Well known as a legendary blues man from Portland, OR he plays harmonica and fronts his own band as lead vocalist. Salgado has been nominated for four of the Blues Foundation’s 2009 National Blues Awards, including Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for his album, Clean Getaway. In 2010, Salgado won the Foundation's Male Artist of the Year award. Curtis Salgado grew up in Eugene, Ore. listening to jazz, and to his father, an aspiring singer of classical music. His ambitions coalesced when, at age 12, he saw Count Basie’s band perform. Curtis became a part of the burgeoning Northwest blues scene, eventually hooking up with up-and-coming guitarist/ vocalist Robert Cray. The pair recorded the album Who’s Been Talking. Salgado also sat in with the likes of Muddy Waters, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins and Bonnie Raitt. Aside from being a tremendous vocalist, Curtis is one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. In 1979, when John Belushi was filming Animal House, he caught Curtis’ act and liked what he heard. Curtis took the actor under his wing and schooled him on blues Hillstomp history, which Belushi soaked up like a sponge. He used a good portion of Salgado’s show as the basis for the Blues Brothers act he and Dan Akroyd put together. The first Blues Brothers album was dedicated to Curtis. From 1984 to 1986, Salgado fronted Boston’s Grammy-winning "Roomful Of Blues" before returning to Portland where he formed The Stilettos, who toured nationally with such acts as Steve Miller and The Doobie Brothers. He even did a stint as lead vocalist with Santana in the 1990’s. After three critically- acclaimed solo albums with Shanachie Entertainment, Clean Getaway may be the breakthrough that Curtis has been working toward. Hillstomp will get Haines stompin’ when this Portland, OR junkbox blues duo takes the stage. Infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, Hillstomp recycles traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country music. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works. Despite their homemade instruments and novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act. Don’t expect your feet to get any rest, because these guys are gonna keep your feet stompin’ all weekend long! The .357 String Band Forgoing drums and using only s t r i n g e d instruments (and the occasional megaphone), The .357 String Band plays with all the fire and fury of Rock & Roll. Anything but derivative, The .357 String Band pays homage to both the dark roots of Americana - the fatalistic murder ballads, sneering Outlaw Country and unforgiving Gospel - as well as their own background coming of age in Milwaukee’s Punk and Rockabilly scenes. The result is a faster, meaner folk music something the band calls “Streetgrass.” Impossible to pin down to any one genre, The .357 String Band See next page Supporting Excellent Main Stage Entertainment and Celebrating Southeast Alaska Alaska Cruise Association · 360 K Street, Suite 300 · Anchorage, AK 99501 (907) 743-4529 · (907) 743-4553 fax · www.akcruise.org Proud sponsor • RENTAL CARS of the Logging Show 3.5 mile Lutak Rd • (907) 766-3713 • Suites • Rooms • Cabins Performers continued have won accolades from fans of many different Dare to walk the line between fate and free will styles of music - completely at home sharing the and join The .357 String Band at their Friday and stage with a punk band in a dive bar, they were also Saturday performances. voted “Best Country” by the Claude Hay is very excited to Shepherd Express’ People’s Choice be visiting Alaska and satisfying Awards in 2007, “Best Alt-Country” your cravings for some amazing in 2009, as well as winning “Best booty-shaking tunes! See next page Performers second album Deep Fried Satisfied, Claude debuted on the Billboard Blues charts at #9. Claude Hay fuses slide guitar, sitar, bass and electronic percussion in a loop-driven performance that invokes the best of stomping traditional blues with a booty-shaking funk edge. His fresh take on roots and blues draws in a wide spectrum of listeners, but still has the chops for the blues enthusiasts. In 2007, his first independently released debut album Kiss The Sky was the ticket he needed to perform at venues and festivals all over the world. Claude Hay His new release, Deep Fried Satisfied, showcases Claude as the ultimate DIY musician, honing his craft with hook-laden song writing and undeniable talent. And speaking of DIY, don’t miss Claude’s workshop on Saturday