WELCOME
Oxfordshire Artweeks 2013
Welcome to the 31st Oxfordshire Artweeks festival during
which you can see, for free, spectacular art at hundreds
of places across the county, in studios and along city
streets, in village venues and sculpture gardens. Artweeks
offers everyone, whether a seasoned art enthusiast or an
interested newcomer, the chance to enjoy art in a relaxed
and friendly way, meeting the makers and seeing their
creative talent in action.
Browse the listings and our accompanying website
where you’ll find more examples of artists’ work, and pick
the exhibitions that most appeal to you or are closest
to home. From the traditional to the contemporary, and
with paintings, ceramics, textiles, furniture and jewellery
amongst the offerings, there’s masses to explore and
we hope that you are inspired by the pieces on show
and find some treasures to take home with you. If you’d
like to take part in a workshop, visit www.artweeks.org/
workshops, to find out what’s on offer.
This year, for the first time, many artists will also hold
Christmas exhibitions so please keep this guide until
November and look out for the symbol under the venue
listings.
Artweeks relies on the help of many individuals and
organisations to bring this celebration of the visual arts to
you. We’d like to thank both The Riverly Club, The Oxford
Times and Hamptons International for their support this
year, Flora McLachlan (at Art Jericho, venue 91) for the
cover image and the many other people and places (both
listed on page 4 and too numerous to mention) whose
dedication keeps Artweeks vibrant.

Introducing Caroline Meynell
Winner of the Mary Moser Award 2012
(venues 131 & 57)
Caroline trained as a jeweller in her 20s, and practised
for 30 years. It wasn’t until an accident caused her to
lose the sight in one of her eyes that she had to give
up jewellery and began to paint. She largely eschews
greens to depict landscapes in blues and earthy
pigments. Despite the energy used to create each
piece, she paints until she’s exhausted, continually
dancing around a canvas laid flat, Caroline’s
landscapes are reflective, with soft colours gently
infused with light, full of a stillness and peace that draw
people in and create a sense of space in busy lives.
This annual award was established to honour Mary
Moser’s commitment to Artweeks and to help
develop the career of a professional artist who has
taken up art as a second career later in life. If you
have a nomination for this year’s award, then please
email artweeks@artweeks.org.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Paintings by Caroline
Meynell, winner of the 2012
Mary Moser Award will be
exhibited in Summertown
(venue 131) and in the
O3 Gallery (venue 57)
alongside an exhibition
which examines trends
and developments in
contemporary illustration;
how our visual language
reflects the meeting of
traditional draughtsmanship
and emerging techniques
such as digital manipulation, and explores what
contemporary illustration
and animation tell us
about 21st century visual
consumption. Presented in
association with Comma.
