NATIONAL FREESTYLE SKI TEAM 2009-2010 MEDIA GUIDE CANADA POST FROM MESSAGE This is an incredibly exciting year for Canada, for the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association (CFSA) and for Canada Post. With the eyes of the world on Vancouver in 2010 we all have a chance to show our common goals of excellence, dedication and commitment. As a proud partner of the CFSA and an Official Supplier to the Games, Canada Post and its employees will be front and centre for all the festivities and celebrations this season will bring. Last year, the Canada Post Freestyle Team was once again number one on the FIS Freestyle circuit. After winning the prestigious Nations Cup for the past four years, it's clear that these elite athletes continue to train smart and work hard in their drive to make Canadians proud in 2010. This is this same dedication seen on a daily basis in our employees across the country; a genuine desire to work harder and better meet our customers' needs. Canada Post offers national and local support for hundreds of charities including those associated with literacy and our cause of choice, mental health; good investments in the communities we live and work in. We continue to build on our investment that Canada Post began four years ago with the CFSA. Canada Post provides essential funding for the training activities of more than 2,000 freestyle skiers in Canada, from beginners in our Freestyle Frenzy programs, to elite athletes headed for international podiums. Now in our fourth year as the title sponsor of the team, Canada Post remains committed to each athlete, to this team and to this dynamic sport. I wish Canada's Freestyle athletes a golden 2009/2010 season! Stewart Bacon Chief Sales and Marketing Officer 01 CFSA FROM MESSAGE The Olympic Games are the predominant quest in an athlete's career. Earning the honour to don the maple leaf and represent Canada at the Games is only achieved by a few. Fewer still will create the path that will lead them to ascend an Olympic podium or ultimately hear the Canadian anthem played in tribute to their accomplishment. Achieving ANY of these things on one's home soil is the ultimate privilege, honour and experience. Of the two previous Games hosted in Canada, to date NO Canadian athlete has ever won Olympic Gold on home soil. That will change in 2010 – and Canadian Freestyle athletes are set to make it happen. our programming by continuing to generously support us despite the current challenging economic climate. Their dedication has created an environment where our national level athletes have the support they need to excel in competition; where coaches have important resources at their fingertips; and, where local clubs receive training and infrastructure support so they can provide first class programming for young athletes. As much as the games provide an opportunity for top athletes to showcase their sport to the world, more importantly, through success and good planning, they provide the forum to breathe new life into the sport, to launch the next generation propelling them to even greater success. Given the initiatives we have created through the collaborative undertakings with our PSO partners, and programs like the Canada Post Freestyle Frenzy Series, RBC Jumps & Bumps, and federal government assistance focused on growth and capacity, we feel well prepared to find and develop that next generation. Ten years ago the 2010 Winter Olympic Games were just a dream, and just over six years ago they became a reality. Now we have just over 100 days until the Olympic flame is ignited on Canadian soil and the eyes of the world are upon us. During this time a quiet shift has taken place, a shift in thinking that was precipitated by an audacious notion – that Canada COULD lead the world in winter sports. The Own The Podium project has created unprecedented focus, clarity, innovation, commitment and collaboration not seen before in This February in Vancouver, Canada's freestyle Canadian sport. athletes will have the opportunity to shine and their success will highlight the behind the scenes CFSA has been the beneficiary of this paradigm commitment of our partners, volunteers, support shift and we have seen this same commitment to staff and the Canadian public. Everyone who skis has had to negotiate bumps or moguls at some point and knows how challenging they can be. The incredible skill, athleticism and courage of the world’s top mogul skiers makes it look easy, as they race straight down the fall line at lightning speeds. The top skiers are covering as many as four moguls