Editor’s Note
The third issue of LAVA features a mega-coverage on one of the world’s biggest sporting
events – The World Cup 2014, which will take place from 12 June to 13 July. LAVA magazine
takes a fairly in-depth look at a selected number of stadiums in Brazil that will be hosting
World Cup matches, such as the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the Arena Fonte
Nova in Salvador and the Sao Paolo arena. It’s interesting to learn how various innovative
lighting and audio-visual solutions have been incorporated into these venues to provide the
best football viewing experience for the hundreds of thousands of attendees, as well as the
millions of people who will be watching these matches from around the world.
This issue also has features on lighting and audio-visual solutions in other stadiums or sports
venues around Asia, including an interesting case study on a sports complex in Malaysia.
Of course, LAVA Volume 3 also includes various projects outside of the sporting realm,
including several different projection mapping showcases and a series of light art
installations in Singapore.
Lastly, be sure to read about our recent trip to ACME’s factory in Foshan City, China. It’s an
impressive facility that boasts advanced technologies and machinery, and a spiffy showroom
to boot.
Enjoy reading!
Best regards,
Nur Shakylla Nadhra (Editor)

Introducing Blackmagic URSA, the world’s first
user upgradeable 4K digital film camera!
Blackmagic URSA is the world’s first high end digital film camera
designed to revolutionize workflow on set. Built to handle the
ergonomics of large film crews as well as single person use, URSA
has everything built in, including a massive 10 inch fold out on set
monitor, large user upgradeable Super 35 global shutter 4K image
sensor, 12G-SDI and internal dual RAW and ProRes recorders.
Super 35 Size Sensor
URSA is a true professional digital film camera with a
4K sensor, global shutter and an incredible 12 stops
of dynamic range. The wide dynamic range blows
away regular video cameras or even high end broadcast cameras,
so you get dramatically better images that look like true digital film.
The extra large Super 35 size allows for creative shallow depth of field
shooting plus RAW and ProRes means you get incredible quality!
Dual Recorders
Blackmagic URSA features dual recorders so you
never need to stop recording to change media.
That’s critical if you are shooting an historical event,
important interview or where you just cannot stop shooting! Simply
load an empty CFast card into the second recorder and when the
current card is full, the recording will continue onto the second card,
allowing you to change out the full card and keep shooting!

User Upgradeable Sensor
Blackmagic URSA features a modular camera turret that can
be removed by unscrewing 4 simple bolts! The camera turret
includes the sensor, lens mount and lens control connections
and can be upgraded in the future when new types of sensors are developed.
This means your next camera will be a fraction of the cost of buying a whole
new camera! Choose professional PL mount, popular EF mount and more!
Built in On Set Monitoring!
Say goodbye to bulky on set monitors because
you get a massive fold out 10 inch screen built
into Blackmagic URSA, making it the world’s
biggest viewfinder! The screen is super bright and features an ultra
wide viewing angle. URSA also includes two extra 5” touch screens on
both sides of the camera showing settings such as format, frame rate,
shutter angle plus scopes for checking levels, audio and focus!

