Sierra Noble
Possibilities
RESELL
Best known as a fiddle virtuoso who breezes through Celtic, Bluegrass, Jazz,
World beat and other styles of music with stunning ease, Sierra's breadth of
experience is impressive. Since the age of 7, Sierra has been a student of
classical music as well as being immersed by the traditional tunes of the Métis.
Her talent has taken her around the world where she has visited countries in Asia,
Europe and North America. She amazes audiences with compelling contemporary
performances which feature exceptional instrumentals, energetic step-dancing
and her infectious down to earth charm.
Attracting the attention of notable and diverse Canadian artists across the country,
like Bruce Cockburn, Tom Cochrane, and Hawksley Workman, not to mention
a team of noted music professionals, like her managers Sheri Jones and Wayne
O’Connor (Gordie Sampson, Shaye, Joel Plaskett) and her booking agent,
Richard Mills (SL Feldman & Associates), Sierra’s career has been building with
a solid foundation to poise her as a Canadian mainstay.
With a new EP to her credit, aptly named Possibilities, Sierra's journey as a
singer-songwriter is off to a promising start. Her voice is a study in gorgeous
contradictions - wonderfully pure yet layered with subtle, smoky tones. Her songs
speak of universal themes of love, longing and discovery wrapped in infectious
melodies and delivered with sincerity and conviction. Audiences will be delighted
to know that Sierra does not abandon her first love on this disc – it also features
two instrumentals - including a compelling duet with special guest Ashley
MacIsaac. She has created an atmosphere where stunning instrumentals and
hook laden pop songs exist in perfect harmony.
Produced by Bill Bell (Justin Nozuka, Shaye, Tom Cochrane) and recorded in
Toronto, Possibilities features some of Canada's finest musicians including Kevin
Breit, Davide Direnzo and Kevin Fox.

Press Quotes
"On her new six-track EP Possibilities, Noble sings with a heavenly sweet yet confident
voice comparable to the likes of Norah Jones or Colbie Caillat. The songs are tasteful,
somewhat understated pop, accented by Noble's string work, which adds even more
warmth and dignity to her already polished, mature delivery…When it comes to a world
class career in music for Sierra Noble, this EP confirms the possibilities are endless."
- Bruce Laperre, Winnipeg Free Press

The Mike Plume Band have been rocking Canada and the US since the late 1990s and these beloved Albertans (though Mike is
originally a Maritimer) have reunited to give us another chance to hear their unique breed of road-trip worthy eclectic folk/rock.
“Lead Singer Mike Plume’s raspy powerhouse vocals, skilled guitar licks and subtle harmonica make you remember what real
music sounded like in the days of Dylan. Pure, sharp harmonies exploded like hard liquor and honey in a boiling pot. Driving
rhythms, ass-shaking melodies, these guys make you feel like a desert fantasy; a big long convertible, a fast getaway from a bar
room brawl or a liquor store hold up. In between, there were a handful of acoustic ballads by Mike Plume that put the room in a
trance and under a spell; thoughtful and soul stirring, going deep and fast to the heart of the matter. These guys play with
unadultered dedication, talent and heart. Their showmanship is personable, non-assuming, and hilarious at times.” - excerpt