per second! Head to head action ... In Dual Moguls, competitors race head-tohead in knock-out rounds. The added adrenaline of racing side-by-side means skiers often push themselves beyond their limits, resulting in either spectacular crashes or some of the most awesome bump skiing you will ever see. Results from the Dual Moguls competitions on the FIS World Cup tour are combined with Single Moguls results to determine the overall World Cup Mogul Champion at the end of each year. The Course Length is between 200 and 270 metres with an average grade of 26 degrees. Moguls are set approximately 3.5 metres apart. The course includes two small jumps which are used as a take-off for aerials. Judging Competitors rip down the mogul course and launch themselves off two jumps on the way down under scrutiny of a panel of seven judges. Marks are awarded for the technical quality of the skier’s turns (50%), the two aerial manoeuvres (25%) and speed (25%). While speed is a factor, the fastest skier across the finish line does not necessarily win. Competition Format Qualifying round with a single descent, followed by a final featuring the top 12 or 16 from the first round. Only scores from the final run count for final results. Judging A panel of seven judges award marks: four judges score the turns, two judges score the air (jumps), and one judge scores the speed. Each judge has five “votes” which can be allocated between the two skiers according to the course colour they have skied in (i.e. 5 Blue/0 Red, 4 Blue/1 Red, etc). Those votes are added up to total of 35 with a majority of 18 being needed to move on to the next round or win. Competition Format Competitions are either: a) Single run qualification round (as per single Moguls) to seed the Duals, which would usually be sixteen pairs of Duals or; b) Elimination rounds of the entire field of competitors based on seeding from either the results of a prior Dual competition or a prior Single Moguls competition. LINGO ? Daffy : Splits — legs are widely spread, one in front, one behind. Front ski tip up, back ski tip down, with skis parallel. ? Iron cross : Ski tips cross as skier remains upright. Tips drop, but heels are kicked to either side. ? Spread Eagle/Spread : Starting position for making snow angels : arms extended and legs split, usually 90 degrees or more to the side. ? Twister : Skis twist 90 degrees to one side of the body, while hands and arms may counter the twisting skis — with core of body remaining upright and facing down the hill. ? 360 : Upright aerial spin of 360 degrees often called a helicopter or chopper. 720 = Double helicopter. ? Mute Grab : 360 with an Iron Cross Back Scratcher in the middle (often referred to as a “Heli-Mute”). ? Off-axis : A true flip is one that turns around the horizontal (zero degree) axis. A true spin is one that turns around the vertical (90 degree) one. An off-axis spin or flip is one that deviates from these norms. ? D Spin : A back flip with an off-axis full twist. ? Back full : A back flip with a full twist both true to the ‘normal’ axis. ? Lincoln Loop : Old school turned new school — a sideways flip. ? Grab : Any part of the ski or binding that is grabbed by the hand — there are Tail, Mute, Japan and Toxic grabs in addition to a whole mess of others, all which add flavour to the tricks. ? Rodeo : Backwards initiated off-axis flip ? Flat Spin : Another off-axis trick, where the skier looks like they are spinning like a horizontal wheel. ? Misty : Forward-initiated off-axis flip. ? Cork 720 : Two rotations as if spinning in a frontal wheel. ? Switch : Taking off a jump backwards. ? Fakie : Landing backwards. 08 Y A D O T . F O MOGUL STARS MEN The Canadians Canada's male mogul skiers took the world by storm last season, with Alex Bilodeau, Vincent Marquis and Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau sweeping the World Cup podium twice – at Ski Mt. Gabriel in Quebec and in Are, Sweden – only the second team to do this in Freestyle World Cup history. They also took three of the top four places in the FIS Grand Prix last year. Bilodeau, the FIS Freestyle World Cup Moguls, FIS Overall Champion and dual moguls World Champion was on fire last season, winning an astounding eight World Cup medals in nine starts (five of them gold). He is certainly one to watch in 2010, but he will have competition from his teammates. Vince Marquis earned a World Championship bronze medal last year and finished the season third overall in the mogul standings for the second straight season. Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau, team veteran and 2007 World Champion rounds out this formidable trio. 