If anyone can’t meet us in Santa Rosa and would like to meet us at the track please let me know in your RSVP. Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on the th 30 . ESCA had it's first Autocross of the season on Saturday, March 28th. We had 65 drivers that autocrossed that day. Mark Mervich was first place in his Formula Ford race_car, followed by Guy Southern in his Corvette for 2nd place, and then Jim Winston with his 240Z placing 3rd overall for the day. We were given a very quick lunch break after our 3 morning runs, which count toward our year ending points. After lunch we continued with our fun runs. Quite a few people went home and it was difficult to fill worker positions for our fun runs that afternoon. Wish there is something we can do differently so we can get people to stay and help out. However, we appreciate everyone that did stay and worked as well as cleaning up and putting everything away after the day is over. Thanks! ESCA had its 51st April Fools Rallye on April 12th. I showed up that morning to help out and work the Rallye. It was good to see many First Timers and Beginners listening in on the Rallye School that took place before the Rallye began at the Snoopy Home Ice Arena parking lot. There were 37 cars that participated that day. I worked the first checkpoint and got to see and meet everyone. My job was to have them select their cards for their poker hand. When I left way past the allotted time there was still one car out that hadn’t shown up. They must of got lost or had car trouble. I hope they made it to the finish for pizza. The results should be in another article in this newsletter. ESCA is planning another Autocross on April 25th, remember to get there (not before 8am) in plenty of time to get your car through tech and find out your worker position for the day. I will write about the autocross event next month and let you know how it went and how much fun everyone had. After the last autocross event, my Miata developed a coolant leak along with a small oil leaks it has had in the past. So, I thought it was time to do something about it. After steam cleaning the engine and the undercarriage I determined it was in need of a water pump, cam seals and crank seals. The water pump is behind the timing belt so a new timing belt, timing continued in next column Page 2 pulley and tensioner pulley were also needed. Which led to a very time consuming repair lasting 2 ½ days along with 5 hours of parts searching to complete the job. While I had the valve cover off, I felt the desire to clean and paint it bright red. Looks Great! The tech inspectors at the next autocross will appreciate it. Now I’m searching for race tires. It looks like the last autocross was really hard on them: they’re shot! Trying desperately to find new ones, otherwise I’ll be using my street tires for the next autocross event. Still planning my 1st track day on May 8th at Thunderhill, with Hooked on Driving. It’s a five mile track and I plan on going with Blain Hendricks, it should be a great experience. Can’t wait. I’ll tell you all about it in next month’s article. Until then, I will see you at the track! Please Welcome New Member.... But it wasn’t all work of course. It was great to be out on the track again, along with all the drivers who came out to help kick off the 2015 season! Chicanery - The First AutoX of 2015 by John Perlis, Co-chair The weather couldn’t have been nicer on the 28th, as the driest March on record rolled to a parched conclusion. There was no drought of fun on the track, however, as 65 drivers competed in the first autoX of the season. Craig Hammond was the event chair. He kindly showed me the ropes and let me lay out my first course, which featured two crossovers and a notable lack of straightaways. There were three timed runs in the morning and another three fun runs in the afternoon. Mark Mervich took TTOD on race tires, and Cody Farrell got TTOD on street tires. Congratulations, gentlemen! Thanks to everyone who made the event happen. Time 1st March 28, 2015 Autocross Results www.empiresportscar.org Rallye Fun in the Sun By Bob the Beard It is hard to believe that ESCA has presented the Annual April Fools Rallye 51 times and even harder to believe that The Beard has been Rallymaster for 50 of those times (because he ran the first one). Once again the rallyists came from afar; Nevada, Los Angeles, Grass Valley, all over the bay area, as well as locally. They also came from many sports car clubs; European Motor Car Club, MG Owners Club, North Bay British Car Club, Marin Rallye Association, Sonoma County Mustang Club, Spyder Club, The Rally Club, and Z OWNERS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, plus 12 of the cars were from ESCA. Once again we got great weather for the event, which brought out many great looking sports cars to run, and the checkpoint cars were pretty nice also. And once again the start was in the Snoopy’s Home Ice Arena parking lot and the all-girl (meaning women) registration crew was ready to greet and help all the rallyists. Claudia Quinlivan, Marci Jenkins and Lilly Mugele handled registration, while Linda Jurin and Terry O’Connor handled the poker hand table. This year we had a switch at the rallye-school with Blain Hendrix and Gary O’Connor handling the duties, and a great job they did! Page 5 Then it was time to start sending out cars, with Blain Hendrix handling those duties, while Terry O’Connor got the release forms signed, and Frank Jurin recording the departure time of each car. Soon it was one o’clock and we had all 37 cars out on the course. The rallyists did a little in-town run before heading out Barnes Road