ADVERTORIAL
Crestron Asia:
A One-Stop Integrated
Solutions Provider
Since its establishment in Hong Kong in 1995,
Crestron Asia has come a long way and is now the
world’s leading manufacturer of advanced control
and automation solutions, integrating all systems
and devices onto a single open platform so they can
communicate and work together seamlessly.
“We want to provide one-stop integrated solutions to
our clients. This is a way to build customer loyalty.
If we can provide them with every solution that they
require, why would they need to look anywhere else?”
said V incent Lum, Business Manager (Singapore) of
Crestron Asia.
LAVA magazine recently visited V incent at the
company’s Singapore office, which serves as a
representative office where employees provide local
support services. “One of the reasons we’ve set up
an office here is that, as the business continues to
grow, we will need support. Selling is one thing, but
after-sales service is another.”
At the same time, the setting up of an office in
Singapore sends a positive message to its local
clients. “We want to show them that we are not a
‘one-off ’ company. We are here to stay.”
Playing to its Strengths
To excel in a challenging industry would mean having
to optimise ones resources, and Crestron Asia is more
than willing to play to its strengths. The company is
placed in an ideal position, as it provides solutions
for both lighting and audio-visual industries – thus
not only serving the vertical but also the horizontal
market segment. V incent explained: “Since we’re not
focused on just one aspect of the market, we do have
an advantage.”
The distinct qualities that V incent describes as
“seamlessness and scalability” also point back to
Crestron Asia’s commitment to establish long-standing
relationships with its clients. “We can custom-make
our products that will meet the client’s needs right
now as well as the future. We think long-term and
wish to cultivate a recurring business.”
Direct penetration is also a key factor, V incent noted.
Crestron Asia makes sure to meet with its potential
clients face-to-face in order to address their needs
and customise its products to cater to them.
Product Development and R&D
In an ongoing effort to build its portfolio, Crestron Asia
is working towards developing its own “gears” (i.e.
the interfaces between lighting and audio systems),
such as transformers and ballasts, to dovetail its goal
Showroom at Crestron Asia’s Singapore office
of providing a complete sweep of integrated solutions
with minimal errors. “If we can build an entire chain
of products in one production line and test it without
depending on third parties, we can become very selfsufficient,” V incent added.
Software-wise, the company is slowly moving into
enterprises – meaning assets-management, such
as integrating one’s television, lights and other
electronics seamlessly. “This means that we will
provide unified solutions wherever you go. From the
moment you press the button of a door to a building
until you exit the back door, it would be entirely from
us.”
Crestron’s big ideas are backed by its solid team of
more than 300 R&D engineers at its US-based lab.
Looking Ahead
As a reputable brand with big dreams and a desire to
compete with only the best in the industry, Crestron
Asia is looking to expand its scope by incorporating
the concept of “building by design”.
“This means providing a full catalogue of solutions
catered to an entire building,” V incent explained.
“This is not just a focus on individual rooms, but
whole enterprises. We are moving very aggressively
in this direction and certainly have the strength, the
products and the people to do so.”

CLAY PAKY ANNOUNCES A PARTNERSHIP WITH
ASIMETRIK IN TURKEY
C
lay Paky has announced a partnership with
ASIMETRIK SES, IŞIK ve GÖRÜNTÜ SİSTEMLERİ
A.Ş (Asimetrik Sound, Light and Display Systems). The
Turkish company, which specialises in the marketing
and installation of technology and systems for show,
corporate and architectural environments, said it
was delighted to forge a partnership that involves
marketing and providing technical assistance for all
Clay Paky products.
Asimetrik is based in Ankara and Istanbul and can
count on a close network of partners throughout
Turkey, with branches in Antalya and Izmir.
This partnership replaces the previous contract
between Clay Paky and Samim Mutluer’s SF Ses ve Işık
Sistemleri A.Ş., considering the existing agreements
between SF and the Harman Group.
Alberico D’Amato, Clay Paky’s Sales Manager, said:
“Asimetrik is a solid and dynamic company with a
strong presence throughout the country, and we are
sure it will be able to promote our products better on a
highly interesting continuously expanding market.
14
Jul-Sep 2014
Clay Paky’s products have always been highly present
in Turkey, thanks to the excellent work carried out with
leading rental companies. It is enough to remember
the 2013 Mediterranean Games, with over 400 Clay
Paky lights, and the Turkvision Song Contest this
year. Clay Paky lights also illuminate some of the most
prestigious clubs in Turkey, such as the Halikar nas in
Bodrum and the Billionaire in Istanbul.
Metim Celikbilek, chairman of the company, and his son,
Gorkem, said: “We are proud to distribute Clay Paky.
We are increasingly aiming at a quality market, and we
have grown in recent years and acquired numerous
projects abroad. Our technicians are all highly qualified
and capable of providing a complete service – from the
design stage to the after-sales service. We take part
in numerous trade shows and inter national workshops
to keep up-to-date on any technological innovations in
our industry, and in tur n, we organise workshops and
demos at our offices, where we present all the brands
we distribute thoroughly.”
The partnership between Clay Paky and Asimetrik
came into effect on 1 June 2014.

