STORY BE H IN D T H E FA R M
The ancient hills of the Smoky Mountains took on a sense of
grandeur in the 1930s as Florida and Dave Lasier built their dream
home nestled in the hills of West Millers Cove. En route from
Chicago to the Georgia coast, the Lasiers discovered the perfect
setting for their mountain estate. Story has it that while walking
the grounds to select the perfect spot to build their home,
Florida snagged her silk stockings in a bramble of blackberry
bushes and the name Blackberry Farm was born.
Over fifty years later, the Beall and Alexander families, along
with Mr. Baxter Lee, purchased land along the Cove to continue
the Lasiers’ dream of creating the perfect mountain retreat
surrounded by its own natural beauty. Blackberry Farm became
Beall’s home and labor of love in 1976. During Kreis’ and Sandy’s
years at Blackberry, Sandy commuted to Knoxville developing
the Ruby Tuesday restaurant concept while Kreis, along with fourmonth old Sam, created a charming six-room inn out of their
country home. Sam’s love for Blackberry began at an early age
as he watched his mother prepare and serve meals to Blackberry
Farm’s first guests. Decorating the inn with personal furnishings
and hand-picked antiques, Kreis personalized each room with
impeccable attention to detail and its own themed décor.
As the Bealls became sole owners of the Inn at Blackberry Farm
in 1991, the need for expansion took priority. Along with the
partnering families of the Haslams, Martins, and Alexanders, the
Bealls focused on acquiring and protecting land adjacent to the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Blackberry Farm has
been fortunate to maintain its natural splendor, untouched by
the outside world and still tied to the land.
With the need to accommodate a growing clientele, a guest
house and new dining room were added to the estate in 1991,
increasing Blackberry Farm’s lodging capacity from 9 bedrooms
to 29 bedrooms. With this addition completed, the doors
were opened to visitors 365 days a year for the first time in the
Inn’s history. In 1997, 16 luxurious country cottage suites were
nestled into the woods of the Holly Glade. In 2000, the 1870’s
Farmhouse was converted from guest accommodations into a
full-service Spa. The cozy charm of the house was meticulously
maintained to create a feeling of warmth and home as guests
walk through the doors.
The long-awaited completion of the FarmStead in 2007 brought
exciting changes to the property. Introducing the four Hill
Cottages and the three-bedroom Farmhouse—the most
luxurious accommodations in Blackberry’s history—as well as
The Barn, Larder, and Dairy, Blackberry Farm was on the cutting
edge as both a luxury resort and a functioning sustainable farm.
In August of 2007, the Singing Brook Cottages were completed,
adding seven cottages—each housing two suites—decorated
in contemporary furnishings and fabrics. Tucked away in the
woods of the Chilhowee Mountain Ridge, the addition of the
four-bedroom Mountain House in 2008 created a private haven
Membership INTRODUCTION
built with two balconies, an outdoor fireplace, and a 20-foot
waterfall. Today, the Bealls, along with the Haslams and Martins,
have expanded Blackberry Farm from 44 rooms to 62 rooms and
cottage suites, while still continuing to focus on acquiring and
protecting land in West Millers Cove.
In 2009, the Mountain Houses project began to take shape with
the first homes being built and the property welcoming new
private owners. Presenting an opportunity for private ownership
in the heart of the resort, the Mountain Houses sold out quickly.
In 2013, 176 acres neighboring Blackberry Farm on West Millers Cove
became available for purchase. The Beall family purchased the land
and a portion of this property known as Blackberry Farmside, was
made available for private ownership. Blackberry Farmside quickly
sold out, and is in the process of development and home building.
For more than 30 years, Blackberry Farm has welcomed guests
who share a passion for great food, wine, adventure, and good
living. Rated as one of the top resorts in North America for more
than a decade, Blackberry Farm continues to garner awards such
as in 2011 as the #1 Resort in North America by Travel & Leisure
Magazine and in 2012 as the #1 Resort for Service by Travel +
Leisure Magazine and Andrew Harper’s “#1 Food and Wine
Resort”, Featuring an annual Enrichment and Adventure Series
with the leading experts in their respective fields, as well as the
world-renowned Food and Wine program showcasing the world’s
finest culinary minds, vintners and importers, Blackberry Farm’s
events have become legendary for their unrivaled gatherings. The
Barn, celebrating its grand opening in September of 2007, features
a state-of-the-art Demonstration Kitchen and is the center stage
for Blackberry’s Food and Wine program. This culinary center
anchors the remaining FarmStead buildings: a cluster of classic farm
structures, amongst them a luxuriously re-imagined Farmhouse
and the Larder, Blackberry’s creamery, butcher shop and jammery,
producing some of the world’s finest sheepsmilk cheese, jams,
charcuteries, jellies, and related farm preserves.
The Blackberry Team is committed to the tradition of making
great memories for our guests by providing each individual with
extraordinary personal service, the finest culinary experiences,
and unparalleled accommodations.
Blackberry Farm is a member of the prestigious Relais and
Chateaux Association, which is comprised of elite, independently
owned international hotels and restaurants. The hallmark of
Relais and Chateaux properties are their embodiment of the five
“C’s”—Character, Courtesy, Calm, Charm, and Cuisine. In 2005,
the restaurant at Blackberry Farm was awarded the prestigious
designation of Relais Gourmand. The Relais and Chateaux
organization selects properties for membership which are unique
and exhibit a passion for the art of living and believe in quality,
refinement, and a sense of the exceptional.