Like many gospel and R&B singers, Naomi Davis Shelton learned to sing at an early age in the church
where she was baptized. Her parents were dedicated, involved members of Mt. Coiny Baptist Church
in Mitwee, AL. By age six, she was singing in church alongside her two older sisters. Naomi got a
gig as the house singer at a little club called the Night Cap on Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn. It was there
where she would meet the man who would become her producer, mentor, and friend for life.
Cliff Driver and his band were just off the road backing Baby Washington as part of the James Brown
Revue, and had taken a job as the house band at the Night Cap. It would be a number of years
before they would meet up again, but Cliff took an instant liking to Naomi’s voice. “I liked her cause
she had a different type voice – a raspy sound like Mavis Staples.”
Cliff played with Charley Moore & the Honkytonks, the Nightcats, and lead his own show as Cliff
Driver and his Band. He cut records anonymously behind vocal groups like the Devours and the
Hearts, and put out his own instrumentals: ‘Juicy Fruit’, ‘Crazy Hot’, ‘Drive On’, ‘Driver’s Roll’.
Around this time, a promoter named Bobby Robertson put out an instrumental called ‘Soul Train’ by a
group called the Ramrods. The record was a hit and would later become the theme for a TV show by
the same name. Cliff was recruited along with saxophonist King Curtis and guitarist Jimmy Spool to
play the Apollo and later put the act on the road. Though the original band broke up after only a few
gigs, Cliff took over the Ramrods and continued to do club dates and record sides with them for a few
more years.
In 1999, Cliff and Naomi were doing a club set with legendary James Brown bassist Fred Thomas at
Flannery’s on 14th St. in Manhattan, when then Desco Records label man Gabriel Roth approached
them about doing a recording. Naomi and Cliff cut ‘41st Street Breakdown’, credited on the 45’ as
Naomi Davis and the Knights of Forty First Street. The record made some noise on the then budding
Deep Funk scene, getting heavy rotation at overseas funk parties. A second session produced an
unreleased 10” containing ‘Wind Your Clock’ and ‘Talking ‘Bout A Good Thing’,
Over the next few years, Roth formed and developed Daptone Records with partner and saxophonist
Neal Sugarman. It took three sets of sessions over three years before Roth and Driver finally found
the right combination of singers, songs, and musicians to cut Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens’
full length. The final result, What Have You Done, My Brother? is a testament to the singular sound of
gospel and soul music.

With roots in the Balkans, Goran Bregovic
marries sounds of a be-devilled gypsy brass
band with traditional Balkan polyphonies, those of
an electric guitar and traditional percussion, with
a curious rock accent… creating music that our
soul recognizes instinctively and the body greets
with an irresistible urge to dance.
Goran is one of the most internationally
renowned modern composers of the Balkans and
his works also enjoy considerable demand in the
film world. A host of films that he has scored
have been nominated for Best Foreign Film
Oscars, Cesar Awards and Cannes Film
Festival’s Palm D’or’s.
Alkohol is the first time a Goran Bregovic album
has been released in North America. The title is
inspired by an annual contest of brass bands and
drinking in Guca, Serbia. Goran describes the
album as two chapters; songs that are meant to
be listened and danced to and accompanied by
strong drinks and the second chapter being more
complex, including a brass band, concerto violin
and six male voices and a small chamber
orchestra.
KEY SELLING POINTS:

The Rainbow Nation, sadly has few rainbow bands. Political
segregation may have ended in 1994, but culturally, separation
rules. However Freshly Ground transcend this, striking a chord
with everyone from infants to pensioners, regardless of colour or
class. Freshly Ground formed in Cape Town in 2002. A
collaboration of South African, Mozambique and Zimbabwean
musicians who show influences of their countrys traditional
rhythms but also with influences of blues, jazz, and rock.
Their subsequent releases made them popular enough to play
alongside legends such as Miriam Makeba, Femi Kuti and
Stanley Clarke. For each of the 7 members of Freshly Ground,
this band is about more than music. From each of their
backgrounds comes a unique version of ‘being African.’ After
their second album went double platinum they gained enough
international attention to secure a deal to distribute their albums
to Europe and North America. Freshly Ground’s new album
Ma’Cheri delivers the goods on many levels.

Brains All Over The Streets
In these lean times of global turmoil the hip-hop
community must ask itself whether or not it is
willing to step up to the plate and address
issues through music and activism that are of
importance to all of us. At Guerrilla Funk, we
are, and there is no better representative of this
commitment than T-K.A.S.H. As a hip-hop
artist, radio personality and community activist,
he is a part of movement to merge socially
responsible messages with music that engages
and stands the test of time.
He first introduced his style on his stellar Parisproduced debut, Turf War Syndrome, after
leaving fellow revolutionary music stalwarts
The Coup to join the Guerrilla Funk family of
artists. Now he returns with his most inspired
collection to date, touching on various social
and political issues in this new post-Bush
climate. Hard Truth Soldier to the fullest.

