In the fall of 1998, the University of Louisiana at Monroe announced that women’s soccer would become a varsity sport beginning in the upcoming season. On Feb. 11, 1999, Rena
Richardson was named ULM’s first head coach in the sport.
Having little time to recruit, Richardson assembled a team made up of junior college
transfers, high school recruits, and players that were already playing club soccer at ULM.
After dropping the first two games of the season, history was made. On Sept. 3, Rachal
Casillas scored ULM’s first goal and led the team to a 1-0 win over Tennessee Tech - the first in
the short history of the women’s soccer program.
The Lady Indians would go on to finish their inaugural season with a 5-15-0 record and
a 3-9-0 mark in Southland Conference play.
Erin Mosely finished as ULM’s top scorer with four goals, two assists, and 10 points, while
Jamie Pawlik and Jessica Rodriguez earned second team all-Southland Conference honors.

2000 Season: 5-14-1 / 4-7-1
Back Row [L-R]: Head coach Rena Richardson, assistant coach Stacy Lamb, Heather Myers, Erin Caulk, Autumn Brooks,
Jennifer Doran, Crystal Johnston, Chelsea Shriner, Jessica Robinson, athletic trainer Nikki Rainwater. Middle Row [L-R]:
Assistant coach Ged O’Connor, Jamie Pawlik, Jade Johnson, Jessica Berbling, Cindy Barker, Shanda Boyles, Jeanne Braswell,
Erin Mosely, athletic trainer Stephanie Mayeux. Front Row [L-R]: Rachel Scott, Hope Davidson, Michelle Thrasher, Tasha
Moore, Erin Sherry, Victoria Lamb.
Head coach Rena Richardson knew that the early years would be difficult. In her second
season, her ULM squad featured 12 freshmen that played on very successful high school and
club teams that were getting their first taste of collegiate soccer.
Making the job a little easier for Richardson was the hiring of Stacy Lamb, ULM’s first
full-time assistant coach.
The 2000 squad had just 19 players, including only seven returning student-athletes
from the season before. Despite this youth, Richardson expected the team to be more competitive and challenge for a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
ULM looked like it would make history in 2000 as it vaulted to first place to being conference play with a 3-1 record behind the play of star freshmen Cindy Barker and Chelsea Shriner.
The team, however, went into a tailspin and lost eight straight games while scoring only a pair
of goals.
ULM just missed out on a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament after finishing
fifth. The team finished the season on a good note by beating Nicholls State, 1-0, and tying
Stephen F. Austin, 1-1.

Prior to the 2001 season, ULM saw its first coaching change as Rena Richardson left to accept a position at Alabama and, on January 25, Stacy Lamb was elevated from assistant coach to
become the program’s second head coach.
ULM would go on to make a lot of noise and headlines during the season and contend for
a Southland Conference title. The program rattled off three straight Southland Conference wins
and then played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie against in-state rival LSU.
On September 21, Chelsea Shriner again made history by recording ULM’s first hat trick as
ULM defeated Stephen F. Austin, 4-3.
ULM continued its surge and ended the season in a tie for second place and earned a spot
in the Southland Conference Tournament. The team’s title hopes fell short as they lost to Southeastern Louisiana in the opening round.
Still, the season was one of milestones. Shriner scored a school-record 10 goals and earned
first-team all-conference honors. The sophomore was named Louisiana Player of the Year.
Cindy Barker and Victoria Lamb also earned all-conference honors while Stacy Lamb was
named league and Louisiana Coach of the Year after guiding the team to a 9-10-2 record.

