This training is for new referees and referees who began refereeing in August 2015.
To become a USSF certified referee for the 2016 spring season, you will need to:
1) Complete an online training component (must complete before the clinic you wish to attend)

3) Attend an on-field training session (details sent after you are an official referee)

SUMMER LITTLE NETBUSTERS!
SOCCER FOR 3 AND 4 YEAR OLDS
AYSA’s Little NetBusters Program, which offers soccer activities for 3 and 4 year old players, has become a hugely popular
program. This fun introduction to soccer will feature age appropriate soccer activities, rather than formal games. Each
session will last one hour, and will be led by trained coaches
using an age appropriate curriculum.
Registration is limited and will close when the program is full. Many interested kids were turned
away last summer. We strongly encourage early registration!
Players must be either 3 or 4 years old on July 31, 2016.

After 15 years playing professional soccer – including playing for the U.S. Men’s National
Team in the 2002 World Cup – Tony Sanneh moved back to St. Paul in 2009 to dedicate
himself full-time to the Sanneh Foundation. The Sanneh Foundation, a youth development
organization, provides life skills programs for at-risk children using soccer as the catalyst to empower kids’ lives and unite
communities. They also give thousands of kids a safe, fun summer camp experience for free! Camps are run by professional
coaches and incorporate guidance and information about health, education, drugs and alcohol, and cultural awareness. The
Sanneh Foundation has multiple programs they run for youth in the Twin Cities area. Some of their programs are below. Learn

The Striker/Keeper camp is intended for boys and girls
ages 9-15 that are looking to develop and enhance
attacking or goalkeeping skills. Strikers will focus on
the most exciting aspects of the game, shooting,
finishing, combination plays and striker movement
while keepers will train to improve their shot stopping,
footwork/mobility, intercepting crosses and distribution
skills.

If you love the game, this is a great chance to improve
your skills. Begin the week with individual skill
development progressing to fun, age appropriate
games. Learn the correct techniques for passing and
receiving, dribbling and shooting, defending, and
individual and team tactics. This is a great opportunity
for players to improve their game before AYSA leagues
begin in August.
These camps will provide players with high-level skills training in a fun environment. The coaches are
Dave Robinson and Archie Clark. Dave is a coach for the College of St. Scholastica’s men’s and women’s
soccer teams. He holds a National Youth Coaching License and is a member of the ODP coaching staff
for Minnesota Youth Soccer. Archie is head coach of the Cloquet Esko Carlton High School boys’ soccer
team. He holds a National D Coaching License and a NSCAA advanced regional diploma. Goalkeepers will
be trained by Jake Lammi, former CSS and Denfeld HS goalkeeper. Jake has coached keepers for UMD,
Denfeld HS, and many local competitive soccer teams.

AYSA is hosting coaching clinics designed to provide recreational and competitive coaches with the tools to run fun, efficient
practices, and improve their game strategy. If you want to improve your coaching skills, these are the courses to take!

Integrating the Goalkeeper into Team Training

This 5-hour course is designed to improve all coaches’ ability to teach the application of technique in the game: how to pass, receive,
dribble, shoot, head, and defend including goalkeeping. Technical aspects of these skills will be broken down for coaches to analyze
within game-like activities best suited for training players in a team setting. This is a stand-alone offering and not a prerequisite for any
other course, though serves as preparation for or as a supplement to National “E” and “D” License courses.

