IPSF ANNUAL REPORT 2009-2010 Times have changed since most of us were in school. State support d w i n d l e s b y t h e d a y. I f w e want our kids to have the education they deserve, the only people we can depend on are ourselves. Parents. B u s i n e s s . T h e c o m m u n i t y. I P S F. A l l o f u s j o i n e d together in a circle of support. Since 1996, IPSF has existed for one reason: To make sure our children get a world-class education. This IPSF Annual Report will give you a picture of what you have helped us accomplish, where your donations go, and the good things they’ve made possible. We also want to celebrate and thank the parents, community members, alumni, businesses, corporations and associations who come together in support of excellence in education. We are truly fortunate to live in a community that values education so highly. This past year, your donation helped us pay the salaries of instructional assistants, who in turn give elementary teachers the flexibility to organize their classrooms into small reading groups that encourage every type of reader, and instill a love of reading that lasts a lifetime. The City of Irvine matched those gifts, showing their commitment to the education of their residents. Fine Arts education is thriving in Irvine thanks to you. Your donation helped IPSF provide after-school and summer enrichment classes, as well as our award-winning Instrument Rental Program and Honors Concert. With your help, IPSF was able to fund Zero Period PE in our middle schools, to allow students the flexibility to take an extra elective. To explore. To discover that new passion that will make a difference in their lives. As you read this report, you’ll learn more about what our community has made possible– what YOU have made possible– in support of education. Today, as state budgets continue to shrink, your support is more important than ever. Critical, in fact, if we are to ensure our children have the tools they need to be competitive and to excel, whatever their chosen field. Our goal at IPSF is simple: to be here now, and into the future, supporting enrichment opportunities you simply can’t find anywhere else. For every child. For your child. With gratitude, Neda Zaengle, IPSF CEO BOARD OF TRUSTEES, ADVISORY COUNCIL AND STAFF Before we go on to break down the numbers, it’s only fitting that we present you with some of our greatest assets: The people who make IPSF what it is. Some of our staff receive salaries. The rest volunteer their time, for our benefit. And yours. As state resources shrink, our contribution to our own schools grows. It is clear to us that local revenue, and the local control it allows, will be critical to the future success of our students and our schools. WHERE THE MONEY GOES ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS that improve the quality of education IPSF, working in partnership with IUSD, runs enrichment programs that add immeasurably to the choices students have at all levels, from K-12. These programs are partly funded by donations, and partly through classroom fees. In this way, IPSF is able to make programs available that otherwise would simply not exist. Support for the Honors Concert, the Program to Advance Cultural Education (PACE), Walk to School Day and other community outreach programs Support for Science Little League, Summer Enrichment Academy and Zero-Period PE Support for the Instrument Rental Program Support for ACE and My College Knowledge. TOTAL: $1,708,362 in programs that enrich students’ lives. Programs no school district should be without. IUSD AT A GLANCE Over 10,000 of our students (roughly 39%) have a primary language other than English. More than 3,900 students (about 14.5%) are limited in their English proficiency. ACADEMIC SUPPORT BENEFITTING 27,000 STUDENTS IPSF plays a greater role today than at any time in our history. As state resources continue to shrink, the need for IPSF grows. Some of the things we must pay for would shock you: Nurses and health clerks, for example. All the more reason for every parent, every family, to give as generously as they can. middle & high school SUPPORT, $165,802 (16%) IPSF helps fund Language and College Planning classes, Innovative Teacher and Counselor grants, the Parent Volunteer of the Year program, as well as initiatives that help your child handle middle and high school better, including Freshman Success programs, Grad Night and Summer Enrichment Academy. SCIENCE, MATH, TECHNOLOGY, RECYCLING, $27,682 (3%) IPSF supports the IUSD Science Fair, Technology, Math, and the IUSD Recycling program. Each of them, a way to encourage young minds to make a difference– and have the tools to do it. District music and art, $26,196 (2%) Studies have shown students who participate in the arts outperform those who don’t, on virtually every measure. IPSF supports music and art, with events like the Annual Honors Concert and the Young Masters Art Program. By showcasing students in a public setting, IPSF also helps instill in them the confidence they need to excel. WHERE THE MONEY GOES ACADEMIC SUPPORT NURSES AND HEALTH CLERKS, $144,000 (14%) From skinned knees to daily medications, nurses and health clerks are there for all 27,000 IUSD students only because IPSF funds them. Would you feel good about a school without them? We didn’t think so. ELEMENTARY LEVEL SUPPORT, $185,165 (18%) From kindergarten through sixth grade, IPSF makes a difference. Your contributions to IPSF help fund the Health Curriculum, Music Instructional Assistants, Math Fluency, Afterschool Classroom Enrichment, Innovative Teacher and Counselor grants, the Summer