RESTRUCTURES
DIRECTORS
ITS
BOARD
OF
Service Engineer, Technical Sales,
and ultimately Sales Director.
Steve’s passion for integrating
video with lighting control has
driven the formation of Avolites
Media Ltd. and the purchase of the
technology within the Ai servers.
The capabilities of these have been
showcased at the London 2012
Olympics, powering the world’s
largest video screen, and again for
the volumetric “LED Forest” at the
recent Sochi W inter Olympics.
A
volites has announced a restructuring of the board of directors, with
Managing Director Richard Salzedo stepping back into the role of
Director, and Steve Warren ascending to the role of Avolites Group MD.
Founder shareholders Steve Warren, Richard Salzedo and Financial
Director Meena Varatharajan purchased Avolites from previous owners
Carlton TV in 1991. Since then Richard has worked for Avolites as Research
Engineer and R&D Director, overseeing hugely successful projects such as
the Sapphire and industry changing Avolites Pearl console before moving
on to become Managing Director. He now hands the reigns of control
to Steve who has started with Avolites in 1984 and in his 30 years with
the company has been employed as Electrical W ireman, Test Engineer,
Steve states: “We at Avolites are in
the privileged and possibly unique
position of producing first-class
lighting and video control products.
The management team would like
to thank Richard for his continued
commitment to Avolites, and will
continue to use the immensely
strong components of T itan lighting

COMMUNITY COMPLETES
TEST FACILITY
NEW
LOUDSPEAKER
by Senior Measurement Technician, Hadi Sumoro, the
new test facility enables loudspeaker measurements
with unprecedented accuracy and precision.
W ith its indoor location, the new facility makes it
possible to control temperature and humidity.
It
eliminates wind problems and minimises interference
from outside noise sources. This allows Community
engineers to accurately measure complex loudspeaker
data and to gather polar data in precise 1-degree
resolution. Measurements are automated with an
ELF robotic rotator system controlled by EASERA™
software.
I
n keeping with its commitment to accurate and
complete loudspeaker technical data, Community
has opened a new, state-of-the-art indoor test facility
at its factory in Chester, Pennsylvania USA. Designed
by Charlie Hughes of Excelsior Audio and operated
The new test facility follows in the footsteps of a long
tradition of loudspeaker measurements at Community.
Community’s first test facility was a 32-foot-high tower
built in 1975 on a southeast Pennsylvania hilltop, which
provided measurements that closely corresponded
to anechoic chamber standards and established
Community as an early leader in providing accurate
loudspeaker specifications. In 1981, Community
built a semi-anechoic room in its factory to manually

collect spherical propagation data of loudspeakers
using T ime Delay Spectrometry (TDS) technology
developed by Richard Heyser and Gerald Stanley.
In 1994, Community built a new outdoor test facility
extending from the third floor of its factory building
in Chester. At 40 feet above the ground and with a
microphone to loudspeaker distance of 39 feet, this
system is still utilised today and uses TDS software to
collect far-field and free-space data and to minimise
outdoor noise and reflections. The outdoor test
system provides the ability to measure low-frequency
loudspeakers in near-free-space conditions.
Regarding the new test facility, Community’s Director of
Technical Services, Dave Howden said: “Community’s
outdoor measurement systems were an important
resource for our TAG (Technical Applications Group)
group as we worked with systems designers and end
users. Now, this new indoor facility provides phase
data and other new information for systems designers
and will help Community’s engineering team design
the next generation of great loudspeakers.”