afternoon. Pressha is one of the most versatile DJs in the Pacific Northwest and throws down a wild variety of continued sick beats with impeccable mixing skills, from techno to hip-hop to dubstep to breaks to electro house to drum and bass to glitch and mid-tempo. Immersed in the party and responsive to the desires of his audience, Pressha loves to create a scorching dance floor riot, and you will find him in clubs all over Seattle having as much fun as the dancers getting down to his blazing beats. An active member of the Burning Man community, Pressha’s exposure to the slower tempos and world music sounds of the festival has created in him a driving passion for sharing the beat-centric, glitchhop sound that is sweeping the West Coast. Expand your musical horizons…we know Haines is ready. Come party with Pressha on Friday night! Traveler A multi-cultural musical experience fusing Gypsy, Middle Eastern, Celtic, Greek and Turkish See next page Proud Sponsor of Main Stage Entertainment at the Southeast Alaska State Fair Proud to sponsor ribbons for exhibit winners at the 2011 Southeast Alaska State Fair Performers styles with rock. Traveler’s sound is an innovative, new fusion of world music and rock. Using traditional ethnic instruments combined with all the power of a full blown rock band, their performances are intense, exotic and adrenaline-driven. The real magic of a Traveler show is in the connection they make with the audience. They give a high energy, passionate performance that draws the audience in. People are always moved to their feet and drawn closer to the stage to be part of the experience. Scott Jeffers is composer and band leader. His Lebanese heritage and American upbringing has inspired his vision to fuse elements of ancient ethnic music with rock. He has traveled extensively through foreign lands to gather inspiration for the Traveler project. Composing most of his songs while surrounded by the people, sounds, sights, smells and landscape of these faraway places brings a true authenticity to the fusion. Known for his fiery and passionate violin and vocal performances, Scott’s commanding presence onstage adds to the trademark power of the live Traveler shows. He also brings traditional instruments from his journeys to the stage: Bouzouki,a traditional Greek stringed instrument, and an Arabic Oud, an ancient predecessor to the guitar. Seeing this group live is a truly rich and wonderful experience to be enjoyed by the whole family. continued Deering & Down pair sturdy, sweet female vocals with clang-and-twang guitar textures. One can imagine the rich vocals, reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Margo Timmins of the “Cowboy Junkies,” paired with classic strings of Ike Turner, Keith Richards and Hubert Sumlin. Had Deering and Down only been looking for the most expedient route to stardom, they most likely would have never set up headquarters in a small town in Alaska. As fate would have it, at the age of 16, Canadian-born Lahna Deering found her way up north, where she met and befriended rock and roll journeyman Rev. Neil Down. Based in the town of 300 residents, Deering and Down wrapped up a winter’s worth of work even further north at remote studio in the Yukon Territory. There they recorded their first album together, “Coupe de Villa.” Now headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., Deering & Down are back in the North to get you groovin’ and shakin’. Flamebuoyant Productions, Inc. With more than 11 years of experience across the U.S. and abroad, Portland, OR-based group Flamebuoyant will amaze you with their high impact, spectacular circus-style performance. They will fill the fairgrounds with stilts, acrobatics, clowns and, of See next page Performers course, mesmerize you with their amazing feats with fire. And don’t miss their kid-friendly acrobatic workshop on Sunday. Sasquatch Prom Date When Ryan McNally waltzed into Whitehorse sporting a pompadour, Genesee Keevil threw on her prom dress and Sasquatch Prom Date took the stage.Their jumpin’ tunes appeal to everyone from underage punkers to elderly grandparents reminiscing about poodle skirts and saddle shoes. The band’s oldtime rockabilly jive comes alive with retro guitars, ribbon mics and Keevil’s 1950s upright bass. Vocal yelps, walking basslines, a groovy backbeat and scorching guitar riffs evoke images of drag strip races, Flamebuoyant beehive hairdos and soda fountains. The music has a catchy simplicity with a psychobilly undercurrent. Open the frosty bar door at 40 below and