BROTHERHOOD
BLACKBURN is a band of
three brothers whose music
is rich in the tradition of
the blues, while inflected
with R&B and soul and is
electrified with an urban vibe.
BLACKBURN brings it all
together with conscious lyrics
to create a smooth and soulful
groove. The four member

a seminal figure of Toronto’s
Blues and R&B scene in the
60s – coupled with their
evident talents and vast
experience, it’s no wonder that
they were the sensation at this

listeners are quickly drawn
in by their natural, infectious
in-the-pocket groove.

Anderson, to name a few.

During the spring of 2007 we decided to write and arrange
the songs for our second record Everyone All At Once in
isolation. We drove away from our select cities, A.D.D.
distractions, relationships, and most importantly any escape
from making music. We brought food, clothes, alcohol, and
a van full of instruments. We woke to a lake, a forest, two
cozy buildings, and a room full of instruments. We wrote

embraced urban isolation, knowing that we were working
on the music that would capture the sound we had been

rehearsal regime we returned to Catherine North Studios
with Dan Achen (City and Colour) to record our planned

expands on what we had originally intended to achieve.

“Drumbo” is the highly anticipated debut album from
Saskatchewan’s two most prolific hip-hop artists —
Regina rapper, Def 3, and Saskatoon’s super producer,
Factor. Factor showcases a unique ability to adapt his
music to all styles of artists, as heard in his collaborations
with some of Hip-Hop’s major players — commercial and
underground — with the likes of Xzibit, Aesop Rock, The
Alkaholiks, Myka 9, Awol One, and many more. Once again
he provides the perfect backdrop for up-and-coming
Canadian rapper Def 3 ’s seamlessly smooth and
charismatic presence on the mic.
From the beats to the rhymes, this debut album comes to
life through a wide variety of musical styles and rhythms.
With contagious choruses, complex flows and effortless
delivery, this album has it all. Boasting diverse features
from Vancouver Hip-Hop veteran Moka Only, Sunspot Jonz
of the LA underground super group, The Living Legends,
and fellow Saskatchewan country, folk & funk singers
Val Halla and Thomas Roussin.
The connection between these two artist’s original sounds
creates an explosive chemistry throughout the album that
is sure to catch the ear of all hip-hop music fans around
the globe.

Electric Owls is the name of the new project
featuring the brilliant songs of Andy Herod,
better known as the frontman for indie
stalwarts, The Comas. While The Comas
future is in limbo, Andy decided to get these
new songs off his chest through a new outlet.
The result is ten beautifully crafted songs.
They’re simple, catchy, honest songs with
Andy’s soothing vocals washing over the
listener song after song.
There’s a little
something for everyone in these songs… a
little pop, a little country twang, and a little

Yoshida Brothers, Japan’s young masters of
the ancient tsugaro-shamisen, are back with a
new album, Prism. The aptly-named release
reflects their long-standing commitment to
traditional Japanese folk music, refracted
through
modern
musical
sensibilities,
incorporating elements of pop, rock and world
music sounds. On Prism, the Yoshida Brothers
have collaborated with some notable talents,
such as Southern Californian singer-songwriter
Jesca Hoop, who wrote the Celtic-tinged “One
Long River” and David Baerwald, the singersongwriter who provided the whimsical track
“Mr. Nagano’s Foolish Proposal.”
And
“Summer Day” marks a re-team with
keyboardist and producer Mitchell Froom
(writer of the Yoshida Brothers’ “Hit Song”) with
additional songwriting contributions from
drummer Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos, Edie
Brickell) and Phantom Planet vocalist Alex
Greenwald.
These album stand-outs fit
comfortably
alongside
more
traditional
examples of Japanese folk like “Hu Jin” and
“Aiya,” plus the Brothers’ inspired cover of “The
National Anthem” from Radiohead’s Kid A.
KEY SELLING POINTS:
- The albums final track “End of the World” was featured on the soundtrack to
the Mark Wahlberg / Joaquin Phoenix film, We Own The Night, further
enhancing the Yoshida Brothers’ profile in America.
- Prism is evidence that the Yoshida Brothers continue to push boundaries in
their pursuit of musical exploration, constantly redefining the sound of the
shamisen and how it can be fused into new, unique soundscapes.