AYSA Referee Awards
Each year, the Arrowhead Youth Soccer Board of Directors recognizes outstanding young referees from the previous
season. The referees are nominated by AYSA’s Referee Director, with input from senior referees. At the 2016
Annual meeting, the following referees will receive recognition for their work during the 2015 season.
Outstanding Female Referee for 2015: Stella Peckham
Stella started her refereeing career in the fall of 2013 after attending both levels of our AYSA Lower Division training.
She was 14 when she started refereeing that August, and then turned 16 this past spring. Stella has refereed in
three Fall seasons, and two Upper Division seasons, and this year she worked 80 games. All of the mentors and
senior referees agreed that Stella showed a remarkable growth and improvement in her refereeing skills and
confidence during this past year. She has proven to be a dependable and responsible referee who has risen to the
challenge of those more difficult level games assigned to her. Stella was also chosen to join our mentor program,
and began working with our younger referees this fall. She offers advice to our young referees with a very easy and
comfortable teaching style.
Outstanding Male Referee for 2015: Spencer Johnson
Spencer attended his first AYSA clinic and started refereeing in the fall of 2013, when he was 14 years old. He was a
very dedicated student of the laws of the game. His understanding of the rules and their proper application come
natural to him. He is confident, but calm when he deals with challenging situations. He is friendly but firm with
decisions and communication. In his three years of refereeing, he has become one of our most competent and
reliable officials. He has a very composed and confident attitude. He is also very willing to ask questions, and accept
feedback from his mentors, instructors and fellow referees. Spencer is also very involved in Boy Scouts and with
church activities, but manages to make himself available to ref many games for us.
Rookie Female Referee for 2015: Zoe Simpson
Zoe attended her first clinic in April 2015 and was USSF certified for the Upper Division. Zoe impressed her mentors
and fellow referee with her willingness to listen and learn, and appeared more confident and competent with each
assignment she worked. She works hard to stay close to play, and communicates clearly and firmly with both
players and coaches. She has a strong and firm confidence about her that shows everyone she is in charge. Her
understanding of game mechanics and game management is exceptional considering her age and limited
experience.
Rookie Male Referee for 2015: Jason Broska, Jr.
Jason started refereeing in the fall of 2014, when he was just 10 years old. This spring he earned his USSF
certification in April, and started working as an AR in Upper Division games. Jason has already become one of our
most reliable and committed young referees. He finished the season this year when he was only 11, having worked
over 100 games in just his first year. He is one of the most impressive young referees we have seen come our way
for some time, and he is already talking about how exited he is to come back and ref with us next season.
AYSA Awards Two College Scholarships
Each year AYSA awards two $1,000 college scholarships to students that have participated in our program.

Mark is attending the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at UMD. His educational goal is to complete a Bachelor of
Science degree in Civil Engineering. He graduated from Denfeld High School with a 3.95 G.P.A. Mark has played soccer for
many years, participating in the AYSA, Gitchi Gummi, and Denfeld H.S. programs. He has also coached AYSA and Gitchi Gummi
teams as well as working on and maintaining AYSA soccer fields. Mark was very active in other activities in high school and is
an active member in his church. He plans on supporting soccer in the future by playing and especially coaching young players.
Madison graduated from Hermantown High School with a G.P.A. of 3.79. She is attending the University of Denver in Colorado
where she is majoring in International Studies and Management, and minoring in Business Administration. She possibly will
attend Law School after her undergraduate years. Madison has played in Hermantown for AYSA teams or high school teams
since she was six years old. The Lady Hawks have been conference champions for four years running and she captained her
team in her senior year. Madison is also very active outside of soccer. She is an alpine skier, was on the student council, a
member of the National Honor Society, and a Junior Rotarian. She, on behalf of her church, has volunteered at the soup
kitchen, nursing homes, and early childhood centers. She looks forward to supporting soccer by coaching her children's teams
someday. She would also like to be a member of a youth soccer board of directors.
The Arrowhead Youth Soccer College Scholarship Program was established in the year 2000 through the efforts of
the AYSA Board of Directors. Applications are available on the AYSA website and in area high school
guidance offices. Recipients are selected by the AYSA Board in the fall of the year.

CHANGES TO AYSA’S LOWER DIVISION BEGINNING IN 2016
The US Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer have created some nation-wide recommendations/changes for
youth soccer ages 12 years old and younger. AYSA has responded by making the following changes to the 2016
Lower Division season beginning in August.
- The U12 league will play 9v9 instead of 11v11.
A move to small sided soccer will increase touches and allow players to be more involved on the field.
- The field and goal size for U12 will be decreased.
Reducing the field and goal size will create a more appropriate playing area for a 9v9 game.
- There will no longer be referees at the U8 level.
This reduces the amount of center referees needed and encourages coaches to learn the basic game
rules.
- The U8 league will play 5v5 (4 field players and a keeper) instead of 6v6.
This allows for more involvement and eases game management for coaches.
- There will be assistant referees assigned to U12 games.
This allows for a more supportive entry/training point for our new referees.
- The number of U12 games will be reduced from 12 to 10.
This will ease the referee shortage, and can shorten the length of the season for some teams. The
number of U13 games will remain at 12.

West Ham United Football Club from London, England,
have arguably one of the greatest youth academies in the
world. The West Ham United International Academy was
established to identify players who may one day be
good enough to play for the West Ham Premiere League
first team.
Will You Be The One?
The camp, overseen by a senior member of the West
Ham Academy coaching staff, is open to all U9-U18
players. Top players at this camp will be invited to the
2016 West Ham United International Academy National
Residential Camp, staffed by the Academy coaches from
the West Ham United Academy of London and directed
by Academy Director Tony Carr. Players excelling there
will be invited to London for a West Ham United Academy
experience.
