Please sign up today for your Lighthouse Day and help us spread the word in any way you can including through Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. This year the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity marks an amazing 60 years of delivering financial and welfare support to over 15,000 construction workers and their families. To mark this very special occasion we’ve launched our campaign, “One day ….to help our own”. The campaign is aimed at encouraging as many of the 360,000 companies in our industry as possible to nominate just one day in their year to be their “Lighthouse Day” and raise funds for our cause. Our charity receives no public funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the industry to deliver support to those in need in our construction community and so, to continue our vital work we need your help more than ever. Turn to the back page of the newsletter to find out how to register your Lighthouse Day. Thank you for making 2015 such a significant year… here’s to our 60th and doing even better! During 2015 we raised an incredible £845,000 and our charitable giving for the year amounted to £780,000, a significant increase on previous years. But we need to do more. Yours sincerely If we can reach the 360,000 companies in construction and just 1% register for a Lighthouse Day and raise just £500 each, then we’d raise over £1.5m. Join us in celebrating our fantastic milestone with a champagne reception, gourmet three course dinner, wine, beer, entertainment including a live band and the unforgettable fun fair. This year’s ball is a black tie event which promises to be a fun filled evening from start to finish, taking place right in the heart of London. For more information and how to book please see Page.11 A swinging success Eight teams lined up to challenge each other and the course at Willmott Dixon Mancetter Site Team’s charity golf day. Jim Donnelly, Construction Manager tells us about the event. “Every year we like to throw a charity fundraiser of some description and as our golf day was so successful last year we thought we would do it again. The event was held at Kenilworth Golf Club on the 16th October. The club is situated in the heart of Warwickshire, with beautiful parkland views and is one of the best clubs in the area. It was no surprise that the places were snapped up within the first week of the invitations going out.” “The day was a huge success and the team was delighted to raise a total of £700 for the Lighthouse Club. We chose the Lighthouse Club as our nominated charity this year because they support people within the industry that we work in. Some of us have witnessed first-hand the considerable family anxiety and hardship that can come about through construction related incidents so we can really appreciate their hard work and dedication.” “THE DAY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS AND THE TEAM WAS DELIGHTED TO RAISE A TOTAL OF £700 FOR THE LIGHTHOUSE CLUB.” The proud victors on the day were TC Interiors. Well done to them and thank you to everyone who raised money whilst having fun! Success set in concrete This year’s CONSTRUCT DAY for those working in the concrete structures industry was held at The Brewery on Friday, 2nd October 2015 and once again the day was a resounding success with well over 400 people attending and 35 exhibitors. The day started with an exhibition and a champagne reception, during which time a roving caricaturist showed off his skills with the scissors by snipping away the silhouettes of many of the guests. Aeroplane and car racing simulators also provided much amusement for everyone. During an excellent lunch, donations were collected for the Heads and Tails competition and the winner was presented with a Jeroboam of champagne. The speaker this year was Jeff Probyn who was very funny and entertaining. Jeff very kindly donated a tie to commemorate the 100th rugby match between England and Ireland in 1988 and the tie was won and very appreciatively received by Pat Boyle of MPB Structures. @Lighthouseclub_ #Lighthouseday Mark Wadsworth, CONSTRUCT Chairman presented Robert Smith of The Lighthouse Club with a cheque for £9,167.20. All of the CONSTRUCT award winners also very generously donated their prize money. A big thank you to William Childs of J P Dunn Construction Ltd, A J Morrisroe and Sons Ltd, Ischebeck Titan Ltd and UNPS Ltd. At the end of the day, the fundraising activities raised an amazing £9,167.20. Well done to everyone involved. The Woodford Heating and Energy Charity Ball was a huge success leaving all guests overjoyed and looking forward to next year’s annual event. Andrew Cox, director of safety, health, environment and quality at FM Conway, commented: “The Lighthouse Club does great work to promote health and safety awareness throughout the construction industry and supports members of our community who have suffered as a result of accident, injury or bereavement. It is a cause which is extremely