After appearing on two of rap’s more accomplished and entertaining
releases, Brand Nubian’s 1990 debut “One For All” and his own 1992
solo effort “Reel To Reel” Grand Puba took a short leave of absence
from the hip hop scene. Three years later he resurfaced, freestyling
first in a Sprite commercial and then with this long-overdue second
solo effort, “2000.” Puba carried those first two records on the
inventiveness of his rhyme style – a little Slick Rick swagger, some Biz
Markie pop culture referencing and tone deaf singing, and a lot of
Puba’s own distinctive whine and boast. On “2000,” Puba recaptures
all of that and sounds like he’s never been away. As before, he packs
scores of name drops and song snatches in between his own selfaggrandizing hyperbole and earns more than a few chuckles for the
effort. Also tried-and-true Puba, the tracks on “2000” favour a heavy
bounce and melodic soul groove over the more raw and rhythmic funk
backings of most rappers – which means there’s more music and fatter
hooks than usual. Another difference from his previous work is the
lack of pseudo-Islamic race theories that have occasionally popped up
in his lyrics.

Traffic Entertainment presents The Memphis Sounds “Ike’s
Moods,” an all-instrumental collection of Isaac Hayes’ most wellknown songs. In a similar vein as the “Ultimate Breaks & Beats
Instrumentals” album, “Ike’s Moods” takes the best from Isaac
Hayes’ catalog and transforms them into instrumental gems. Just
as Hayes defined funk and soul in the 60’s and 70’s, the members
of The Memphis Sound have carved out their own unique
contemporary sound that not only attracts a younger generation to
the genres, but also pleases fans of the sounds since their
inception. Consisting of members from El Michele Affair, The
Dap Kings, and Anti Balas, these instrumentalists have been part
of a movement of neo-wave funk and soul musicians, redefining
the sound through projects with Mark Ronson and Amy
Winehouse; reworking classic instrumentals for the Wu-Tang
Clan; and other various live and studio recorded projects. This
album aptly pays homage to the many moods and musical
stylings of Hayes. Passing away in August 2008, Hayes left
behind quite the extensive musical career. Help celebrate the
career of this American Music icon with “Ike’s Moods”

Started as a response to the current apolitical
climate in commercial music, the Hard Truth
Soldiers compilation series is a rallying cry for
social justice. Each volume is a collection of
material that goes against the grain of
commercial hip-pop by providing content of
substance, touching on subjects ranging from
war and police brutality to black on black crime
and domestic violence.
With the recent reduction of civil liberties,
increased instances of injustice and racism
everywhere, and a rise of self-censoring
corporate media monopolies hell-bent on
stifling dissent and flooding our communities
with negative and escapist entertainment, it’s
ironic that this is the most prolific period of
protest song-writing in history.

Kanye West, one of the most innovative and influential artists walking God’s green earth, has a knack for shaping an
idea and turning it into a classic record. His pal, legendary spoken word artist Malik Yusef, has a talent for putting
cohesive thoughts together in a powerful manner all without the assistance of music. Put these two icons together and
the results are earth shattering. On Kanye West & Malik Yusef Present G.O.O.D. Morning, G.O.O.D. Night (G.O.O.D.
Music’s first and only officially independent release to date), there are 24 heartfelt compositions hand picked by the Louis
Vuitton Don with each composition reflecting a different hour in the life of Malik Yusef. Throughout Dusk, part one of the
two-disc collection, the spoken word artist shares the first half of his day with prime cuts such as “Patiently,” “Elevated”
and “Promiseland” featuring Kanye and Adam Levine of Maroon 5. Also featuring collaborations with Devin The Dude,
Bun B and KRS-One, Dusk is a G.O.O.D. way to start the day.

