5th.