'P-A' shows week in and week out that he is capable of winning, and that the Olympic podium that's eluded him over his 14-year national team career is more than just a possibility. But these three Canadian hotshots will have to stay on their toes to remain on top of the Canadian field as the team has very deep roots. WOMEN Dale Begg-Smith, AUS 2006 Olympic Champion, 2006, 2007 and 2008 FIS World Cup Champion and 2007 World Championship silver medallist; Begg-Smith has been a dominant figure on the FIS World Cup circuit. Forced out of competition last season with a knee injury, it will be interesting to watch his 2010 comeback. Jenn Heil, Canada The 2006 Olympic champion came back strong last season after taking a year off competing to rebuild her stance. Her performance last season was enough to secure her one of only three provisional freestyle spots to the Vancouver 2010 Games, where she'll compete at Cypress, on the same course she won gold on in 2009. Watch for him this season. 09 AERIALS LEXICON ON Aerials Olympic discipline Aerials is not for the faint of heart. At the national team level, competitors hit the jumps, or 'kickers', at speeds of 60+ km/h, launch themselves some 20 metres in the air and perform up to three back somersaults with up to five twists, landing on a steep landing hill most people would be nervous just skiing. These are the most difficult manoeuvres performed in any 'gymnastic' sport. Judging Competitors must perform two different jumps consisting of single or multiple somersaults with or without twists. Each jump must vary by one somersault or one twist. Points are awarded for takeoff (20% of score), form in the air (50% of score) and landing (30% of score). Scores of both jumps are added together for a final mark. Competition Format Competitions usually include a qualification round and a final round with one or two jumps in each. The exact format for each event is determined by FIS and the event organizing committee. F O AERIAL STARS MEN WOMEN The Canadians Deep and talented – 2009 FIS World Cup Aerial champion Steve Omischl leads a team that should continue to threaten the podium each and every week. Omischl was 2nd at the World Championships last year and teammate Warren Shouldice finished 3rd. Kyle Nissen was 4th in the World Cup standings. These three men, rounded out with Ryan Blais and last year's FIS Rookie of the Year, Olivier Rochon, make the Canadians a team that are tough to beat. Nina Li, CHN The reigning and three-time World Champion (2009, 2007 and 2005) Li was second overall in the FIS women's aerial standings for 2009. She and her teammates including Mengtao Xu, who placed second at the World Championships have overtaken the Aussies as the deepest team on the World Cup. Li was second at the Olympics in 2006, and she is definitely one to watch in 2010. This eventually evolved into skate-specific halfpipe so the athletes could “drop in” (start off on the lip of the pipe). Skateboarding moved over to the white waves when the snowboard was perfected and the boarders decided they wanted to bring what they had perfected on concrete over to the snow. To make a long story short, the skiers saw the boarders flying off these frozen sculpted terrain parks and felt the desire to go higher. And voila! A new discipline was born. In competition judged on: the athletes are The Pipe Specs (Average) Amplitude (how high they fly out of the pipe): Twenty percent of total score Length: 150 meters Slope: 16 degrees Vertical incline: 83 degrees Width: 18 meters DD (the degree of difficulty of the tricks): Twenty percent of total score Execution (how well the athletes perform said tricks): Twenty percent of total score Overall (the whole package): Forty percent of total score The basic DD equates to the number of spins or flips done in the trick but the “total package” includes the grabs and As the sport has evolved, so have the positions (personality and style) that tricks. Ski Cross made its debut at the X Games when a bunch of skiers who saw the debut of Boarder Cross a couple of years earlier said, “I want to do that but on skis!” Skis have less surface area than snowboards, which, in turn, means less resistance on the snow which (getting all the physics out of the way) means MORE SPEED! vying for the “hole shot” (or being in first place as they come into the first turn). Races can be won or lost here and it is a simple blend of the right wax, an incredible burst of energy, and perhaps a tactical placement of pole or ski that gets them there.
