PUEZ-ODLE NATURE PARK
This encompasses an area of around 10,722 hectares
(41 square miles) and can be called the “construction
shed” of the Dolomites. In particular, geologists find there
all of the types of rock, layers of deposits, and weathered
forms of minerals that are typical to the Dolomites.
Plateaus that have developed into karsts, majestic rows
of cliffs, gently rolling, fertile Alpine pastures situated
against bizarrely rugged mountain silhouettes, deeply
carved erosion valleys, and dark coniferous forests form
a variety of landscapes that are rarely to be found in such
a restricted space. The wealth of fossils provides a view
of the different eras in the history of the earth.

VEDRETTE DI RIES-AURINA NATURE PARK
With an area of around 31,320 hectares (121 square
miles) and over eighty peaks topping 3,000 meters
(nearly 10,000 feet), it has the most glaciers of any
nature park in South Tyrol. Another characteristic feature
of the park is the wealth of water in all of its many
forms. Mountain streams plunge over sheets of rock,
cliffs, and valley plateaus into the depths. Out of the
many waterfalls here, the Cascate di Riva-Reinbachfälle
is particularly worthy of mention. It leaps from a valley
plateau near Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers far below,
providing a worthwhile hiking destination. At the end of
the Valle Anterselva-Antholzertal is the Lago d’AnterselvaAntholzer See lake. It is the third largest natural lake
in South Tyrol and, along with its surrounding area, is
protected as a biotope.

FANES-SENES-BRAIES NATURE PARK
This park covers an area or approximately 25,453
hectares (98 square miles). It has been a UNESCO
World Heritage site since 2009. Broad sections of the
park are of great scientific significance as a result of its
complex geomorphology. The Fanes and Senes-Sennes
plateaus, a popular hiking area, are characterized by
the formation of karsts, with the typical fissures and
hollows in which small lakes form. Scattered across the
mountain slopes are the typical Ladin hamlets known
as viles with their ancient wooden construction. These
groups of farms were self-sufficient since they shared
working quarters, ovens, etc. with each other.
An aerial image that can be walked on
makes it possible for visitors to get a bird’s
eye view of the nature park. The “Touch
the Mountains” exhibition area deals with
the main topic of the nature park, the geology of the Dolomites. In the “Hall of Natural Wonders”, visitors can learn about
animal furs, bird eggs, feathers, animal
tracks, teeth, antlers, and medicinal herbs.

MMM CORONES
South Tyrol’s Highest Museum
The Kronplatz is home to the sixth Messner Mountain Museum. The mountain forms the point of intersection of
the three cultures in South Tyrol: the German, the Italian, and the Ladin. This unique location of the Kronplatz
made it decisive for Reinhold Messner to build his last museum here. It will be dedicated to the subject of
“cliffs” and to the life of mountain climbers, which will be illustrated by objects from his collections. The
architectural implementation of the ideas was entrusted to the studio of the world-renowned architect Zaha
Hadid, who is regarded as the most talented and innovative architect of our time. In order to intrude as
little as possible upon the landscape and to avoid an additional obstruction of the peak, a large part of the
museum will be located below ground. The grand opening of the museum is planned for September 2014.

AN OLD CHEESEMAKING TRADITION
HANDED DOWN THROUGH THE GENERATIONS
It is created according to recipes that have been passed
down, made either at the Alpine pasture or at the farmhouse
in the valley. Tradition dictates that when the Graukäse
(aged Tyrolean grey cheese) is produced up at the pasture,
it is made by men, but down in the village, it is the women
who handle the task. >>
Valle Aurina Graukäse | Kronplatz Summer | 41
>> That explains the enormous variety of the most
different types and forms. Nevertheless, Valle Aurina
Graukäse is regarded as an absolute rarity, since large
quantities of it do not make their way onto the market
for public consumption. In 2005, it won the prestigious
“Presidio” award. That is the highest prize awarded by
the “Slow Food” organisation which is received by only
especially precious regional foods whose existence is
threatened. It is, so to speak, a sort of “world heritage
distinction” for foodstuffs.
PRODUCTION
Fresh, lukewarm cow’s milk is separated by a
centrifuge into cream and skim milk. The skim milk is
then thickened by means of lactic acid bacteria that
are necessary for the acidification process (duration:
one to two days). After that, the mass is warmed to a
temperature of 40-55° C (104-131° F). As a result of
the slow warming, the curds, which in the local dialect
are called Tschotte, separate from the whey and stick
together on the surface. The curds are then removed,

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHEESE
The Selva dei Molini-Mühlwaldertal valley is the one in
South Tyrol with the greatest density of farmhouse cheese
makers. For that reason, the summer programme is
completely dedicated to the subject of “cheese”. Every
Thursday, a gourmet hike filled with adventure leads to
the cheese making farmhouses of the Selva dei Molini
Valley. And you can also participate in the production
of Graukäse or else be present as milk is processed into
yoghurt.
CHEESE FESTIVAL
CAMPO TURES
This is one of the most important cheese events in the Alps.
Over the course of three days, around a hundred
producers from all of Europe present nearly a thousand
different kinds of cheese. The top chefs from South Tyrol
will tickle your taste buds with creative cheese dishes,
experts of “good taste” will train your senses with special
tastings, and the little “cheese mice” can experience
everything having to do with cheese and milk.

