Anna van Sminia decided to design a programme for young people to get a better insight into the process of European integration and to raise their awareness of European citizenship. To achieve this, simulation sessions of the European Parliament were organised. As part of the programme, a great deal of attention was paid to the diversity of European cultures and languages, making young people aware of the fact that diversity should not separate people, but should enrich their way of life and thinking. As many schools as possible, from different regions, with students from different social backgrounds were invited to join this project. Anna van Sminia: After five years of national and regional simulation sessions of the European Parliament in the Netherlands, it was time to say “yes” to the request of several member states, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg and the UK, to organise an international MEP conference for all member states, only 12 at that time, in The Netherlands. Saying “yes” to this request was the start of a very successful international project giving thousands of young people the opportunity to take part in a programme that enriches their way of life and thinking. Saying “yes” to this request was a lot of work for my husband and myself and meant that the programme was constantly on our mind. The concept was so successful that it has found its way to all 28 member states and 2 EU candidate countries. The session in Vilnius is the 39th international conference and the 2nd international conference in Lithuania. It is more than a joy to see many young people taking part in school-, regional- national- and international sessions under the guidance of so many very capable and dedicated teachers and national coordinators. From the start we made sure that the Model European Parliament would be open to young people from different social and geographical backgrounds, within the possibilities of the member- and candidate states involved. Europe has a bright future, even if we look at the dark clouds hanging above us! We have great confidence in the young people of Europe. They are “the decision makers of the future” and we are sure that they will make the right decisions! Do you know that: --during the MEP conference in Paris (1996), a French senator nearly had a heart attack when he visited the GA in the French Senate, listening to the debates in ENGLISH --the members of the MEP were the only people, except for the Irish Members of Parliament, the Pope and John Kennedy, to ever sit and speak in the Dáil Éireann, the Irish Parliament in 1996 and 2002 --the members of the MEP during the international conference at Stowe School (UK) in 1997 learned how to play cricket and drink tea --the members of MEP Stockholm in 1998 were received in the same Hall where the Nobel prize winners are received. They were invited to a dinner and took some silver forks and knives as a souvenir. (the precious antique silver forks and knives could be traced and given back to the rightful owner, the city of Stockholm) --the Prince of Asturias, the Crown Prince of Spain, received all the MEP participants of MEP Madrid 1998 in the Royal Palace, kissing each and every female delegate --the teambuilding in Vienna 2000 took place on a ship on the Danube, instructing all participants how to dance a Viennese Waltz for the farewell MEP Ball --the president of Portugal told all participants during a reception at the Presidential Palace in 2000, to walk around and take a good look also in drawers and cupboards --Slovenia organised already 3 international MEP sessions-in 2002, 2006 and 2012 --all directors/teachers enjoyed a sauna and a skinny dip into the ice cold Baltic See during MEP Finland in the first week of March 2003 --during a reception of the MEP in the Presidential Palace in Vilnius in 2006, the Lithuanian president Mr Adamkus said that he was not afraid of Russia and would fight this country with his bare hands if needs be --the president of Cyprus offered a wonderful barbecue and lots of champagne to the members of the Model European Parliament in the gardens of his palace in Nicosia --Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands enjoyed talking to the delegations of MEP The Hague in 2010 so much that she stayed much more time than originally planned --during the MEP session in spring 2013 (Norwich) all delegates were received in Westminster Palace by the speaker of the British parliament --all MEP sessions in all organising countries such as: Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, the FYROM and Turkey are the most special experience in the life of many young Europeans 39th MEP international conference in Vilnius will be unforgettable and the best of all! --the PROGRAMME Model European Parliament Lithuania November 30th – December 7th 2013 Programme Saturday 30th November Before 17 h 00 Arrival of MEP delegations in Vilnius Transportation will be provided to Mykolas Romeris University Ateities str. 20, Vilnius, LT – 08303 Refreshments will be available in the University for early arrivals Host families meet the delegates at the University. This has at times resulted in tensions between the EU and the CIS. How can such tensions be dealt with and should the EU strive for closer partnership with certain CIS countries? How can the danger of geopolitical conflict between the EU and the CIS be reduced? COMMITTEE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE The question of the involvement of the EU in armed international conflicts: Should the EU be willing to intervene by military means in international conflicts, or should the EU confine itself to reconstruction efforts after military hostilities have ended? COMMITTEE ON DEVELOPMENT The question of criteria for development aid and cooperation: To what extent should the human rights and political situation in developing countries influence EU policies with regard to aid and development cooperation? COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC AND MONETARY AFFAIRS The question of the present serious economic problems in a number of specific member states : What should the role of the EU be in bringing stability to the national economies of the member states and to what extent should member states support each other in times of economic / financial crisis? COMMITTEE ON EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS The question of growing unemployment among young people in the European Union: Increasingly unemployment, specifically amongst the younger generation, is becoming a serious problem within the European Union. What measures can the EU take to stimulate the participation of young people in the labour market – or should fighting unemployment be considered a national responsibility? COMMITTEE ON INDUSTRY, RESEARCH AND ENERGY The question of shale-fuels: Shale-gas and shale-oil reduce our dependence on energy suppliers from outside the EU, but there are certain risks involved. The EU needs a joint shale-strategy to be able to compete internationally. To what extent does this require EU-regulation, or is this national responsibility? Which measures should the EU take to safeguard the steady supply of acceptably clean energy for all member states? COMMITTEE ON CULTURE AND EDUCATION The question relating to education reflecting labour market demands: The European jobs market is seeing high levels of over qualified workers, under qualified workers and unemployed. What could change in education policy to help reverse this and create a workforce with the necessary skills for the future? COMMITTEE ON CIVIL LIBERTIES JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS (I) The question relating to immigration and achieving multi-ethnic societies: What is the EU doing at a multinational level to take responsibility for integration within member states? How does the EU protect the rights of minority groups and how far should EU member states accept cultural diversity when it conflicts with national cultural practices? COMMITTEE ON CIVIL LIBERTIES, JUSTICE AND HOME AFFAIRS (II) The question of safe Internet use: How can the EU ensure a safer Internet for its youth? What measures can be taken to reduce the impact of pornography, cyber-bullying and unregulated social networking sites on the life of young people without violating the right to free speech and freedom of information? COMMITTEE ON CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS The question of violation of the democratic principles of the EU: At the time of accession to the EU, criteria have to be met by candidate-members with regard to the quality of the democracy and rule of law in their country. How can/should the EU act when in individual member states the democratic principles of the Union are in danger of being violated by new national legislation or regulation? COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS The question of the role of the EU with regard to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS): Several CIS states have sought to develop closer relationships with the EU, not excluding the possibility of eventual membership of the European Union.
