The LCBO wants to ‘own’ the beer market during July and August and our main focus will be on our great variety and great value of our single cans; our great line up of Ontario Craft Beers, and new and interesting summer sample packs. Summer Programs Co py We’ll be targeting new and existing LCBO customers- with beer for any and all occasions. So go ahead and serve beer! This guide includes information on all the summer seasonal programs: • the Summer Rosés Program Phase II, • the Big House New Product Launch, • the Ready-To-Drink Sold Space Blockpile, • the Summer Ready-To-Drink product assortment and • the Summer Beer Programs. Cellared in Canada has been renamed International Canadian Blends. Co py O This change is the result of an industry-led research project involving the LCBO, the Wine Council of Ontario, the Winery and Grower Alliance of Ontario and the Grape Growers of Ontario. All agree that International - Canadian Blends provides more information and is more transparent for the consumers. The government is in full support and is expecting the LCBO to execute the change in our stores as soon as possible. The Cellared in Canada signs should now be replaced with the new signs that read International Canadian Blends. The new signs were sent out to stores two weeks ago. Action: The signage identifies non-VQA sections. Tr ad e Please remove and dispose all of the Cellared in Canada, Ontario White Wine, Ontario Red Wine Category signs and install the new International - Canadian Blends Category signs. The VQA and Ontario signs should remain in place to identify VQA products only. Who came up with these changes? y Questions and Answers Co py O The change in store signage comes at the government’s directions based on the results of an industry-led research project which included the LCBO, the Wine Council of Ontario, the Winery & Grower Alliance of Ontario and the Grape Growers of Ontario. The report issued on December 21, 2009 by the Industry Working Group on Label Clarity recommended replacing: Cellared in Canada on LCBO and winery retail store signage with International-Canadian Blends Cellared in Canada from imported and domestic wines on labels with Blended from International and Canadian Wines 2. Why were these changes sought? Tr ad e This change is in response to concerns raised regarding the clarity of the phrase Cellared in Canada over the past year. Although public and media criticism was largely centered in British Columbia, which allows 100 per cent import grape content, there was also criticism of Ontario wineries and the LCBO suggesting the signs and labels were misleading consumers about the content of these wines. Some suggested that signs and labels could create the impression that they were wines made from 100 per cent Canadian grape content. The new terms identify which wines are blended using foreign and domestic grapes, which we believe will reduce any consumer confusion. Ontario currently requires a minimum of 30 per cent Ontario grape content in wines blended in the province. Marketing & Product Guide 5 New Category Signage nl 3. Why do domestic producers need to use foreign grapes at all? y Continued O Wineries source wine for blends from a variety of countries and the source of the import content may vary even within a single year. Wines made from blends of domestic and imported wines or wine content can be found in other countries as this practice allows winemakers to offer lowerpriced wines. Customers buy these wines for their value and quality. These wines typically compete with lower-priced imported wines, not VQA wines made from 100 per cent Ontario grapes, because of their price point. Co py 4. Why do the previous and new signage both use the word “Canadian” rather than “Ontario”? Ontario is a “protected term” in VQA legislation and can only be used on labels of Ontario VQA wines. While this legislation does not apply directly to LCBO signs, not using the term Ontario in signs for blended wines helps to accurately convey the grape content of the wines to consumers. The new term also permits its use nationally since blended wines are also made in other provinces. LCBO’s support for Ontario VQA wines is extensive. As a strong promoter of Ontario suppliers, LCBO has a number of in-store initiatives to promote Ontario. Ontario VQA wines are a leading growth segment at the LCBO. Year-over-year, VQA sales are up almost 20 per cent – a trend driven by LCBO marketing initiatives and high value products from the industry. Tr ad e 5. Will winery retail stores also use the new language on their signs? It is our understanding that the new signage will apply to all stores, however you may want to directly ask operators of winery retail stores about their plans. 6. Will the labels of blended wines change? Many of the requirements for wine labels are established by the federal government and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Sales of beer at the LCBO were up 5.8% (end of Period 12) versus the previous year and cider increased 15%. Growth was driven by strong performance of Ontario Craft Beer, single-serve cans and gift packs. Some of the areas we will focus on throughout 2010 include: Co py Ontario Craft Beers New product introductions, more sampler packs and strong promotional presence in Period 5 will ensure continued growth. Single Serve Beers This segment grew by over 10% last year. Singles will continue to be the preferred format for beer at the LCBO. The Period 5 promotion will focus on Singles again this year. Gifts and Sampler Packs Beer gifts continue to capture our customers’ interest. In 2009, gift sales were 28% higher than the year before, with total sales approaching $3.7 million. Tr ad e Premium Specialty Beer Program This program continues to grow with annual sales in excess of $1.6 million. We are committed to providing customers with the most unique and renowned beers from around the world to create a world class assortment. Knowledgeable Staff Staff knowledge and enthusiasm for beer really made the difference. Too many facings of the same product will make the display seem cluttered, dulling the impact of the products being promoted. • By following the basic principle of ‘like product with like product’, you will accomplish a themed, fully stocked and customer-friendly fixture. • Remember to consider the colour, size and type when building your display. • Placing complementary colours next to each other also enhances the look of the display.
