November 27, 2013 Vol. 19 No. 19 News Periodical Mailed on November 21 2009 Polaris Ranger 800 Brings $12,100 at Superior Auction Article & photos by Superior Auction & Appraisal, LLC 2009 4WD Polaris Ranger 800 sold for a high bid of $12,100. Continued on pages 6 & 7 I first met Don Herson when the doorbell rang at my home in Menominee, Michigan. At that time, my office manager and I were working in a very small room in our house. The ‘Superior Auction’ sign in our front yard said, “please call for an appointment” was invisible to most people, including Don and his friend. However, when I went to the front door, there stood two very friendly-looking guys and I wasn’t too perturbed. Don, and his good friend, Ted Richter, wanted to talk about a potential auction and I invited them into my kitchen for a cup of coffee. We had a great visit and actually didn’t talk all that much about auctions… Auctioneer Nellie Beland with Client Val Herson. Multi Poker 16T slot machine sold for $1,100. Antique Toys the Focus at Terrific November 2nd Munda Auction in Freeport, Illinois Article & photos by Brian Maloney It seems you can always count on Munda Auctions to deliver when it comes to quality antique auctions. For generations, Munda Auctions of Freeport, Illinois has been one of the region’s premier antique auction houses. A November 2nd Munda specialty auction proved that once again, with the sale of antique toys from the Barb & Augie Comella collection. Hundreds of toys crossed the block during the Saturday morning sale - everything from sleds and coaster wagons to some choice hobby horses and pull-toys. Continued on pages 8 & 17 Cast iron doorstop winner of the sale: this 9” Girl with Teddy Bear that made $220. Auctioneer Doug Munda with the best of the cast iron toys, a “Daisy” bell-toy that later sold for $375. Two more nice animal pull-toys: the German sitting cat version bringing $375, the 11 1/2” bear $325. Don was a very fun-loving guy and had the means to collect a variety of very FUN things! The first auction occurred shortly after that home visit, and included both Don’s and Ted’s ‘toys’ that they felt they were ready to part with. Some of the merchanAuctioneer nellie Beland with Lois dise featured at that 2004 auction included a 1949 American LaFrance fire truck, a Herson 1953 Dodge military ambulance, gas pumps, slot machines, a vintage Jetski, tractors, motorcycles, and many tools and antiques. Like I mentioned previously, Don was a very fun guy! SO he elected to fire his ‘halftrack’ to signal the start of the 2004 auction…ferried our customers to the site in an antique Rolls-Royce….AND persuaded me to be lifted hydraulically on ‘something or the other’ to call for bids!! Don was not the only person into having fun! His family and friends all wore ‘Donny World’ neon shirts and each person had assigned duties! Don had an ‘electronic supervisor,’ a ‘parking engineer,’ and I’m not sure about the other significant titles that he gave the large group of family and friends that were there! BUT I CAN assure that they all had a great time! The estate auction for Don was held on July 27th of 2013 and featured another fire truck – this time a 1952 Marmen Harrington crash truck used in the U.S. Air Force! It was fully operational and included a Continental motor, foam system, built-in generator and a remote engine for the pump. A lucky person drove it away after being the top bidder at $3,600. Don’s wife Lois joined the many other The famous Floyd Herson signing an autograph for a customer. family and friends who were in abundance at this auction also, and many performed their duties from their previous assignments given by Don in 2004! A special guest at the auction was the famous Floyd Herson, Don’s favorite nephew, who signed autographs throughout the day! There were over 350 people in attendance from Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois! Some of the other items sold at the auction included - 2009 4WD Polaris Ranger 800 sold for $12,100.00, Ford Econoline diesel- 4 WD farm tractor with bucket $3,700.00, 2001 Honda Helix $2,150.00, John Deere 400 lawn tractor $1,400.00, John Deere F935 lawn mower w/60” deck $1,400.00, Toro Ground Master 224 lawn mower w/Guardian 62” mower deck $1,200.00, and a Multi Poker 16T slot machine at $1,100.00. We were honored to be selected to do Don’s estate auction after he passed away, but very sad that Don was not physically there to join in the fun! Don’s friend Ted joined in this auction also as he had just sold his real estate in the same neighborhood. Between Don’s Estate and Ted’s merchandise, it