Volume 3, No. 2 Summer 2009 Sunset Celebrates 4th of July Hundreds of Sunset Islanders donned their best red, white, and blue attire and paraded from the clubhouse to the fountains showing plenty of patriotic style this Independence Day. Kids and dogs competed for prizes in three parade categories and took home treats from Candy Kitchen! At the end of the parade everyone was treated to free hot dogs and lemonade. An Island bake sale raised $100 for the local humane society. The 2009 Pony Swim and auction will be held July 29 and 30th. Living the Legend of Chincoteague It is one of the most romantic legends of the area: wild ponies, travelling to South America on board a 16th century Spanish galleon, are forced overboard in a storm that grounds the ship off the coast of Maryland. The ponies swim to safety and begin a new herd on an island known as “Beautiful Land Across Water” or “Assateague.” The legend is told in the uber-popular children’s book “Misty of Chincoteague.” It is relived each summer by thousands who flock to the Eastern Shore to see the horses’ offspring. Annually, on the last Wednesday of July, volunteer firemen called “saltwater cowboys” round up the wild ponies of Assateague and swim them across the channel to Chincoteague Island. The pony swim has become an international event, with tourists and media visiting from as far away as Japan, Australia and South Africa. The Sunset Islander: Summer 2009 following day, a select number of ponies are sold at auction to raise money for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. Assateague ponies now reside in nearly every state of the Union. If you go: Check the tides: The pony swim happens at “slack” or low tide between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Often the time for the swim isn’t determined until just before the event. Go early: Thousands of people attend the pony swim each year, many staking out a spot with a view hours before the start of the event. Dress appropriately: The best view is often near (or in) the water. There is a good chance you will get wet or muddy or both. Bug spray: Trust me. Page 2 No Ketchup? No Problem! Island Store offers everything from bagels to bait It never fails: the crabs are steamed, the corn on the cob is piping hot and the dozen people you’ve invited for dinner are ready to dig in. “Pass the butter,” requests a guest. That’s when you realize...you’re out of butter. Anywhere else in Ocean City, a last minute grocery run means 20 minutes fighting Coastal Highway traffic while the sweet corn gets cold. Here at Sunset Island, it means a stroll to the corner store where staples such as butter, salt, sugar and milk are readily available. Need steak sauce? It’s here. Cold medicine? Ditto. This summer the Island store offers fresh pastries for breakfast (coftea bags milk chips cookies peanut butter jelly bread relish mustard mac and cheese salad dressing soy sauce tomato paste rice olive oil brown sugar pasta sauce parmesan cheese fee and newspapers, too!), salads and sandwiches for lunch and locally produced ice cream all day long. Fishermen will find bait and other supplies, kids can browse the “penny” candy, and chefs will appreciate the wide variety of sauces, spices and kitchen necessities in stock. Before you head home, pick up a Sunset Island sweatshirt or hat as a souvenir. And don’t forget store manager Rick Vach’s wide selection of wine: buy six bottles and receive a 10% discount; buy 12 bottles and get a 15% discount. Here’s just a sampling of other items available: pancake mix instant soup cold beer tuna hot dogs chocolate syrup sunscreen rubbing alcohol bandages toothpaste deodorant laundry detergent trash bags cleaning supplies dish soap corkscrews straw hats logo shirts Wet Weather Damages Island Trees The great amount of rain this spring has made some of our landscaping lush and beautiful, but it has not been kind to the Ash Trees. Extremely wet weather causes a condition known as Ash Rust. Orange pods appear along the branches of the trees. The trees loose most or all of the leaves. The trees appear to be dead. The tree survives and leaves will regenerate next summer. However, in 2009, the trees surrounding the condominiums on Hidden Cove Way and some other areas of the island will be losing most of their foliage. Management has called in several experts to review the tree problem, and unfortunately at this time nothing can be done. Management will continue to monitor the trees and will be looking for new foliage in spring of 2010. -Melissa Esham Take a Book! Leave a Book! Sunset Island library Sunset Islander: Summer 2009 Hundreds of books are sitting in the Sunset Island Library waiting for the chance to become your summer beach read. Want to start a book club? Email Jackie Jennings at Jennings. communications@comcast.net. Don’t Make Us Crabby! Crabbing and fishing are allowed on the crabbing and fishing pier only. I brought my six-year-old son and was surprised at his level of excitement. He had written the numbers from 1 – 24 on a piece of paper so we could make a good list of all the different birds we saw. I thought we were being ambitious but found out immediately that we were on an adventure. We started off on the beach outside of the pool where we saw the laughing gulls known for the laughing sounds they emit and recognizable from other gulls by there black heads. We not only looked for birds we listened to the different sounds that the birds made. Carol Sottili, our leader, also had us looking at the tadpoles and other wildlife viewable around the island. At the end of our walk we had surpassed our goal of 24 birds and had seen Sunset Islander: Summer 2009 27 different species of birds. My son was most excited about seeing a Willet, because that is his school’s mascot. I myself was impressed with the homeowners who took time out to help others develop an appreciation of birds and wildlife. My son thinks next time we should do a walk of all the different flowers and plants and learn the names and how many different kinds of plants we have at Sunset Island. The owners suggested that we look at the different breeds of dogs at Sunset. My only suggestion is that next time we end with a big breakfast! Thank you to Carol Sottili, and all the homeowners that made our morning successful.