SOUNDFIRM INSTALLS AUSTRALIA’S FIRST MEYER
SOUND CINEMA SYSTEM FOR DOLBY ATMOS
DUBBING STAGE
S
oundfirm, which has received
more awards than any other
Australian audio post facility, has
selected a Meyer Sound cinema
loudspeaker system for its Dolby
Atmos dubbing stage in its new
Melbourne location. The large
mixing room is the country’s first to
feature an all-Meyer Sound screen
channel and surround loudspeaker
system.
The Meyer Sound system was
selected by owner Roger Savage,
a veteran re-recording mixer whose
film credits include the family classic
“Babe” and the musical “Moulin
Rouge!”
“When we decided to install an

Atmos room, we needed surround loudspeakers capable
of full-range response, and Meyer Sound sounded so
much better than anything else we’d experienced,” said
Savage.
The monitoring system incorporates three Acheron®
80 screen loudspeakers, eight HMS-12 and 29 HMS-10
cinema surround loudspeakers, six X-800C high-power
cinema subwoofers, and two 500-HP subwoofers in the
rear for surround low end.
Chris Goodes, Soundfirm’s Chief Re-recording Mixer,
has mixed a number of projects in the new room. “The
first thing I took to was the top end,” he said. “The
Acherons are so much better than what we’d been
using before. The dialogue clarity is outstanding, and
you can trust what you’re doing with equalisation. You
never have to question whether the speaker is changing
the sound. And you can work for 10 or 12 hours on this
system without fatigue.”
Projects mixed by Goodes since opening include “The
Monkey King,” an Atmos mix for the Chinese market;
“Predestination,” a feature starring Ethan Hawke; “Deep
Sea Challenge,” a James Cameron documentary; and
“Hidden Universe” for IMAX release.
Savage appreciates the streamlined installation of
the 48 V remotely powered surround loudspeakers.
“Installation and setup was much easier than the
conventional approach,” he noted. “You simply run a
single cable with 48 V power and audio for the internally
bi-amplified surrounds. This saves installation costs,
particularly when you’re dealing with an Atmos system.”
The new mixing theatre also includes a Harrison Trion
mixing console with 240 inputs, five Avid Pro Tools
systems, a 10-meter-wide screen, and a Christie 4K
projector with 3D capability.
“The independent mixers who use the room all comment
on how great it sounds,” reported Savage. “The Meyer
Sound monitors have lived up to our high expectations,
and exceeded them—particularly with Atmos.”
Established in 1983, Soundfirm lists sound mixing credits
for such iconic films as “Crocodile Dundee,” “Mad Max
2,” and “Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome.” In addition
to its Melbourne location, Soundfirm also maintains
post-production facilities in Sydney and Beijing.

I
t seems Integrated Systems Europe 2014 has
reached a milestone in its history after attracting
more than 50,000 registered attendees for the
first time, thus cementing its reputation as the
world’s most popular event for professional audiovisual and electronic systems integration.
The final total attendance of 51,003 exceeded the
expectations of the organisers, with a record 952
exhibitors showcasing their latest products and
helping to fuel attendee growth of 15 per cent over
last year’s number of 44,151.
Other key draws to the event were an enlarged
Professional Development programme including
off-floor training sessions hosted by ISE’s co-
owners CEDIA and InfoComm Inter national, with
both associations also contributing seminars to
the event’s new on-floor theatres dedicated to
Residential and Commercial Solutions. Between
them, these sessions attracted over 2,400 people,
with InfoComm experiencing an almost three-fold
increase in its education traffic over 2013 after
offering free session vouchers to every attendee