important to us as a company and we are very proud to have been able to support it.” Lighthouse News | Issue 211 5 A Christmas Cracker 60 th Christmas cheer helps raise £150,000 at our sell out Christmas lunch 2015 ANNIVERSARY 00 £150,0 D RAISE We are delighted to be able to celebrate our 60th Anniversary at this year’s Christmas Lunch. This event sold out in 2015... After 2014’s resounding success it was always going to be a tough call to raise the benchmark in 2015. Expectations were high as the 1000 guests from London’s construction industry poured through the revolving doors of the Park Plaza Westminster for this sell out event, in what was loosely themed as an Olympic prelude. The guests were welcomed by a host of stunning and colourful Brazilian dancers and a pint of Guinness, their faces immediately lit up with smiles and the banter and laughter soon filled the room… and at this point we knew we were in for a cracking afternoon. During the afternoon we were royally entertained by the celebrity guests of Sally Gunnell, Barry McGuigan, Phil Vickery and Richard Dunwoody ably interviewed by the consummate relaxed style of John Inverdale in what was a mixture of hilarious anecdote and insight into the world of sport. Thanks to McGee Group Ltd, we were also delighted to have the legendary All Black, Zinzan Brooke join our celebrity panel. He gave an inspirational and lovely tribute to the late great Jonah Lomu. Then to end the celebrity Q&A, Barry McGuigan delivered his own tribute by recapturing the atmosphere of his historic win in 1985 by singing an emotional rendition of “Danny Boy”- the audience spontaneously joined in! so please book early to guarantee your place! GOLD - £4000 Once again close up magic was performed by Nick Einhorn and Laura London who completely transfixed the guests with unbelievable trickery. During the afternoon we raised funds for the charity through a raffle sponsored by RIFT and a “live” and “silent” auction. The total raised on the day after all event expenses was a magnificent £150,000! The guests slowly dispersed to the onsite after party where the banter and networking continued for some time. A huge thank you to all that supported this event. In our 60th Anniversary Year for the Lighthouse Club we are already organising another fabulous event, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment! linkedin.com/company/lighthouse-construction-industry-charity SILVER - £3500 • • • • Table of 10 in front 6 rows to stage Complimentary lager, beer and Guinness Full page advert in table brochure Logo on the central screens as a ‘SILVER’ sponsor in the main dining area BRONZE - £3000 • Table of 10 in front 12 rows to stage • Half page advert in table brochure • Logo on the central screens as a ‘BRONZE’ sponsor in the main dining area Lighthouse News | Issue 211 7 Regional Clubs Roundup Scotland West Dinner Success… LINCS E SOUTH RN AN D SCOTLST WE The Scotland West Club branch took its annual fund-raising past the £20,000 mark at its annual dinner in Glasgow. The night was attended by 270 guests, filling 25 tables at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. The two guest speakers were Jim Robertson and Isobel Rutter. An auction and raffle with a top prize of a week for two to Portugal raised almost £13,000. Branch Chairman Alistair Murdoch thanked the table hosts, sponsors and guests for their support and making his second year as the Chairman such a great experience. An amazing 514 people attended the Lunch, the largest attendance ever, enjoying good food and superb entertainment, with our resident compère Mike Osman at his usual magnificent best. Although numbers were down a little on the previous year with 205 guests attending at the Beachcomber Club at Humberston, income was at a similar level. Thanks to the hard work of Jo and Rosie, raffle income was the highest in three years. The Secretary, Tim Brant thanked the 18 companies and guests for their support of the event. Chairman, Allan Hemmings was absent as he was celebrating his Golden Wedding with wife Ann. Congratulations from everyone at the club! Tim thanked all the Committee members for their dedicated input in making it another successful event. “Stand-up bingo” and a “fiver” raffle for a gallon bottle of whisky got the proceedings off to a good start especially when the winner, Alan Burns, very kindly donated it back for the auction. Mancunian comedian, Austin Knight got the audience laughing with his great selection of jokes. SOUTH WEST Central Christmas Lunch CE NTR AL The successful golf day in Oxford in September was followed by an even more successful Christmas lunch held at Drayton Park Golf Club near Abingdon in Oxfordshire. N South West Gold Cup Race Day Nottingham Club Christmas Lunch Members of The South West Lighthouse Club enjoyed a great days racing at Exeter for the famous Haldon Cup on Tuesday 3rd November 2015. Table sales increased to over 400 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Nottingham with