It’s October.....and you have permission! Fall is here and many great activities are in the works here at First Presbyterian Church. “Thank you” to all the dads and substitute dads for taking time out to play at school with your child! Our annual Dad’s Night is a wonderful way to kick off the school year. Children love to talk about their Halloween costumes, but they may not love to wear their costumes! Fantasy and make-believe are important concepts that children need in order to process what they don’t have concrete knowledge of. Let your child choose their costume and avoid masks. Children believe whatever it is they see with their own eyes. It is quite all right if they say, “No, I don’t want to wear it!” On October 16 at 10:16 a.m. we will be participating in the GREAT AMERICAN SHAKEOUT. This is a state wide earthquake drill. Children, attending on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, are still easing in to the idea whether or not preschool is fun. They will have an opportunity to dress up and celebrate Halloween in their own classroom. Make sure to bring the whole family to the annual All Hallow’s Eve festivities on Sunday, October 26 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Families With Children Ministry, Church and Preschool staff will get the band in tune, the dogs on the grill, and set up the tricks and treats! Bring the whole family and share the fun with all. So, if you are “old” or “sort of old” you might want to capitalize on this wonderful season and enjoy the permission to pretend with your child. Mon. - Fri., November 24 - 28: No School/ Thanksgiving Break. 1 Staying Healthy! Parking Lot Safety Request The cold and flu season is gearing up. Help us to provide a healthy environment for your child and for our staff. In order to assure a safe drop off and pick up experience for our families please remember to put cell phones away when driving. No call or text is more important than our little ones. Each year we have children or family members who have health systems compromised by germs due to a physical condition and treatments (such as chemo and radiation). Please be extra considerate and help us avoid the spread of illness. A Special Invitation! Join us on Sunday, October 26, for our annual All Hallows Eve celebration. Come enjoy the live music, hot dogs on the grill, Preschool classrooms open with games, a cake walk and the Great Hall filled with fun booths and games. This is a fun event where children, and adults, can find that special friendly costume and dress up! •Wash, wash, wash those hands •Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the bend in their arm - not in their hands •Keep a child home that has had a fever or has vomited in the last 24 hours. (Even if your child wants to come to school they are susceptible to a relapse. Children’s Bible Study Notes! This month’s bible study note is from Pastor Liz: •Children MUST BE vomit/fever FREE for 24 hours before returning. On the 31st is Halloween. As you are preparing your child’s costume, did you ever wonder where the whole concept of Halloween came from? Or why we dress up? Or eat certain things? Halloween or All Hallows Eve began as a Celtic Harvest festival that was Christianized. It was set aside as a feast day to remember those who had past away. It was also traditionally an abstinence day where people were not to eat meat. This is why we have candy apples, cider and other vegetarian dishes on that day. This celebration reminds us that there is humor and ridicule in the face of death because we are not left alone, but Christ continues to live with and through us both in this life and in eternity. •Do not send a child to school medicated. Classroom Readers Each year Pastor Liz visits each classroom and reads to the children. If you are interested in being a classroom reader please let your child’s teacher know. Volunteers Needed We would love to have some parent volunteers to assist us during our school picture days. Please stop by the office and let us know if you are available to volunteer.