was a VERY LARGE auction but we were able to hold the large crowd for the several hours required to sell it all! It was almost nine years to the day from that first auction that we held Don’s Estate Auction after he passed. His daughter Val was our client, and she and I were both on the same page as far as making this second auction another fun event – and even more so because this one would be in memory of Don! A very cool antique tugboat that Don had sold to Ted in prior years went for $1100.00 and tools were in abundance! The Multi-Poker 16T slot machine sold for $1100.00 and the Double Diamond sold for $950.00. Over 100 porcelain signs crossed the block and included new and old – all very desirable! Valerie was one of my favorite clients – she told me what she expected, cooperated immensely, and had that ‘can-do’ attitude that is so important to a successful event! We were very lucky to have Don’s mechanic for over 30 years – Paul Bromund- on board in helping us with the auction being the best it could be! Paul knew the equipment inside and out AND was very forthcoming and honest if there was anything that we sold which had a problem, which there really wasn’t due to Paul’s maintenance over the years. (The 1952 fire truck was fully operational but ran out of gas on the way home?) Great merchandise, cooperative and realistic clients, good weather, happy buyers and sellers – this auction had it all! Our auction goal was for a SUCCESSFUL AND FUN event for Don’s Estate Auction, and through the team effort and cooperation from Don’s family and friends, we succeeded and are very grateful! Superior Auction & Appraisal LLC has been serving Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for 20 years and can be reached at 877-864-2942 and through their website at www.superiorauction.net. $3,600-1952 fire truck-used in the US Air Force. One week might feature early furniture & accessories, the next country stoneware. This November 2nd sale had only one focus though: antique toys. This was the Augie & Barb Comella toy collection, with more than three-hundred lots of period toys from the 19th and early 20th centuries. And among the group sat dozens of pull-toys. The mostly German stuffed animal examples proved popular, the winner a sitting cat that made $375. An American cast iron bell-toy brought the same $375, this one a circa-1900 “Daisy” made by Connecticut’s Gong Bell Mfg. that depicts a rather chillylooking girl clutching her doll as they both ride a horse drawn sleigh. The bigger wheeled toys found ready buyers as well. An early 20th century child’s “horse & cart” velocipede had a great look, and sold for $250. An earlier steel-wheeled velocipede was a good buy too, selling for $125. Pretty much name your toy and it was here, from doll beds to goat carts to a really funky Scandinavian-influenced folk art rocking horse. If you missed this Munda specialty auction, don’t worry - Munda Auctions has something going on most every week. A good sale to attend would be their 37th Annual Thanksgiving Auction, held this year on Saturday, November 30th. You can expect a great mix of classic Americana at that one, everything from country furniture and stoneware to quilts, toys, and more. Auctioneers for the day were Roland and Doug Munda. Munda Auctions has been serving the area’s auction and real estate needs for more than fifty years. They can be contacted by telephone at 815-232-8813. Don’t forget to bookmark their website too, www.mundaauctions.com, for complete auction catalogs, absentee bidding information, and more. And as always, keep an eye out for all their upcoming auction listings in the Auction Action Antique News! 8” cast iron terrier doorstop, good original paint $170. A trio of original-paint cast iron doorstops; the Scottie fetching $170, the parrot $75. 7” trotting horse belltoy - $70. Brass-faced Purina Cow Chow milk scale - $70. 15” salesman’s sample rocking chair, of quartersawn oak - $120. 18” Eclipse child’s washing bench, wringer included - $75. This iron & wood child’s sled sported its original paint decoration, and sold for $160. A $125 bid took this cute child’s cupboard in old red paint. Several doll beds crossed the block, including this fancy brass version that made $75. 26” tall ride-on horse - $90. This Steiff cow pull-toy fetched $175, this cloth horse pull-toy $170. This stylish doll pram measured 34” in length, and sold for $90. Great look to this vintage horse & cart velocipede that sold for $250. 9 Large 2 Day Advertising & Antique Auction Location: 1625 Butts Ave., Tomah, WI. 54660. Inside Heated Building.