places selling out in July. The main sponsors were Groundforce Shorco Vp and TC Harrison JCB. The Lighthouse Club enjoyed their private Golden Jubilee Suite for the day and enjoyed a scrumptious lunch, Devon cream tea, in room bar and tipster. Geoff Harris the MC for the day did an excellent job keeping order and the raffle ladies worked the floor well. On the last race of the day, Chairman of the South West, David Jeffery, Devon Welfare Officer, Susanne Furse, and Secretary, Rob Bennett, along with other members of the club were invited into the paddock ring to choose the best turned out horse and present the prize to the winning stable lad. Chris Balls asked everybody to dig deep and the auction raised a record breaking £12,000. Roger De Coursey & ‘Nookie the Bear’ completed the entertainment and the total money raised was a record breaking £31,000. What a night! A big thank you to all the sponsors who supported us. 8 Lighthouse News | Issue 211 The bar takings record set the previous year was broken, something the organising team were all mighty proud about and of course the venue was also quite happy with that achievement! Lincolnshire Club After the raffle, Committee member and event compère, Nick Borst performed a marathon two hour auction with his usual amusing repartee. He even auctioned off his red trouser braces for £120. Now that’s what we call commitment! HAM OTTING Although we unfortunately lost the services of Martin Bayfield at the eleventh hour, Kevin Keegan his replacement was absolutely superb. He was very professional and had a great attitude and a desire to please everyone. They then watched the final race and the following presentation to the winning owners and trainer. Susanne Furse proposed a toast to the syndicate of the winning owners and a thoroughly good day was enjoyed by all. Nearly 200 attendees from companies across Oxfordshire and the neighbouring counties enjoyed the pre lunch (and after lunch!) drinks, a three course meal and great entertainment from the guest speaker, Russ Williams, a Lighthouse Club regular. Russ followed his hilarious ‘presentation’ by conducting the auction of a large number of donated items. The event, the most successful for many years, in terms of attendees, raised approximately £4,000. Hands Up! Our regional clubs are always looking for volunteers to help in their fundraising activities and events. So, if you think you can assist in any way, however small, please get in touch by emailing info@ lighthouseclub.org or calling 0845 609 1956. We’d be delighted to hear from you. Scotland East Club Go Karting AN D SCOTL T EAS On Tuesday 8th September 2015, 10 teams took to the track at Xtreme Karting in Edinburgh, to battle it out for the first annual Lighthouse Club Xtreme Karting Event. The event consisted of an initial 20 minute practice/qualifying session, where each team got a feel for the track and tried to set a fast time for the starting grid. Following this was a gruelling two hour endurance race. Teams opted for 20 minute stints at the wheel, which was physically exhausting. The objective of the race, was to complete as many laps as possible in the allocated two hour time slot. It started well for “The Green Machines”, who took pole position and remained in the lead for the first 20 minutes or so, however, as frustration grew with the back markers, time penalties had to be served in the pits allowing “Last and Furious” to creep into the lead. Their continuous solid driving ensured they stayed at the front for the rest of the period, and meant the others were chasing their tail. “Last and Furious” were crowned the winners and completed the event with circa 215 laps. The event was very kindly sponsored by Keyline and SIG, which ensured all participants were extremely well fed and watered throughout the course of the evening. As well as having a brilliant high octane evening, the event raised £750.00 for the Lighthouse Club Charity”. Southern Club Sports Lunch The Southern Club held its Sporting Lunch last November as usual at St Mary’s, some saying it was our most successful one ever! H IR E YOR KS The Venturer 300 (a magnificent piece of technology affectionately referred to as The Venturer Music Centre) Club Founders Certificate was introduced this year with 16 initial contributors, one of which was Tom McNamara, a major fund provider for the Southern Club. Another successful event and sincere thanks to all those who supported us. Here’s to 2016! lations Andy, can you do the hatrick next year? Special mention goes to Chris Proudfoot who was still creaking from giving Mo Farah a run for his money in the Great North Run. Chris came second on 33 points and had a nearest the pin. Thanks also to Ardent Fire Suppression who couldn’t attend but still made a large donation to the charity. A good day out was had by all and £467 was raised for the charity. Yorkshire Annual Dinner The 3rd Yorkshire Club Charity Golf Day This year’s event was jointly sponsored by Wrights of Crockey Hill and Chris Wright Baildon. 