The history of the awning
The history of the awning goes back to ancient times. Even back
then, shade systems were used that were similar to today’s
awning. The term ‘awning’ is derived from the French word for
gentlewoman, “Marquise”. The awning became popular in France
in the 18th century, when shade was rolled out in military camps
whenever the wife of an officer was visiting. In the centuries that
followed, progress took hold. The simple shade covering developed into today’s awning, a sophisticated product that provides

The awning is

The standard Crank Pitch of a
Spettmann awning is 15 degrees.
However, the pitch can be adjusted
to anywhere between 0 and 45
degrees. The STAR-CLASSIC model
offers the option of varying the angle
continuously (up to 45 degrees),
allowing the awning to be adjusted to
suit the height of the sun in the sky
(see page 14).
The awning fabric must be well protected from wind and weather.
The range of Spettmann products encompasses simple protective
sleeves, as well as protective covers and half and fully-enclosed
cassettes.
For semi-cassette awnings, the fabric is almost completely housed in
an aluminum casing.