Adventure HIKING
GEOCACHING
Romance and adventure unite in the antique tradition of Letterboxing, an activity that began during the 1850s in Dartmoor,
County Devon, England. Travelers hiking the English moors
would leave postcards in hidden boxes along the trails. The
next person to discover the cache would then post the letters,
hence the name “Letterboxing.” Letterboxing has elements of a
treasure hunt and was a forerunner of the contemporary sport
of geocaching, which uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to
find specific locations of hidden objects.
The modern version of Letterboxing utilizes log books and
rubber stamps—which are often beautifully handmade—instead of postcards. Our Letterboxing adventure is guided
through sets of geocache coordinates and should take less
than two hours to complete. Supplied with a Letterboxing kit
and a GPS unit, you can set out on foot, bike or by golf cart
to discover the hidden caches on our own misty hillsides. You
will be rewarded for your efforts by the fresh cool mountain
air, time spent with your loved one and a special treat awaiting you in our Gift Shop upon your return.

Outdoorsman ON PROPERTY FISHING
FLY-FISHING
Blackberry Farm became an Orvis-endorsed fishing lodge in
2001, and we are very proud of our association with Orvis and
its group of endorsed lodges. We are especially proud to be recognized as the 2003 and 2004 Orvis-endorsed Lodge of the Year.
Blackberry Farm is the first lodge in the eastern United States to
win this prestigious honor, and we look forward to offering our
guests the finest possible fly-fishing experience in the future.
Guests have access to a buffet of options for freshwater fly-fishing: two
ponds and a stream on our property, more than 700 miles of fishable
trout streams in the neighboring Great Smoky Mountains National
Park and beautiful stretches of the well-known Clinch or Holston Rivers. Our Orvis-endorsed guides and instructors can quickly introduce
beginners to the basics of fly-fishing or help the seasoned angler by
providing the best local knowledge for a perfect day on the water.
O RV I S - E N D O R S E D LO D G E
The Orvis Company, America’s oldest continuous mail order company
(since 1856), began its Endorsed Lodge Program almost 20 years ago.
Its goal was to assure their customers that they could expect the finest
combination of accommodations, fishing and shooting at these lodges
because they met the Orvis Company’s approval. Today there are approximately 60 Orvis-endorsed lodges in the United States and Canada.
HESSE CREEK
Blackberry Farm is home to what may be the best mile of trout
water in Tennessee. Beneath a canopy of trees, Hesse Creek harbors
rainbow and brown trout ranging from eight inches to eight pounds.
This jewel of a mountain stream is best fished in the Spring and Fall,
but thanks to our mild weather and water temperatures, Hesse Creek
can produce better-than-average fishing in the Summer, but especially in the Winter. Hesse Creek is a catch-and-release stream, and
only fly-fishing with artificial flies is permitted. The stream is reserved
for guided trips year-round, unless special arrangements are made.
OTHER OPTIONS ON PROPERT Y
Two ponds grace our grounds and accommodate anglers in pursuit
of more casting freedom of different species. The larger Walland Pond
contains bass, catfish and bream. The smaller Singing Brook Pond,
which is home to trout in the Winter and bass and blue gill all year
long, is situated near the Grey Drake, the fishing cabin that is home to
our fly-fishing schools, fly tying classes and private instruction.