After a stellar season, ULM was out to prove that 2001 was no fluke.
Playing a difficult non-conference schedule against some of the top programs in the
region, ULM failed to win a game and started the year 0-5-1. Head coach Stacy Lamb would
rally the troops around freshman sensation Julia McVarish who scored eight goals during the
campaign and junior Cindy Barker who scored six goals and added four assists.
When it was all said and done, ULM finished the conference schedule with a 6-3-3 record
and were just two points shy of a Southland Conference regular season championship.
ULM again met up with Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Conference Tournament, a team it went 1-0-1 against during the regular season. SELU roughed up ULM in the
contest, winning 5-0.
McVarish and Barker earned all-conference and all-Louisiana honors. ULM goalkeeper
Rachel Marcom stepped into the starting role during the second game of the season after
veteran goalie Jessica Robinson went out with an injury and put up some astonishing numbers. Marcom recorded a program-high 20 saves in a 1-0 loss to Southwest Texas and ended
the season with a record 188 saves - ranking sixth nationally in saves per game.

The ULM women’s soccer team fought to the finish in 2003, taking half of their first six
opponents to single and double overtime. Frustrations were rising as the program entered
Southland Conference play with a 2-5-1 record.
ULM managed to turn its season around in the last 10 regular season games, winning
five and tying one to make their third consecutive tournament trip. ULM was ranked fifth going against the fourth-place team and longtime rival Northwestern State. ULM upset the Lady
Demons on their own turf, 4-1, in a team season-high for scoring and the most in program
history in the postseason. Alicia Hamilton tied the Southland Conference individual record for
goals in a tournament game with two.
ULM remained true to form and literally fought to the last second against number one
seed Southeastern Louisiana in the semifinals. In regular season play, SELU defeated ULM
twice with four goals both times. In the last match, ULM played to a 0-0 tie until the Lady Lions
scored with under four minutes. With one second left on the clock, ULM received a penalty
kick and chance to extend the game, but missed with a ball that struck the top right corner of
the post. The defeat marked the third-straight season that ended in a loss to SELU.
2004 Season: 14-6-2 / 7-4-1
Back Row [L-R]: Head coach Stacy Lamb, assistant coach Freddy Delgado, Kelly Lanter, Allison Matson, Rosie Campbell,
Nicole Nichols, Laurie Arnold, Kristie Morgan, athletic trainer Brad Hill. Middle Row [L-R]: Julia McVarish, Alicia Hamilton,

Parella, Kortney Harris, Rachel Marcom.
Without question ULM enjoyed the greatest season on the soccer pitch during the 2004
campaign. All the pieces were in place and records fell by the wayside thanks to the team’s
combination of experience and incoming talent from impact freshmen. By the end of the season, an overtime goal in the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament
by Texas State prevented the program from its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
ULM’s 14-win season started ominously slow. After a double-overtime tie at Tulane and
a 7-1 loss at home against Texas-El Paso, the team went on the road for the start of a threegame road trip in the beginning of September. By the time ULM had turned the page on the
month and entered October, the squad had supplanted itself in the middle of the conference
race by rattling off a stretch of seven wins in eight matches.
Entering the league tournament, a familiar foe stood in ULM’s way as host Southeastern
Louisiana, the squad that had ended the Warhawks season three straight years, was the program’s first round opponent. ULM would knock off the Lady Lions, 4-3, and down Stephen F.
Austin, 2-1, before falling in overtime to Texas State, 1-0.
Breakout freshmen Kortney Harris and Amanda Wing enjoyed two of the top seasons in
school history offensively while Rachel Marcom enjoyed a record-setting year in goal.

While the 9-9-2 overall record might lead people to believe otherwise, the ULM Warhawks took another huge step forward in the 2005 season. The record books continue to be
rewritten.
The 2005 season was marked by offensive explosions and lock-down defenses. A September 9 game against Alcorn State marked a program-high in shots on goal (24), goals (9),
assists (5), and points (23) in a single game.
Behind 2005 All-Southland Conference honoree Tara Balogh’s seven scores, the Warhawks tallied a program-record 39 goals on the season, besting the previous year’s record.
The team’s 26 assists, 104 points, and 1.89 goals-per-game average were also school offensive
records.
The defense, led by all-conference selections Julia McVarish and Rachel Marcom allowed
only 29 goals and notched another seven shutouts, both improvements on the program records established one season earlier.
By the time the end of the season had rolled around, ULM’s 2005 squad had tied or set
12 team records.

