Davidson, MD, FACP, MAC$E, was born in Costa Rica and is a clinical professor of medicine at the Touchstone Diabetes Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Arriving in Dallas with his wife, Ana, and sons in 1974, Dr. Davidson directed the endocrine division at Methodist Hospital, co-chairing its internal medicine residency program and joining the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center shortly thereafter. In the 1980s Dr. Davidson moved to practice endocrinology at Medical City Dallas, and since 2005 he has been based at the University. Dr. Davidson serves as the Honorary Consul of Costa Rica for North Texas, and has a long list of accomplishments. He previously served as the chair of the Texas Diabetes Council, appointed by Governor Ann Richards, and as a member of the board of directors of the Texas Department of Health Services, appointed by Governor Rick Perry. He was appointed by then-Governor George W. Bush as a regent of Midwestern State University, and he is a founder of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, having served as a board member from its formation. With an Israeli colleague, Dr. Davidson developed international medical education programs focused on obesity, diabetes and hypertension that have taken place in Berlin, Prague, Barcelona, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Panama and other locations. In 2009 Dr. Davidson was part of the faculty that opened the Diabetes Center at Laniado Hospital in Israel. The recipient of many honors and awards, Dr. Davidson delivered the Silver Jubilee Lecture of the Philippines Diabetes Society in Manila this past July, and has been recognized by numerous organizations, including the American College of Endocrinology, Minority Health, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Diabetes Association, and in Mexican Academy of Medicine. Dr. Davidson and his wife Ana are active members at the Dallas JCC, where he served on the board of directors. They have been members of Tiferet Israel Congregation for 40 years. Their sons live in Miami with their families. gala “The need is real, and the time is now. We must be prepared." --Dr. Amnon Rofe, CEO, The Bnai Zion Medical Center The Bnai Zion Medical Center is a municipal hospital with 450 beds that provides exemplary medical care and services to the residents of Haifa and Israel’s northern communities without regard to ethnicity or religion. A leading teaching and research hospital affiliated with the B. Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion (Israel's Institute of Technology), its innovations and accomplishments have received international recognition. Israel's enemies are relentless in their determination to inflict harm on the Jewish State. Missiles from Gaza were aimed at the north of Israel, Hezbollah continues to arm in Lebanon, Al Nusra Front forces are at the Syrian border, and ISIS remains a growing concern. The priority of the hospital is the construction of a new underground protected emergency department, fortified against nuclear, biological, chemical and conventional attack, where staff can provide life-saving treatment to patients in a safe and secure environment. The new underground emergency facility has been designed and first steps have been taken toward breaking ground, but outside funds are needed for its completion. We know you care about Israel's safety. We appreciate your generosity. our PROJECTS in ISRAEL AT THE BNAI ZION MEDICAL CENTER Making Bold Strides Forward The Urology Department Celebrates 50 Years THE MEDICAL CENTER is the MOST PREFERRED HOSPITAL for NORTHERN INTERNS M edical students recently rated the Bnai Zion Medical Center third nationally and first in northern Israel on the list of preferred hospitals for internship/residency. They explained their preference as a tribute to the high academic level of senior physicians and other well-trained professionals in the Medical Center. Dr. Amnon Rofe, the hospital CEO, sees this result as an impressive achievement, saying, “I’m very proud that the professionalism and humanity of our staff has been acknowledged in this way. This is the second year in a row that medical students have chosen us, which proves that we continue to be a center of excellence nationally, and even internationally.” Dr. Elad Schiff, Director of Internship, explains that the hospital invests in grooming interns, providing quality tutoring that focuses on emergency situations during rotations. In addition, the hospital has a mentoring project in which thirty senior physicians escort interns through their first year, a training model now assimilated at other hospitals in Israel. In March the urology department celebrated fifty years of extensive work, research and education. A festive ceremony was organized with the mayor of Haifa, hospital management and the entire staff of the department since its earliest days. It was an excellent opportunity to inaugurate the newly renovated department, now a spacious facility equipped with hospitalization and treatment rooms conforming to 21st Century hospitalization standards. Prof. Ofer Nativ, the head of the department, well known in Israel and abroad for his specialization in prostate cancer, summarized the major achievements of the department over the years, focusing on research, education, and collaboration with many centers throughout the world. june 2014 VO I CE 25 The First Time in Israel: A New Method for Adrenalectomy Adrenalectomy is the surgical removal of one or both adrenal glands, usually advised for patients with tumors of the adrenal glands. The procedure can be performed using an open incision (laparotomy) or laparoscopic technique. The surgery department has begun to perform adrenalectomies using a more advanced technique via a direct cut in the back instead of the stomach, instead of using the laparoscopic technique (cutting small cuts in the stomach). Dr. Ibrahim Matar, chairman of the department, and Dr. Gideon Sroka, deputy, have successfully performed eleven surgeries using this method. Recently they removed both adrenal glands by using the new technique, and it took 25% less time compared to other techniques. A MATHEMATIC MODEL PREDICTS REPETITION of URINARY B"DDER CANCER A mathematic model that can predict the repetition of urinary bladder cancer based on a blood test was developed at the Medical Center by Prof. Yacov Rubenstein of the faculty of mathematics at the Technion, and Prof. Sarel Halachmi, the deputy director of the urology department. This work is based on the concept that the best solutions will derive from a cooperative effort by an engineer, mathematician, and physician. Prof. Halachmi met Prof. Rubenstein, a math specialist of biological systems. Following the meeting, Prof. Halachmi mentioned the topic of urinary bladder cancer, which cannot be cured even after successful treatment. Up to 70% of patients will experience repetition, and 15% will experience an increase in tumors. Currently doctors have no way to predict who will experience a repetition, and consequently this disease requires close follow-up and unpleasant examinations. Prof. Halachmi said they discussed customizing the follow-up of each patient, based on his needs. They knew that the ratio of white blood cells in a simple blood test could indicate repetition, but this parameter was not tested on urinary bladder cancer patients. With the help of Prof. Rubenstein, the Medical Center developed a mathematic model that established a value indicating the repetition of the cancer, and a value to show freedom from the disease. This model manages to predict a patient’s condition with 80-90% accuracy. Prof. Halachni and Rubenstein continue to work together in the field of urinary bladder cancer, and their findings will be published soon in the prestigious journal Urologic Oncology. september 2014 VO I CE 21 our PROJECTS in ISRAEL The Bnai Zion Medical Center: New Treatments Offer New Hope An Acoustic Stage Enhances the Experience of Visually Impaired Children Ofarim is the rehabilitation daycare center for blind and visually impaired infants up to age three. Part of the Child Development Center, it offers therapy, paramedical treatments, and typical nursery school activities, and is the best option for the rehabilitation and education of these infants. A new acoustic stage is part of an innovative treatment designed to help these children not only hear music, but feel it. According to Prof. Emanuel Tirosh, head of the Child Development Center, the acoustic stage allows 20 VO I C E september 2014 these children to develop other senses as compensation for the lack of vision, with step shoes that encourage movement and provide children a physical motion experience. Research indicates that one system of the senses can replace another system, so in this case, hearing and feeling can replace vision. Children with visual challenges are not born with other developed senses, thus it is necessary to help them develop alternative senses. WITH APPRECIATION TO OUR SPONSORS DR.