Amsterdam RAI, The Netherlands
These events attracted a further 1,000 attendees,
with hundreds more also signing up for partner
events during the show, such as the SVGE’s Sport
Facility Integration Summit, digital-signage market
briefings and tours from Invidis Consulting and the
Themed Entertainment Association tour.
Mike Blackman, Managing Director of Integrated
Systems Events, said: “Our big theme this year
was content, and we believe we have delivered on
our promise to enhance our event – and attract
more attendees – by offering a combination of
technical training, market intelligence, real-world
case studies and networking opportunities that is
unmatched by any comparable event in Europe.”
While the show’s attendance continues to rise,
there has been no dilution in the spending power
of ISE’s visitors if the show’s exhibitor rebooking
trend is anything to go by. By the time the event
ended on 6 February, on-site rebooking for ISE
2015 stood at 33,450 net square metres, compared
with the 2014 show’s total net footprint of 36,035.
The rebooking figure is 10 per cent higher than the
equivalent a year ago.
“By all standards of measurement, ISE 2014 was
extraordinarily successful,” said David Labuskes,
CTS, RCDD, Executive Director and CEO of
InfoComm Inter national. “It was a great way to kick
off the industry calendar, and a spectacular way
to begin InfoComm Inter national’s 75th year. What
started out as a small show in Geneva 11 years ago
has blossomed into a truly thriving event. That first
ISE was an important early step in our association’s
jour ney beyond its US borders, but would be largely
unrecognisable to this year’s ISE attendees.”
Wendy Griffiths, Executive Director of CEDIA
Region 1, shared this sentiment. “ISE 2014 was
phenomenal in every respect. This year’s event
demonstrated outstanding inter national growth and
CEDIA benefited hugely from this success. More CI
companies became CEDIA members at the show
than ever before, every CEDIA session in the new
ISE Residential Solutions Theatre was jam-packed
and CEDIA training courses available off the show
floor were also well-attended.”
The next Integrated Systems Europe will take place
at the Amsterdam RAI from 10–12 February 2015.

L
AVA magazine had the opportunity to visit one
of the most significant and hugely popular
tradeshows in the pro audio-visual and
lighting industry, Prolight + Sound Guangzhou. As
one would expect from the exhibition’s sheer size,
the four-day event saw another successful year
with a growth of 23.4 per cent and 24.2 per cent
in exhibitors and visitors respectively compared to
last year.
There was up to 1,138 exhibitors from regions as
far as Europe and South America, and a staggering
60,038 local and inter national visitors. It is also
worth noting that the exhibition space was expanded
to 11 halls from the previous 9, which amounts
to 110,000 square metres, to accommodate the
increasing number of attendees and exhibitors.
The event was well organised, with the sprawling
complex divided according to six sections spread

across 13 halls: Audio Brand Name Hall (reserved
for well-recognised brands in the professional audio
industry), Pro Audio Hall, Pro Lighting Hall, Music
Instrument Hall, Enping Microphone Hall and KTV
Hall. This made it convenient for visitors, especially
first-timers, to manoeuvre their way through the
fair, which stretched up to three floors.
Prolight + Sound Guangzhou also saw an
encouraging rise in the number of inter national
brands participating in this year’s event. Among
the many newcomers to the show was dB
Technologies, a manufacturer of audio products
from Italy. The company’s Inter national Sales
Manager, Mr Gianluca Dalessandro, expressed
positive sentiments with regard to the tradeshow.
“It’s a very good show to be in. This is the first time
we have showed new technologies with our new
distributor. People are positive about our brand.
We have seen customers from China, Asia Pacific,
Prolight + Sound Guangzhou
24th – 27th February 2014
Area A, China Import and Export Fair Complex
Guangzhou, China
Canada and Latin America. The China market is
quite complicated but a brand like ours can have a
very good development here, just like how we are
doing in the rest of the world.”
These inter national brands hailed from 25 countries
and regions and included: ADJ, AKG, Allen &
Heath, audio-technica, Avid, Beyerdynamic, Bose,
D.A.S., Db Technologies, FBT, HARMAN, JBL, JTS,
König & Meyer (K&M), L- Acoustics, LaserWorld,
Martin Audio, Martin Professional, McCauley,
Meyer Sound, NEXO, Philips, Proel, Sennheiser,
SHURE, SOUNDKING, Studiomaster, TASCAM, TC
Electronic, TEAC, TWAUDiO and YAMAHA. The
countries and regions represented were Austria,
Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, the Czech
Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein,
Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia,
Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK and the US.
This increase in participation did not go unnoticed
as exhibitors brought up the fact that the show had
become more inter national since cooperating with
Messe Frankfurt. This provided great incentive for
companies seeking to branch out into untouched
territories. “We have seen more inter national buyers
this time, especially from South America,” said Mr
Xin Liao, a representative of Nightsun Pro Lighting
Equipment. “This is a new market that we intended
to expand our business to and we have engaged in
serious discussions with some of them. I think the
show is a must-attend event for the industry and
certainly we will retur n next year.”
Similarly, a well-recognised industry event
Prolight + Sound Guangzhou also provided
effective platform for brands to reach out to
Chinese pro audio and lighting market, which
seen exceptional growth over recent years.