Enrichment Academy, the Parent Portal and the Parent Volunteer of the Year program. All to help make sure your child gets the education he or she deserves. Support for the Instrument Rental Program CLASSROOM SUPPORT, $500,000 (48%) IPSF supports every IUSD school. Grades K-6 receive additional instructional support, while grades 7-12 get better student-to-teacher ratios. In 2009-10, IPSF funded 930 hours of additional classroom instruction in K-6, and 10 additional certified teachers in grades 7-12. TOTAL: $1,048,845 in academic support the state can’t pay for, won’t pay for, or will pay for only in part. IRVINE UNIFIED AT A GLANCE Elementary 22 Number of Schools Student Enrollment Elementary 13,934 Middle 5 Middle 4,168 High 4 High 8,740 Alternative 2 Special Education 2,676 Title One 15 INNOVATION YOUR D O N AT I O N S AT W O R K IN THE CLASSROOM RECOGNIZING AND REWARDING CUTTING-EDGE TEACHERS Great ideas and innovative techniques can take education to the next level. Few things are worse than to see them ground under the heels of budget constraints. Enter ITAP/ICAP, the Innovative Teaching Award Program and the Innovative Counseling Award Program. Teachers and Counselors present their ideas for specific projects and, with the support of our community partners, we help find the money. INNOVATIVE USES OF TECHNOLOGY such as webcams, camcorders, mini laptops, document cameras, high-end design software and Mimios, a system that converts a white board into an interactive medium. Irvine teachers at all levels– elementary through high school– are coming up with cutting edge ways to use technology in teaching, in counseling and in communication between the school and the home. Your child benefits. ELEMENTARY PROJECTS THAT HELP YOUR CHILD READ BETTER Guided reading materials, literature circles. sight-based reading materials, plus new library books of various levels and content. All to help improve reading proficiency, fluency and comprehension. Not to mention helping to develop a lifelong love of reading. ELEMENTARY PROJECTS THAT HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN MATH Manipulatives, like the ones you see here, help kids get a true grasp of complex concepts like decimals and fractions. They also help give kids who think they can’t do math the confidence to succeed. It all adds up. MUSIC MATTERS. Music is a bedrock of a world-class education. Not simply an understanding and appreciation of it, nor even learning an instrument and performing. Simple exposure to music in a classroom setting has been shown to pay dividends in higher test scores as your child progresses from grade to grade. ITAP grants have gone to support music-based projects in both elementary and middle school. A GREENER TOMORROW We don’t own the planet. We borrow it from our kids. This middle school project helps kids take their future into their own hands and participate in an ecology challenge, encouraging them to create community solutions to environmental problems. COMMUNITY SEMINAR Challenge Day is a school-wide workshop for 10th–12th graders, focusing on community-building and leadership. Community is one reason why our schools continue to be so strong, despite the challenges. Communitybuilding is a skill that can be passed along, and we’re happy to support it. DRAWING ON YOUR CHILD’S CREATIVITY The Artists/Writers Workshop is a 4th grade program that teaches writing through art. Our grant paid for teacher training materials, art supplies and picture books. In 2009-2010, IPSF awarded ITAP/ICAP grants for 17 different projects. Key donors included PATS (Parents Appreciating Teachers and Staff), the Allergan Foundation, the Exchange Club of Irvine and the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club. For a complete list of ITAP/ICAP grants and projects, visit www.ipsf.net. TOTAL: $34,823 for innovative ideas and the resources to bring them to life. Honor Roll, 2009-2010 Over the next several pages are the names of 1,298 individuals whose donations helped make it possible for IPSF to support our schools. Naturally enough, most are parents. But you’ll also see teachers, administrators and alumni, even a student or two. We’ll be honest: The list is nowhere near as long as we’d like it to be, or as long as our 27,000 students need it to be. But we believe, in time, that will come. CALIFORNIA, A N D T H E S TAT E O F E D U C AT I O N. The short answer first: We ask because it’s the only way we can give your child a first-rate education. The longer answer is a bit more complicated. By law, all property taxes go into a common pool, which is then doled out to schools according to several arcane formulas. As California’s budget woes have worsened, this pool has proved all too tempting for our legislators, who’ve dipped into it, time and time again, to make up for shortfalls elsewhere. Every year, they dip deeper, leaving our schools less and less to work with. To keep our schools great– and standards high– we have only one option: To turn to you. NOTABLE ALUMNI: MUSIC j ere m y siskin d A school district isn’t simply known for the company it keeps, but for the graduates it produces. To our way of thinking, every child has the potential to achieve great things. Here, then, are a few who have done just that, starting with Irvine High School grad Jeremy Siskind. Jazz legend Marian McPartland calls Jeremy “a remarkable young pianist and rising star in the jazz world.” Born and raised in Irvine, Jeremy is a 2004 graduate of Irvine High School. He won a scholarship to the Eastman School of Music where he became a pianist for the famed Eastman Jazz. He holds a Master’s