The 2006 season marked a new beginning for the Warhawk women’s soccer team. In
addition to stepping onto a new home field, the ULM Soccer Complex, for the first time, the
team entered its first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, a traditionally tough
collegiate soccer league.
The Warhawks were battle-tested early, posting a .500 non-conference record at 4-4-1
through the first half of the season before entering league play against two-time defending
league champion North Texas. In that game, ULM showed it could compete in its new league
by hanging tough with the Mean Green before falling by a 4-2 score.
The inexperience of a team that featured nine freshmen and six sophomores showed
itself early in the conference slate as the Warhawks limped out to a 0-8-0 league start. After
that, the team started to come together and finished the year with a 1-1-1 record in the final
three matches including the school’s first ever Sun Belt league victory, a 4-2 triumph against
Troy. ULM finished the season with a 0-0 double-overtime tie against in-state rival and conference-tournament bound Louisiana-Lafayette on the road.

In only its second season in the Sun Belt Conference the ULM soccer team took another
huge step forward. Competing with a roster dominated by underclassmen the youthful Warhawks saw a three win improvement from their first go through in the Belt, including a three
win increase in the league win ledger. The improvements in the win column would still put
ULM outside the postseason tournament looking in as the team finished a half game out of
the final spot.
Still, the team made great strides during the season. Of the Warhawks six league losses,
five came by a single goal including losses at defending champion Denver (1-0) and against
regular season champion Western Kentucky (2-1). Add two more one-goal losses during the
non-conference portion of the schedule and the Warhawks were one bounce away from victory in seven different games.
Playing their best soccer late, ULM out scored its opponents by a 12-9 margin and posted a goals against average of 0.88 over the final 10 games of the season - all against league
foes. The heartbreakingly close losses served as a reminder to the rest of the league that the
Warhawks were in it to not only compete, but also win.
2008 Season: 4-13-1 / 1-9-1
Standing [L-R]: Assistant coach Aaron Cline, athletic trainer Courtney White, Samantha Cashman, Abby Sosa, Ashleigh
Fitterer, Raydan Phillips, Amanda Strope, Emily LyBarger, Kelly Browne, Rachel Hobson, student manager Jamie Solley, head
coach Stacy Lamb. Kneeling [L-R]: Jeana Chesnik, Britni Shriver, Mindi Giroir, Mallory George, Megan Payne, Maddy Ocon,
Amy Porch. Sitting [L-R]: Lindsey Tubbs, Stacey Carmack, Brittany Lee, Britnie Markham, Kendall Dawkins, Tiffany Bombard,
Elissa Fralicks
Celebrating its 10th season of existence, the soccer program opened the year with
three consecutive wins for the first time before injuries piled up. Junior goalkeeper Mallory
George, the squads only net minder, suffered a shoulder injury at Centenary on September 9
that never fully healed. An already small roster was decimated by the injuries and would come
up on the short end of five games in which the squad led at one point only to tie or fall by a
single score.
Despite the injuries, the Warhawks were able to notch a milestone victory against perennial Sun Belt power North Texas on September 28. Two days after leading league champion
Denver for the first 70 minutes, ULM jumped on the Mean Green early and held on for a 3-2
victory. The win marked the Warhawks first ever victory over the Mean Green and rivaled a
2001 tie of LSU as the biggest game in the young program’s history.
Sophomore Tiffany Bombard scored seven goals on the season, the fifth most in one
year in program history, and vaulted into the top five in program history in the category. Seniors Rachel Hobson, Kendall Dawkins, Brittany Lee, Amanda Strope, and Jeana Chesnik
all saw their ULM careers come to a close.