the

This prospect was what motivated Mr Andrew
Kong, Marketing Manager of Martin Professional
(HK) to join the fair. He said: “The show is right
in the centre of the China audio industry. I think
China’s entertainment market is huge. This is where
the inter national brands should be in.”
Mr Karl-Heinz Käs, the Managing Director of RTI
Display Laser Systems (Switzerland), shared the
same sentiment: “China is a big market. We now
sell more in the Asian market than Europe. Chinese
people rely on foreign brands because they see that
it doesn’t make sense just to focus on the price
and then having a failure in the show. The Chinese
market is important for us because you can’t find
big-scale shows anywhere else.”
The sheer number of visitors to Prolight + Sound
Guangzhou also posed an ideal opportunity for
leading brands to reveal their newest products in the
market. Artsound Inter national Development, the
Chinese agent for Sennheriser, had launched their
new headphones for professional DJs at the show.
Its Marketing Director, Mr Rio Li, said of the event:
“It’s the best place to launch our new products to
the Chinese market as this is the biggest trade event
in the country. At a big show like this we can meet
with many buyers and demonstrate the advantages

of Sennheiser’s products which
ultimately increase our market
share.”
The show’s ideal location in
Guangzhou also attracted buyers
worldwide to source in the pro
audio and lighting products
manufacturing hub, especially
since this year’s inter national
visitors
have
increased
by
24.5 per cent compared to the
2013 edition. First time visitor
from the US, Mr Gary Moran, a
stagehand for the San Francisco
Convention Centre, said: “You
have pretty much everything
here from the beginning to the
end of production of a show
such as trussing and motors, the
distribution and connections. The
quality of Chinese products is
very good. I wanted to see what’s
new so that when the products
come to the US I have a better
understanding.”
“There are so many manufacturers
here, and I can find them all in
one place. If I didn’t visit this
show it would take so many
months to find contacts. Here I
make contacts and next week I
will visit factories,” added Mr
Miguel Topete, Director for Top
Line, a Mexican audio systems
manufacturer.
Of course, no tradeshow is
complete without the array of
fringe programmes that ran
concurrently with the show. The
ones hosted at Prolight + Sound
Guangzhou
focused
on
the
industry development trends and
market intelligence.
Some of the fringe programmes
included: Applications of AV

this popular seminar was a
discussion on optimising highend AV systems for hotel and
MICE industries.

Visitors were able to experience
professional concert sound effects. Some participating brands
included: CLASSIC SOUND, CPL, CVR, DE Acoustics, Drillnew
Audio, ERIC, FDB, FINESPL, IBO, JAZZPRO, LYNX, PhsydBol Audio,
QANON, RealSound, RVS, SAE, TASSO AUAL, TB, TPA, VEE, WAVK
and ZSOUND.
Other concurrent programmes included The Guangdong Performing
Industry Exchange and Trading Forum 2014, a forum where more
than 300 performance groups exchanged knowledge on the latest
industry technology and developments, and the HC360 Business
Matching Programme, which provided exhibitors with new business
opportunities as the organisers had invited more than 900 buyers to
attend the show. It was an effective avenue for networking.
Key trade associations from vertical markets also organised buyer
delegations, making the show a connecting point for performing art
professionals. Apart from meeting and networking with exhibitors, the
delegation also visited factories in Guangdong Province, one of the
world’s most important pro audio and lighting manufacturing hubs, to
understand current industry developments in the region.
Overall, it was a hugely successful and well-executed tradeshow that
has received favourable reviews from both visitors and exhibitors.
“The significant growth in numbers is a promising sign that the
show is developing in the right direction. A majority of exhibitors
and visitors also noticed that the show’s organisation, exhibit quality,
brand variety, inter nationalism and energetic business atmosphere
had improved quite a lot,” said Ms Fiona Chiew, Deputy General
Manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai).
Mr Hanrong Wu, Director of Guangdong Inter national Science and
Technology Exhibition Company (STE) added: “Moving forward, we
hope Prolight + Sound Guangzhou continues to deliver the best
business platform for professional audio and lighting market in China.”
The next Prolight + Sound Guangzhou will take place
2 to 5 March 2015. For more information, please

