New Medium of Bio-filtration for Aquaculture
New Medium of Bio-filtration for Aquaculture The newest Bio-filter Medium suitable for 21st Century We Nihon Kensetsu Gijutsu Co., Ltd. have been doing research and development on water purification media and have begun large-scale sales of the product, Crystal Bio. This new product is made from a glass substance in Nihon Kensetsu Gijutsu Co., Ltd. It has an extraordinary porous structure of light-weight ceramic, which is obtained by burning the mixture of glass substance particles and foaming agent at high temperature of 900 °C. We have jointly studied bio-filter for aquaculture with the Kyushu Laboratory of Aquatic Biology. We have conducted repeated examinations of the effect on water puri fication in the laboratory and on Ogata Koi Farm Co., Ltd. in Fukuoka, Japan. We have gained excellent results of biological water purification for this product. *An actual pond using Crystal Bio in Ogata Koi Farm (50 m3 of Crystal Bio in 400 tons of water) (The circulation of water: 10~12 times/ day) Excellent nitrification Easy maintenance Crystal Bio has an extraordinary Crystal Bio is made up of small large amount of surface area be particles with a 10 to 50 mm in cause of its porous structure, diameter. This small, light weight which enables propagation of medium can fit into any filtering aerobic bacteria in it. tank and would save a lot of Crystal Bio itself is a little alka trouble, filling and cleaning. line and can buffer the pH of rear ing water, which works to prevent the pH of water from dropping by accelerated nitrification. Cost effectiveness This product purifies the existing water, which means you aren't re quired to use so much new fresh water to refill your pond with clean water. This will lead to a re duction of water heating cost be cause you will use the existing water, which doesn't need to be heated, for a longer period of time. ~ -- ---- - -------- - - ------------------- ~ --- - ~ -- Comparison between Crystal Sio and plastic filter commonly used on koi farms rearing tank (400L) *The rearing water was changed so the concentrations of NH4-N and N0 2-N do not exceed 20mgIL and 40 mglL respectively. An experimental tank of soaking filtration system 25 :::I Comparison of the red and blue lines in this figure shows NH 4 -N concentration drops two days earlier than the red line. Furthermore, the blue line remains below O.4mg/L level for a long time. On the contrary, the red line shows that NH4 -N concentration drop reaches lmg/L but it gradu ally increases according to the passage of days. This result indicates that Crystal Bio's porous structure is superior as a habitat for microorganisms including nitrifying bacteria. 20 C, §. ~ r.~ z o 0 days 1--~cry~s~tali]B!?:ioli!(N9]022i.Ni[)l- ..... 400 Plastic Filter ~N02.N) - *Nitrification: chemical action of producing nitrous acid and nitric acid from ammonia by ammonia oxidizing bacteria and nitrous acid oxidizing bacteria. := ~~::i~l ~ife~ (~6;~~) 30 days 10 ::I: 0. r------------r===;;:::::;:;:::;;;::=i1 7 5 0);-----:''::"0-----::2'::"0-----::3'::"0---~40 days N0 2-N concentration increases faster, and in greater amount, in Crystal Bio treated water than by a plastic filter. It suddenly drops after the twenty-eighth day after the be ginning of the test. While N0 2-N concentration decline by a plastic filter begins after thirty three days. As for N0 3 -N concentration, it remains below lOmg/L by Crystal Bio treatment but its concentration by a plastic filter treatment remains 200 to 250mg/L. This indicates that denitri fication was done by anaerobic microorganisms in Crystal Bio. *Denitrification: chemical action or process of breaking nitrogen compounds into molecular nitrogen mainly by microbes. The blue line shows that the pH of the rearing water treated by Crystal Bio gradually decreases and keeps the water within a weak alkaline level until the 26th day after the be ginning of the test, and then is gradually acidified. This in dicates that Crystal Bio itself is a weak alkaline and holds buffering faculty. * Similar results were obtained by using sprinkling filtration system.