to River and then out into the Larkfield area and continued on page 6 www.empiresportscar.org Rallye Fun in the Sun continued from page 5 out Faught Road to Windsor and out past Foothill Regional Park, which I’m told was a great place for a bathroom break. Then it was out Los Amigos to Limerick Lane and back down Old Redwood Highway to Eastside Road, which is very scenic. Then in Windsor-River Road to Starr Road and in through the Windsor Golf Course area and over to the Sonoma County Airport area, where they finally came to a checkpoint. At the Brickway checkpoint off Airport Blvd., the rallyists were greeted by Gerry & Lilly Mugele with their very nice blue TR4, Chuck Banks with his fast blue Pantera, and John Schliemann and friend, Susan Hee, with his burgundy Miata. At first, the checkpoint crew sat in the sun and waited for cars, but after a while they moved to a shady area as it had gotten too warm. They let the rallyist draw one card (if they were playing poker) and try to correctly answer a question, which no one did. The route then went south on Laughlin and crossed River (not an easy thing to do in the afternoon), onto Woolsey and then Wood Road where the instructions had them stop and check out a sign with a picture of a Cord motorcar and the number "1980" on it. At Fulton Road the gimmicks ended and the traverse to the finish started, which was in the back parking lot of the Marlow Center. There the rallyists were greeted by Blain Hendrix with his Mazda RX 7, Frank & Linda Jurin with their Mini, and Terry & Karen Larson with their racing Tesla. The finish checkpoint crew let the rallyists draw one more card to finish the poker hand, asked them the number on the sign the instruction told them to look at, took their score sheet, gave them a critique, and told them that the rallye was over and they could park their car and go into the pizza parlor, and eat pizza, drink, and watch a review of all the gimmicks on the big screen TV, while waiting to get their scores and for the awards to be handed out. Inside finish Marci, Claudia, and Karen did the scoring and posting, while Terry Larson went out and collected score continued on page 7 Page 6 www.empiresportscar.org Rallye Fun in the Sun continued from page 6 sheets from the checkpoint. Because of the smaller turn out and the ladies’ fast scoring, it was soon time to hand out the awards. Top-scoring ESCA member was Joe & Claudette Masters and daughter Carina, who took second place in Senior Class. In Beginner Class John Magnoli and navigator Tristan Benson took first, followed by David & Joshua Murphy who were second, Francia Camacho & Alex Ivakhnenko were third, and Greg & Angela Severson were fourth, and Donald Bamberg & Amber Geil were fifth. Just beating out Donald’s father and mother, John & JoAnn Bamberg who were seventh, and completing the class was Jim Johnson and navigator Jim Sexton who were ninth. In the First Timer Class Tyler Guevara and Thomas Re, took third place and Tyler also won the $10’s cash for best poker hand, while Dan & Tamara Woolever, took fifth place. In the Master Expert Class, where the race was to see who would get their name on the big trophy, third place went to a team that was running in the class for the first time, while second place went to the winner of the top spot for the last four years, both teams just one gimmick behind the overall winner, Phil Reichardt and Brent Sturtevant. If the last names sound familiar, that is because Phil is the son of John & Barbara Reichardt and Brent is the son of Dennis & Carol Sturdevant. All are past ESCA members. continued on page 9 Page 7 www.empiresportscar.org were asked to reserve July 25, 1965 for ESCA’s sanctioned autocross called ESCA A GO GO at Hamilton Air Force Base. 50Years Ago in Pit Stop May 1995 By Bob Jenkins This Pit Stop was a half April and all May affair as it was dated April 19th. The new editor, John J. Christensen, in a column informed the membership the Pit Stop was back. He thanked Dan Peterson for help, advice, and information. He also thanked Judy Gentry, Bev Stoddard, and Mr. & Mrs. Arack for contributing the month’s articles. In a General News article it was stated that the requirement for members under the age of 21 to be Junior Members was dropped from the ESCA By-Laws, but they could still not run for the office of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary or Treasurer. The Adventures of Otto Kross first appeared in this issue of Pit Stop. Otto Kross and his side kick Hubb Kapp would have many adventures. An April Fools Rallye article by Rallymasters Judy & Bev, talked about the event that started from the East end of the Coddingtown parking lot, at 1:00pm, and ended at Johnny & Reds on Summerfield Rd.. They stated the two route event was educational and covered historical points and ran to Sonoma and back. In all, 39 cars ran the event and Dan & Gerry Peterson took first place in the ESCA Class. A Destination Autocross article talked about a March weekend and the club’s first overnight stays in the bay area at the Edgewater Inn Motel in Oakland, to go run the Monaco Corvanna Autocross at Pleasanton. Attendees were George & Phylis Arack (MGA), Gary & Judy Gentry (Austin-Healy), Ian & Martha Cook (MG Midget), Don Eaton & Nancy Hill (TR-4), Terry Eaton (Porsche) and Dan & Gerry Peterson (Porsche). There was also a crossword puzzle with all things car. There was also a full page flyer for a blackboard session at the El Rancho Motel on Santa Rosa Avenue at the ESCA Regular meeting to get ready for ESCA to run it’s first ever autocross. The site was to be held at the U.S Naval Airport off Finley Ave in Santa Rosa.