Lovely panoramas, striking mountain

informative views of everyday life on the farm.
This includes baking bread, making cheese, and
visiting a farm. With mountain hikes, you will

tied to history (2014 will mark the one hundredth

Lace making
THE ART OF LACE
„RUMPL“
Lace making is an art that is done by hand
here in the traditional manner in PredoiPrettau and Casere-Kasern. Toward the end
of the nineteenth century, after the closing of
the local mine, the inhabitants of Predoi had
to look for a new way of making a living. For
that reason, some of the women were sent to
Vienna to learn the art of lace making. As a
result of the support of the operators of the mine
and the village priest, this side occupation
turned into the production of genuine art, as
well as a welcome source of income.
In some farmhouses in the Val CasiesGsieser Tal, the entertainment around the
Carnival period was Rumpl. This involves
a handcarved board with up to eighteen
pins and three game pieces. Because it
was very special and extremely valuable,
not all farmers had such a board. And so
the practice developed that not only one’s

Handicraft
In order to make lace, the linen threads are
pinned to the lace cushion, which is known
as the Pinggl in the local dialect. Hanging at
the end of the threads is the bobbin, a sort of
spool which is turned in order to help create
the pattern.
In 1994, a lace making association was
founded in Predoi which took on the task
of passing this technique on to the new
generations. Today, the best lace is used for
the blouses of traditional costumes, clothing
for church, table linens, and Christmas tree
ornaments.

BANDS
>> but also the neighbours from nearby all
came together for the game.
Village bands have a grand tradition in
South Tyrol. Friends of wind music and
marches join together into groups and
display their abilities at local festivals,
concerts, and processions. Nearly every
village has an amateur band or a farmer’s
band which, dressed in traditional costume, lends a very special note to every
event. Rehearsals are held every week
during the winter to learn the programme
for the next concert season. Old marches,
beautiful waltzes, and contemporary music are all rehearsed with the bandleader.
The first concerts then take place in the
spring, and later on there are appearances at village and municipal festivals as
well as on holidays and holy day events.
The play involves the game piece (a sort of
top) having a string wound around it which
is then pulled. The game pieces then spin
over the board and touch the pins. Every
pin has a point value, and these are added
up after the pins have been knocked over.
There are several different examples of
the Rumpl that exist today, allowing the
tradition of this fascinating game to live on.
Today, the district of Brunico is proud to
boast of no fewer than fifty-four bands!
Wattn
„WATTN“
Card Game
This is the most traditional and popular parlour
game in South Tyrol, and it is usually played
with thirty-three cards. Four people play the
game, with two-member teams sitting across
from each other. The pair that is the first to get
three tricks wins the round. The rules of the
game may vary, however, from one location
to another. Wattn has a very long tradition
and is a typical example of the sociability of
South Tyroleans.

A hilltop, a picturesque inner courtyard, and a castle

defiant, and yet the home to great spirits: Oswald von
Wolkenstein spent several years of his restless life here
around 1520, and the famous American poet Ezra
Pound also found a refuge for himself and his family
here during the turmoil of the Second World War.
Today the castle houses a hospitality establishment.

AROMA THERAPY
Essential oils are volatile, highly concentrated active substances
that smell good. They are obtained from many different plants
and consist of a multitude of individual ingredients. The family
company Bergila located in Issengo-Issing near Falzes-Pfalzen
grows inspected organic herbs and, with the help of processes
that have been handed down, produces essential oils of the
finest quality. These oils can lastingly change physical, mental,
and emotional processes.
Bergila Mountain Pine Oil
The active substances of the mountain pine have an expectorant, disinfecting, and germicidal effect which works like a
balm on the breathing passages and is also ideal for improving the air indoors. In the sauna, too, mountain pine is a
well-known, tried and true aromatic substance.

The Kronplatz, South Tyrol’s No. 1 Ski Mountain, which
in 2012 was chosen as Italy’s best ski resort, gives
the Holiday Region its name.
Also belonging to the
Kronplatz Ski Mountain are the ski lifts in the Valle
Anterselva-Antholzertal, Val Casies-Gsieser Tal, Tesido-Taisten, Terento-Terenten and Antermoia-Untermoi.
On top of that, the skiing mountain is also directly
connected with “Dolomiti Superski”, Europe’s largest ski