in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. As an Irvine student, he participated in many competitions, which he credits as helping him prepare for world-class venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and Orchard Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Siskind has already made his mark on the Big Apple jazz scene, recording with Chris Potter, Marcus Printup, and Chris Lightcap, and gigging at clubs like Iridium, Fat Cat, Small’s, and the Jazz Gallery. He’s also one of five finalists nationwide for the American Pianist Association’s $50,000 Cole Porter Fellowship this spring. In 2005, Siskind created an Artist-inResidency program at Irvine High School. Every year, he brings a group of musicians to work with, perform with, and inspire the school’s jazz bands. Now, we know one of the stars. Born in Tehran, Iran, Nasim Pedrad, part of the SNL cast, was raised in Irvine and attended Westpark Elementary and Rancho Middle School. In 1999, she graduated from University High School and continued on to UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film and Television. Nasim has written and performed sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade, The Groundlings and Improv Olympic, and has received an LA Weekly “Best Comedic Performance of the Year” Award as the lead in the comedic spoof “After School Special.” In addition to co-star appearances in “Gilmore Girls” and “ER,” Nasim Pedrad’s first one-woman show “Me, Myself & Iran” debuted at the UCB, and was selected for the 2007 HBO Comedy Festival in Las Vegas. Nasim has also appeared in the sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” NOTABLE ALUMNI: SCIENCE DR. RICHARD BAICK Dr. Richard Baick is a native of Irvine. He attended Turtle Rock Elementary, Rancho Middle School and graduated from University High School in 1984. Following his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, he attended the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, graduating in 1995. He completed his Residency in Family Medicine at Lutheran General Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Baick says, “I could not have achieved my dreams without the love and support of my parents, Dr. and Mrs. Choong Baick. I could not have reached my goals without the finest education in America.” It’s not every day that a student gets the opportunity to save his teacher’s life, but that is exactly what Dr. Baick did. He diagnosed Mr. Dan Wroblicky with an abnormal heart murmur and sent him for further tests. It was discovered that Dan had a mitral valve prolapse, requiring surgery. The surgery was successful and Dan was back to work in record time, teaching students at University High. Dr. Baick lives in Irvine and is currently a board-certified family physician with the Irvine Family Practice Medical Group. Adam Keefe, a former NBA power forward, graduated in 1988 from Woodbridge High. There, he set many of the school’s basketball records and was named California Athlete of the Year by USA Today. From Irvine, Adam went on to Stanford University, earning a political science degree while playing both basketball and volleyball. He was the Pac-10’s fifth all-time scorer and fourth all-time rebounder. His 1,119 college career rebounds rank No. 1 in Stanford history and No. 4 in conference history, behind only Mel Counts, Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In the 1992 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected Keefe as 10th overall. He spent 9 years in the NBA, mainly with the Utah Jazz, appearing in the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals. In 1999, he played in his 500th career game. Adam currently lives in Pacific Palisades with his wife, Kristen (a member of the 1996 US National Volleyball team) and their four children. LEGACY PARTNERS The IPSF Legacy Partners Major Gifts Campaign recognizes the dedication and commitment of major individual contributors for their support of Irvine schools who, through their great generosity, create a legacy of leadership and financial support. Legacy Partners was established in 2004-2005 by parents who wanted the opportunity to contribute to the welfare of the entire Irvine Unified School District, support our Irvine schools at a significant level and help build a lasting standard of academic excellence for all students. Today, Legacy Partners are those who have donated $10,000 or more to IPSF. We’re proud to have welcomed 72 Legacy Partners since the program began. They have been, and continue to be, instrumental in providing world class educational programs and opportunities to IUSD’s 27,000 students. In 2009, we launched the “100 Legacy Partners Campaign.” Our goal: a total of 100 partners by the end of 2011 school year. Join us. And be part of the legacy. He got his start in one of the country’s premier school systems. Ours. A 1997 graduate of University High School, Atkins earned All-League honors for three consecutive seasons, helping to lead University High to two league titles. He was named League MVP as a junior and senior, and Athlete of the Year in 1997. Atkins was drafted by the NY Mets out of high school, but instead chose to attend UCLA. There, he racked up the longest hitting streak in their history (33 games) and became the first Bruin to ever become a three-time All-American. Garrett was drafted in 2000 by the Colorado Rockies and, by 2006, had posted a .329 batting average, putting him in the top 10 of nearly all batting categories– and in the running for the NL MVP award. Garrett currently lives in Irvine and is the spokesperson for the 100 IPSF Legacy Partners Campaign.