Outdoorsman OFF PROPERTY FISHING
S M O K Y M O U N TA I N S
A sportsman’s paradise, the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park adjoins Blackberry Farm. Its superb fishing destinations are
within easy reach and are bountiful in Spring and Fall. The park
contains more than 700 miles of fishable water and is truly a rare
wild trout sanctuary—none of the streams are stocked. While
rainbows and browns populate most of the major streams, the
native Southern Appalachian brook trout still thrives in some
of the elevated tributaries. Guests can drive to these waters in
about 15–45 minutes. Half and full day guided trips are available.
F LOAT T R I P S
A tail water fishery north of Knoxville, the wide and pristine
Clinch River is replete with trout. Blackberry guests can float
down in a Mackenzie-style drift boat, catching browns, rainbows and brooks (this river produced Tennessee’s state record
brown trout). The Clinch can be rewarding year-round, but the
best fishing is in March through June and October through
early November. The driving distance and length of the float
make the Clinch River a full day trip only.
We also guide the Holston River, a Springtime favorite, located just
East of Knoxville. The Holston is a diverse and scenic float that offers and angler a chance to fish several different types of water. The
river hosts a robust population of rainbow trout, but we often pursue small mouth bass in the warmer months. The Holston fishes
best for trout from March through June and is a full-day trip only.

Outdoorsman ARCHERY
ARCHERY
Archery is an ancient tradition and for centuries it reigned as
a critical piece of survival, from putting food on the table to
battle and warfare. Today, this Zen pursuit captivates all who
pick up the “stick and string” because of the truth behind each
shot, the lesson it provides to each person, and the essential
connection to our past. Be it target archery or the stalking of
wild game the mental toughness and focus remain the same;
to be the arrow and deliver a strike to the heart of the target
requires both strength of mind and will. Join us while we use
these antiquated tools to further shape ourselves.
Blackberry Farm has a sheltered flat range that can be used in
all seasons and weather. Located on top of a secluded hill at
the Smoky Mountain Sports Club, a thirty minute drive off-site
to our shooting complex, the serene setting begs the archer to
step back in time and enjoy the peacefulness of nature while using the most basic of archery tools, the longbow. Longbows are
the essence of “form follows function” and you’ll experience the
beauty of true simplicity. While you’re soaking all this in you
will also learn the basic fundamentals of instinctive shooting as
well as discover the in depth philosophy entwined within the
sport. You might even learn a little about yourself.
Ninety Minute Session

These foothills have long held the secrets of distillers and brewers that fought against the elements to create a comforting beverage. In our quest to share the ingredients, wisdom, and ways
of the area with our guests from all around the world as well as
to build upon a beverage program that our guests and experts
alike have come to know as one of the most comprehensive
wine and unique beverage collections in this country, we knew
we simply could not leave out a very important part of life in
these hills and on this farm — whiskey making. The first step
to making whiskey is actually making beer. Having a brewery
on our property allows our guests direct interaction with the
process and brewers, the team to make the most of the beer
pairings and the by-products of the beer making process.
The tour is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4:00 p.m.