Pazhou Poly World Trade Center is the largest
in the show’s history, with six halls and outdoor
squares fully occupied by 425 well-known brands
from around the world. The show has also seen a
year-on-year growth of 10 per cent.
The scope of the exhibition covered stage
performance audio, public broadcast, conference
systems, stage lighting, LED, microphones, power
amplifiers and stage peripheral devices. During the
four-day exhibition, participating brands presented
a wide array of professional lighting and audio
equipment. Many participating brands also released
their newest products, and specially invited their
important clients to visit.
The exhibition attracted many outside of Guangdong.

REVIEW
According to statistics, the 2014 GETshow
attracted 48, 659 visitors from 68 countries. Based
on statistics of on-site questionnaires, 87 per cent
of exhibitors maintained that the exhibition was
more professional and advantageous; 85 per cent
of audio clients supported the “silent exhibition”
at the audio hall and 90 per cent of the audience
thought the exhibition was more advantageous and
considered it a leading trade fair in the industry.
First Silent Display of Exhibits in Three Audio
Halls
The 2014 GETshow also took the lead in holding
China’s first silent exhibition, ensuring that the
three audio halls presented “silent demonstrations”
during the four-day exhibition. This was an effort to
avoid noise pollution and to maintain a favourable
and comfortable environment for both exhibitors
and visitors to conduct business at the fair.

The organisers of the 2014 GETshow began
discussing the possibility of a “silent display”
in the audio halls at the beginning of the show’s
preparation after consulting reputable brands for
their expert opinion. What was encouraging to
know was that most of the audio exhibitors during
the exhibition complied with this arrangement, thus
preventing the deafeningly loud atmosphere that
occurred in previous years.
This green initiative was met with positive results
in the industry, with professionals highlighting
that it has brought about a new development
model for other domestic professional audio
exhibitions. On-site exhibitors and visitors (both
local and inter national) also sang praises of this
silent display. The success of this green initiative
highlighted the important role of the Guangdong
Entertainment Equipment Industry Chamber, one
of the show’s organisers, in giving full scope to
standard industrial enterprises and to promote
self-discipline among them.

and maintained that the organisation has set a

Annual Exhibition of Stage Art
In order to introduce innovative thinking and
development concepts in the industry, the 2014
GETshow continued to join hands with the Stage
Art Society of China to hold the 2014 China Stage
Art (Guangzhou) Annual Exhibition. This year’s
exhibition was in the No. 4 Hall and mainly included
works that won awards in key domestic and foreign
activities of 2013. Over 80 stage art works by 60
designers from the 10th China Art Festival, the
13th China Theatre Festival and the British WSD
Inter national Stage Art Exhibition were selected.
Furthermore, 600 latest works from theatre, film
and TV design teachers and students from 10
domestic colleges and universities were exhibited
as well. Visitors came in an endless stream during
the entire exhibition period because of the novel
and quality content that was exhibited.
During the exhibition, the organisers simultaneously
launched an award ceremony in order to better
encourage institutions, colleges and universities to
participate in the exhibition with enthusiasm. Some
of the awards given out included: the Excellent
Organisation Award, Space Creativity Award, Stage
Art Teaching Achievements Award, Planning Award
and Organisation Award.

at both fairs also represented a good result.
Altogether, 2,242 inter national exhibitors from 57
countries presented their products and services at
Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound.
“Around 110,000 visitors from 142 countries reflect
the continuing high level of interest shown by the
music and event sectors in innovations and new
developments,” said Detlef Braun, Member of the
Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt. “This
year’s Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound were
characterised by a high visitor standard and a
willingness to place orders.”
The innovative power of the event-technology
sector and the investment potential for perfectly
staged events were evident this year. A total of
897 exhibitors from 42 countries demonstrated
their innovativeness, versatility and dynamism
with the latest products from the worlds of audio,
lighting, theatre and stage technology, AV media
technology, as well as visual communication and
systems integration.
This compensated for the slight decline in visitor