the sudden onslaught of ’50s rockabilly draws even the most reticent woolly bushmen onto the dance floor. Fans have started coming to performances dressed for the prom. It’s hard-driving, sweaty rockabilly all night long. Nicole Edwards and the Joy Seekers “Yukon's Folk Rock Diva” returns to Haines for another stellar performance with the Joy Seekers. From singer to songwriter to band leader to composer, arranger, producer, guitarist and bassist, Dave Haddock is one of the most in demand players and continued collaborators in Whitehorse and brings his great love and talent for music to every project in which he’s involved. Nicole’s ability to sink her voice to the low end of the musical register and rocket it back up to the top of the scale, represents the gorgeous, poignant, and frolicking range of her musical wanderings. Together with the Joy Seekers, they are sure to draw you in, rock you out, and speak your heart. Don’t miss Nicole and Annie Avery’s gospel Sunday and workshops throughout the weekend. Susan Grace started singing as a young girl. She started playing around the Detroit area at local coffeehouses in the early 70’s performing folk and traditional music on guitar and banjo. Performing in Michigan and the Midwest, she has shared programs with See next page Performers such artists as Josh White Jr., Claudia Schmidt, Sally Rogers, Joel Mabus, Pop Wagner, Mary McCaslin and Jim Ringer, and Robin and Linda Williams. Performing with guitar, banjo and fiddle, Susan developed a program entitled “Michigan through Story and Songs.” This show took an educational and entertaining look at Michigan’s his- Sasquatch Prom Date tory. She also performed with Jan Pavlinak of the Ruffwater String Band, and both danced and taught with the Great Lakes Clogging Company. In 1985 after moving to Alaska Susan began to write more of her own songs inspired by the wilderness that surrounds her. Making Fairbanks home, she has dedicated her time working and volunteer- continued ing for many environmental and educational non profits, as well as making music! Susan performs solo and also with the band “Outlaw Women.” Susan Grace is also an educator who has worked with youth and adults for over 30 years. Susan’s passion for nature education and music are a delightful blend. It’s a pleasure to have Susan back in Haines. Be sure to participate in one of her weekend workshops. Onward, etc. is a musical project put together by Rosco Wuestewald. Rosco is a 24year-old traveling artist with a soul as old as his boots. He started playing music around the age of 14, left home at 17, and found himself tangled up with the road. Having traveled with his music throughout the U.S. and Europe, he decided to throw his all into Onward, etc. The idea behind this project is to form groups of musicians all around the country so to be See next page Performers able to tour and have a unique performance each time they step on stage, depending on where that stage is planted. If you are listening to Onward, etc. in a pub in NYC, an outdoor venue in Hawaii or an old brothel in Alaska you will hear songs written about love, travel and the dangers of life to a great sound influenced by the likes of Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, Blind Pilot, Sea Wolf, The Devil Makes Three, Delta Spirit and many more. Now he is just a regular human being and has been living in northwestern Alaska for the past couple of years. His shows are full of true tall tales and passionate songs on the guitar, mandolin, and banjo. Selina At just 14, Selina Heyligers-Hare is becoming a familiar face on Whitehorse stages. She has been singing harmonies with her mom for several years, and performs in the group “The Blue Grass Babes.” Besides her wonderful singing she plays guitar, piano, and clarinet. Lately she has stepped out, doing shows on her own. She was recently heard at a Yukon Women in Music concert and competed solo in “The Battle of the Bands” at Frostbite Music Festival. In 2011, you’ll see HFR’s new recycling containers marked for #1 plastics and aluminum, and composting containers for food waste and compostable service ware (plates, cups, and silverware) in the center of the Food Vendor area. HFR worked with food vendors to encourage them to purchase compostable products for food service. Ask vendors if you aren’t sure if their service ware can be composted. HFR sends aluminum and #1 plastics to a center that processes them for reuse. Food and compostable serviceware compost in bins, quickly breaking down into rich, dark soil.