16 players set out under beautiful blue skies all with hopes of victory, however it was last years winner Andy who scored on every hole to finish on 35 points. Congratu- The annual dinner sponsored by TS Plant Sales was a sell out. Comedian ‘Rudi West’ kept everyone laughing and once again Watts & Associates managed the auction. They did a tremendous job considering the PA system kept failing, or as MC Malcolm Lord put it, “Can we say a big thank you to Fisher-Price for providing the microphones today!” Despite these technical issues, the event raised £25,000!! Lighthouse News | Issue 211 9 GB Triumphant in Ambassadors Challenge Cup The Indian summer beamed its golden rays on Foxhills Golf Club as the British and Irish teams assembled for the second Ambassadors Challenge Cup. Last year Ireland had a resounding win and this year, GB were out to even the score. The contest was a collaboration between the British and Irish Trade Alliance (BITA) and the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, not only to promote networking and trade within the construction community but also to raise funds to support the charity. After rousing captain’s speeches the shotgun blasted and the gladiatorial battle commenced against 18 pairings from each country in a “Ryder Cup” style contest. Daniel Mulhall, the Irish Ambassador in London led the Irish team and due to a late schedule change for the British Ambassador in Dublin, the 2003 Rugby World Cup English hooker, Mark Regan stood in to lead team GB. However, as the Guinness poured and the wine was slurped the victory cries and the tears of defeat soon gave way to friendly banter and convivial conversations of stories of the one that got away and the possibility of doing a little business together. The day was not for the Irish as their team failed to tame the long par 5s of the Bernard Hunt course and fell to the superior fire power of team GB, 11 points to 7. MAIN STAGE With the score now even at one all, the stage is set for a competitive return match this year, however the real winner on the day was our industry charity with over £10,000 raised. Thank you to the lovely Lucia Butler and European Golf Challenge for the huge amount of photographs. This year, the battle commences on Friday 30th September so to make sure you’re a part of the construction industry’s very own Ryder Cup, visit the events page of our website and book your place. We caught up with Dan to see how he is getting on. Like a lot of teenagers, after leaving school I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career and after working behind a checkout and selling tickets at Warwick Castle, I decided I wanted to do something that really made a difference. My dad used to work long hours in a foundry before becoming a self-employed builder. After lending him a helping hand every so often, his hard work began to inspire me, and I decided to follow his footsteps in the construction industry. I have now been studying at the University of Sheffield for the past four years, but with only a dissertation and a couple of modules left to complete, my life as a student will be over this summer. I have been working towards a Master’s degree in Civil & Structural Engineering, and plan to become a chartered civil engineer when I leave. The most enjoyable part of my degree was a group project where we designed an ecofriendly manufacturing complex from scratch on a real abandoned site we visited in Sheffield. During the summer holidays I have been working with Balfour Beatty on The Diamond, a new engineering building for the university, which opened in September 2015. In the initial stages of the project, I helped a senior engineer with levelling and surveying on the site, as well as checking contractors’ reinforcement work and concrete casting was done correctly. A year later the project was in its final stages, and I was trusted to manage contractors and de-snag a floor of the building. I have been very lucky to work on such a large project, and now enjoy studying in the building I helped to build. The Lighthouse Club has financially supported me throughout the past four years and I cannot thank them enough. Knowing that I have people supporting me has driven me on to work harder, and I hope to show my gratitude by continuing to work hard for the construction industry. Charity champions and corporate supporters “A great big thank you to every single company and charitable trust listed below for choosing to sponsor us. Your generosity means that we can continue our vital work to help construction families in need.” Bill Hill, CEO, The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. Tony Green, John Kane and Paul Murray were all stalwart supporters of the Club and will be sadly missed. Please take a moment to remember them. Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends and colleagues. Picture: Tony and wife, Maureen Anthony Michael (Tony) Green 27th August 1933 – 14th January 2016 Born in London, raised in Northern Ireland and Birmingham, and educated at King Edwards School in Birmingham. In his youth, he played rugby, cricket and tennis with some distinction, was a good golfer and also a driving force in the King Edwards Old Boys Association and hosted many ‘old boy’ reunions with fellow classmates with whom he maintained contact with for over 60 years. His career in cranes and plant spanned over 50 years, with companies such as Roads & Runways, Rush & Tompkins and then Richards & Wallington soon to become British Crane Hire, which brought him eventually to Somerset. In 1977 he started his own crane hire company which he ran until selling it in 1990 to continue with Mendip Mini Excavators and latterly, Taunton Lifting Services, a company still in operation. Tony always maintained his spiritual home was South Wales where in the late 1950’s, he first became involved in what turned out to be a lifelong connection with the Lighthouse Club. When he moved to Somerset he helped set up a branch there which eventually became known as the Western Branch. Tony became treasurer of the branch right up to when he had a stroke which hit him very hard in November 2014. He became a National council member for the Club and when other branches were struggling Tony was the first to volunteer to go and help. Tony took on the role of keeping all the branches in the South and Wales up to date with General Council information and made a point of attending their functions and providing support. Tony never did anything by half measures, he was truly an ‘all or nothing’ chap. He was a treasured husband, father and grandfather and a charismatic character who will not be forgotten. He will be very much missed by everyone in The Lighthouse Club. 14 Lighthouse News | Issue 211 National Date Event Venue / Location Organiser Tel Email 21st April JSP Construction Industry Pro-Am Tournament Foxhills Golf Club Bill Hill 07776 177298 bill.hill@lighthouseclub.org 24th April London Marathon London Steve Radcliffe 07786 021523 marathon@lighthouseclub.org 1st July BITA Golf Masters London Golf Club TN15 7EH National Office 0845 609 1956 info@lighthouseclub.org 9th July Construction Industry Summer Ball The Honourable Artillery Company, London Gemma Southgate 01473 219861 events@lighthouseclub.org Picture: John at a Castrol works conference in 1995 9th July 60th Anniversary Cycle Challenge The 2012 Olympic Park Velodrome Bill Hill 07776 177298 bill.hill@lighthouseclub.org John Kane 10th July The British 10K London Run London Steve Radcliffe 07786 021523 marathon@lighthosueclub.org 15th September 1932 – 28th February 2016 31st July Ride London London-Surrey Steve Radcliffe 07786 021523 marathon@lighthouseclub.org 30th Aug Construction Industry S E England Open Championship The Berkshire Bill Hill 07776 177298 bill.hill@lighthouseclub.org It is with deep regret that the Dublin Branch announces the passing of its former Chairman John Kane on Sunday 28th February 2016. 30th Sep Construction Charity Ambassodors Cup Foxhills Bill Hill 07776 177298 bill.hill@lighthouseclub.org 16th Oct LHC Run John O’Groats to Lands End Alan Waterson Dave Adams 07532 270913 07774 668596 alan_waterson@btinternet.com davida_071@btinternet.com 2nd Dec Christmas Lunch Party The Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster Bridge Mandy Mallitt 0845 609 1956 info@lighthouseclub.org In his 40 years of service to the Lighthouse Club, John held all the main positions within the committee, Welfare Officer, Secretary including Membership and Treasurer and was a mainstay of continuity in the functioning of the Club’s charitable work in Ireland. From a background in the Lubricating Oil business as Sales Manager with Castrol (Ireland) Ltd and subsequently Burmah Castrol he also had a vital co-ordinating role in running the Lighthouse fund raising functions in Dublin. These were very successful reaching a peak in the Celtic Tiger years. As with all events, a lot is done behind the scenes by many people and John would always be there bringing the large Lighthouse model and banners with him to display prominently at functions. John threw himself wholeheartedly into the work to be done and knew instinctively how it should be organised. He prepared invoices for tickets and auction items sold and as treasurer, presented lists of monies due at the monthly committee meetings. John being a people person was always ready to travel to Belfast, Cork and Galway to support the other Irish branches. In his day, John was a National champion cyclist, specialising in the longer distances and was a reserve to go to the 1952 Olympic games in Helsinki. John was a happy family man and enjoyed the cut and thrust of life until he started to suffer from memory loss that developed into Alzheimer’s. He has been greatly missed since retiring in 2011 due to ill health and was a great servant to the Lighthouse Club. John is survived by his wife Jean and their four children Therese, Elizabeth (Liz), Peter and Sinead.