Peter Klotz, CEO of Klotz Audio Interface Systems:
“For us, Prolight + Sound is the most important
platform where we can meet all national and

and the standard of both national and inter national
visitors was very high. This is decisive for us
and compensates for the slight decline in visitor

(Verband für Medien- und Veranstaltungstechnik):
“Prolight + Sound is a very important platform
for us. In particular, the seminar programme is
a relevant part where the focus is on training for
specialist personnel, a subject of great importance
for our sector, because the demands on events and,
therefore, on specialist staff continue to grow.”
The next Prolight + Sound Frankfurt will be held in
Frankfurt am Main from 15 to 18 April 2015.
Dierk Elwart of Amptown System Company (ASC)
summed up the fair in extremely positive terms:
“At Prolight + Sound, we can reach the maximum
number of customers at the same place. We have
noticed an increase in the number of visitors to our
exhibition stand for many years. This year, we were
very delighted to welcome many trade visitors from
the theatre segment.”
As in the past, numerous new products were
launched at both Prolight + Sound and Musikmesse
– from extraordinary percussion instruments,
via electronically amplified recorders, to wind
instruments that communicate via WLAN. The
mega social trend, mobility, is also gaining ground
in the musical-instrument and event sectors with
innovative products being shown, which make
music making and audio production easier when
travelling. Smartphones and tablets are increasingly
being used as electronic sound generators or
control tools for hardware. Moreover, pianists
and whole orchestras are also delighted that, for
example, they can now use tablet PCs as sheet
music. Creative water and fire elements are being
used more and more to create even more effective
events. The trend towards LED lighting also
continues. Additionally, Prolight + Sound clearly
showed the growing significance of networking and
systems integration in the field of event technology.
Prolight + Sound also underscored their status
as inter national sources of impulses with a
comprehensive spectrum of seminars, lectures
and workshops. The Eventplaza Conference

AVA magazine recently attended the PALME
Middle East show – the longest-standing
trade fair dedicated to the professional audiovisual, lighting, and systems integration industries
in the Middle East region.
With such a strategic location as Dubai, the PALME
show is considered a valuable platform for industry
players to network with people not only from the
region, but international visitors and exhibitors as well.
This year’s event saw a steady mixture of new
exhibitors and those returning after a few years’
absence, such as ADJ Group, Hall Stage and MA
Lighting. Overall, there were 200 brands represented
at the show, which was in its 12th edition.
Despite the smaller size, the show witnessed a 27
per cent increase in exhibitors from the LED lighting
industry compared to 2013. This encouraging trend
may be a result of the region’s growing interest in
environmentally-friendly technological solutions.
“Growth in this specific show vertical is not
surprising,” explained Richard Brook, the Exhibitor
Director. “Several Middle Easter n countries have
already banned incandescent light bulbs due
to their inefficiency, which opens the door for a
growing interest in LED lights. Also, a number of
GCC countries are looking to reduce their carbon
footprint, and with events such as the EXPO 2020
and 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, there has been
greater demand for LED lighting in the region as a
sustainable solution.”

such as Philips Entertainment – the professional
lighting arm of Philips – which showcased its wide
range of lighting solutions called Showline. New

The show introduced a new approach to its
educational platform by running a number of
sessions tailored to the production of live events,
as well as sound and lighting for different event
venues, entitled Event Production Drop-In Sessions.
These sessions, which ran over two days, provided
industry peers the opportunity to develop skills,
knowledge and enhance understanding of the
regional marketplace through event production and
technical expert insight.
The first day’s sessions focused on the event
production industry and covered how to meet
expectations of an inter national specification
with local availabilities. Day two focused on event
venues and the choices made regarding sound,
lighting and control systems for the benefit of both
guests and staff.
The sessions featured expert speakers, such as
Phil Grucci, the man behind the Guinness World
