ROME MILAN FLORENCE EVENT PROGRAMME ESE FLORENCE CAMPUS The ESE Florence centre is located in the Renaissance palace Palazzo Rosselli Del Turco, built between 1507 and 1530, and lies in the very heart of the city in Borgo Santi Apostoli. Many noteworthy art works were made for the residence in the form of painted furniture and frescoes, some of which are now on display in the Uffizi Gallery. The campus is located very near to the famous Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi Gallery. It is centrally located providing students with immediate access to all the beauty and culture this city has to offer. THE VENUE - Teatro Cinema Odeon The Odeon is one of the first movie theaters in Italy and it is probably one of the most beautiful of the whole Italian peninsula. The Palazzo Strozzino, the building in which the European School of Economics LONDON NEW YORK MADRID ROME MILAN FLORENCE EVENT PROGRAMME cinema is located, was built in 1462 and is considered one of the most interesting examples of Renaissance architecture. Built at the behest of Palla Strozzi in 1457, it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. Under the safe operation of Michelozzo the palace was owned by the family until the nineteenth century, before being passed over to the Marquis Carlo Ginori Lisci who sold it to the City. In 1904 it was purchased by the Chiari family, one of the most important hoteliers in the city, with the intention to tranform it into a luxury hotel. But already in 1914 the ownership changed his mind. At the suggestion of the great Eleonora Duse, it was decided to build a large and elegant movie theater and the project was entrusted to Adolfo Coppedé. The completion of the renovation was entrusted to Marcello Piacentini, a very famous Roman architect at the time who transformed the back and the courtyard into an elegant art nouveau cinema-theatre which was opened in 1922. To this day the Odeon retains the original sculptures, tapestries and the wonderful period stained glass cupola. Over the years some of the most glamorous names in show business have appeared in this jewel in the heart of Florence: musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, actresses such as Isabelle Adjani and Anjelica Huston and directors such as Bertolucci, Branagh, Salvatores, Benigni amongst many other stars. In 1919, when the works were already at an advanced stage, the building was acquired by the ItalianAmerican Cinema Society whose president, Alexander Abolaf, was an important film impresario with Greek origins. It’s secrets are a wonderfully mild climate and an impressive treasure of architectural and cultural highlights and artefacts - Michelangelo’s famous sculpture David never fails to impress. It is the source of art works with Renaissance patronage and resides in the constant glow of a prosperous past. Santa Croce, another landmark church of Florence, is famous for its fresco cycles and commemorative monuments. The tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Dante and other historical figures are represented here with elaborate artistic expressions of pride and excellence. The city generates beauty, harmonises nature and favours exclusivity, highly regarded by an endless stream of holidaymakers and intrigued visitors. Florence lists around 80 museums and galleries responsible for the repository of fine art, of which the Galleria degli Uffizi is probably the most rich in Renaissance treasures. First on anyone’s itinerary must be the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, otherwise known as the Duomo of Florence. This commanding structure occupies the centre of a historic UNESCO World Heritage site and reverberates with the Florentines. Climbing some 500 steps to the Cupola, built in 1436, is physically challenging but gives you access to a fabulous outlook post. Giotto’s bell tower, European School of Economics The tradition of preserving the old is continued at the Accademia Gallery and Bargello. today like Gucci and Armani work on or near the bridge Ponte Vecchio which does more than link the two banks of the river Arno. The bridge survived World War II, the flooding of Arno and is a beacon of architectural heritage. Lastly, the seat of power, Palazzo della Signoria displays Vasari’s frescoes and Cellini’s Perseus. Taking a stroll through these visually attractive landmarks and bustling crowds is an inspiring activity in Florence. Non-resident driving is strictly forbidden in the centre, sizable squares with cafes may be used for people-watching. Small narrow streets stretch out in a range of directions. The Boboli Gardens behind the Pitti Palace and the hilltop Piazzale Michelangelo are tried and tested favourites. The Pitti Palace is the former residence of the Medici family who wielded considerable political power and sponsored artisan families.