Hopewell has never been a band too concerned with classification. For more than a decade, they have been at turns ornate,
primitive, fired up, lashing out, beautiful, burly, blue, white hot, sardonic and sweet. And through an impressive amalgam of
talent and a knack for twisting the component parts of the rock era’s most inventive music, they have concocted studio works that
evade easy description and sink hooks in grey matter few other bands find. Their latest Tee Pee release, Good Good Desperation,
still tweaks ears and flies defiantly in the face of formula. But this is a more elemental Hopewell too – a band capturing the burning
light and ecstatic fury of their live set in the studio and adorning that beast with out-of-the-ether blasts of cityscape sounds,
hypnotic rhythmic breakdowns, and harmonies as tight, arresting and jarring as a mutant, post-nuclear CSNY. For any listener
who has tracked the arc of Hopewell’s output, their arrival at this particular convergence of studio/song architecture and leadheavy rocking, makes perfect freaking sense. Their first three LPs were beautiful sonic traffic jams that spanned the psych-glam
of Ziggy Stardust Bowie and Janes Addiction, tattered, heartworn, heavy mountain jams, and a mad scientist’s approach to
production that evoked images of Dr. Frankenstein and George Martin playing 3-D Chinese checkers in the depths of Abbey Road.
The resulting records, Hopewell & The Birds Of Appetite and Beautiful Targets, were delicious blends of primal, driving rhythms,
long-horizon Spector strings, and songs that veered headlong into the Technicolor forest just as you thought you were about to park
the car for the night. John Peel himself took note, gave them a session of their own, and the perky-eared English press took notice
too. They hit the road and played with just about everybody – most recently (and heroically) opening for the hyperdecibled hydra
My Bloody Valentine. Yes, Hopewell is a chameleon of the most sincere, beautiful and rocking sort. And Good Good Desperation
– the sum of a decade-long exploration swirled through a funnel cloud of Atom Heart Mother, Ege Bamyasi, Odyssey And Oracle
and Nothing’s Shocking, and broadcast through a mind meld of five remarkable musicians – is an album of head music that
will keep your own shape-shifting mind wandering, shaking and shimmying long after that first sonic swat upside the head.

Time isn’t constant or concrete. It’s made of color and shade. Time flows, blurs and fades away in dim morning
light. Time melts. And The Warlocks are the ecstatic, hazy, foreboding, holy tick tock of time that isn’t anything
at all. For five albums, The Warlocks have lived in between and beyond minutes and hours. Sway to The Warlocks
live and loud and songs will drift and envelop each other like fog. Listen to the records and you’ll hear soundtracks
to fuzz-freaked, bacchanalian stomps, pre-dawn city prowls, sleeping late with new crushes, and the elation and
exhaustion that wash in and recede deep in the wee hours. The Warlocks new LP The Mirror Explodes speaks
and whispers from all of these places. But where the band’s last long player, Heavy Deavy Skull Lover, tweaked
time in a icy-cool, white-noise swirl that evoked a decadent lysergic night, this effort is disorientation through
a longer lens – pictures of luck, longing, losing, moods and fever dreams scrambled in the haze of near and
distant memory. On the eight songs of The Mirror Explodes, the band’s signature amalgam of White Light/
White Heat attack, space panoramas, fuzz, melancholy, and melody is present and potent. But there is vivid
focus too. Throbbing bass lines, distant rolling thunder drums, and zombie rattlesnake shake are a heartbeat
of strange, ominous vitality. Guitars howl, slash and bounce like light. Bobby Hecksher’s vocals sound oddly
alone and unsettlingly intimate all at once. And just when you think you understand the sum of these sonic
elements, they become something else entirely…
