MAINSBRIDGE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER www.mainsbridgeschool.com.au 5th August, 2016 Week 3 Term 3 2016 CALENDAR 1st September – Father’s Day stall Dear Parents/Carers, Thank you to those families who were able to visit our school today and celebrate Education Week with us. I am glad you were able to participate with your child in the weekly sports program as well as view the beautiful Olympic poster displays in the hallway and meeting room. I would also like thank you for your kind book donations to our school library. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. I apologise for not being at school today to share this time with you and your children. I had the first day of mandatory training with the Department of Education for the new finance system which will be implemented in NSW Public Schools in the coming months. In regards to this new finance system, there will be a transition time when payments to the school cannot be made. Please read the “Important Information” on the last page of this newsletter https://myemail.det.nsw.edu.au/owa/# regarding temporary block out times for payments. 5th September – School Photos Envelopes will go home soon Our Education Week artwork displays On the last day of the school holidays, Ms Jasmin Nand was offered a permanent teaching position at a primary school. These positions are frequently offered to temporary or casual teachers when their application for permanency is next in line for appointment. As a principal I have no control over this situation as this procedure is part of the Department of Education’s Employment Policy. In saying that, I would like to welcome two new temporary teachers this term, Mr George Bawtree and Ms Nicola Dodsworth who will be teaching high school classes. Until next time, Marienne McLean Principal 1 The infants’ classes are happy to be back at school and are eager to participate in their daily learning activities such as Sport, Sensory and Soft Play Programs. Music Therapy continues to motivate our students and bring out their hidden potential as they engage at their own level in music with percussion instruments and through dance. The students have fun with their learning and respond enthusiastically using body movement and vocalisations. Within the classrooms, students have explored exciting topics through art, cooking, play and technology. DK Diamonds and SH Pearls have been focusing on the topic “Under the Sea” and exploring sea creatures and their habitats. NK Rollers have been focusing on “Aboriginal Australia” and looking at Aboriginal culture and traditions. 2016's Education Week theme is ‘Sport - It’s Fun to Participate’. All of the infants’ classes have created artworks to celebrate the Olympic Games and sporting events which they take part in during school. Until next time Regards Infants staff 2 The Primary classes are ready to tackle Term 3 and are looking forward to being involved in all the exciting learning experiences. The focus for the classes this term is Musical Culture, Ocean Life and Aboriginal Australia. Each class will experience different aspects of the theme they are looking at. Students participate in Musical Culture by exploring ways in which objects make sounds and how they can make musical instruments. Ocean Life is about exploring the oceanic environment including marine animals, recreational sports, coastal industries and the beach community. Students involved in the theme Aboriginal Australia investigate the culture and traditions of indigenous Australia. Paying attention to art, music, food and festivities. Luke is learning about the colours of the ocean Danial is making a beach themed colour palette The students spend time everyday learning about and reinforcing the school rules. The first five weeks of the term the primary students will focus on the school rule Listen. Activities to strengthen the student’s understanding of the Listen rule will include stories, music, games and videos. Anthony is demonstrating listening skills by looking at the activity, following directions and sitting safely in the chair. Students learn about the school rules in class, on the playground and on transport. We encourage the parents to reinforce these rules at home to consolidate learning. If you would like a copy of the rules and the type of language the staff use at Mainsbridge please ask your child’s teacher for a copy. Kind regards from the Primary staff 3 Hi everyone, A warm welcome to a fun-filled, activity rich Term 3! We have launched into Semester 2 with a bang. As the whole world eagerly awaits the start of Olympics, some High School classes will have the opportunity to investigate the similarities and differences of the ancient and modern Olympic Games as the premier World Event. They will explore ancient and modern sports included in the games and the significant sporting achievements over time. Year 7 and 8 will explore the early inhabitants of planet Earth including prehistoric animals and dinosaurs. They will use a variety of skills to find out about prehistoric earth and its inhabitants. Years 9 and 10 will be exploring the topic ‘Ancient Egyptian world': How it is the same and different from that of today. They will learn about how people lived, the ancient society, housing, foods, clothing, writing, recreation, etc. Artwork displayed in various classrooms As sustainability is now a priority worldwide, we have launched an environment project to create awareness among students about removal and responsible disposal of waste. To educate students and increase their level of awareness, we are going to include recycling as a part of everyday practice, discuss sustainable practices with the children and families and use worm composting bins to reduce food waste. The environment committee consisting of teachers and students will undertake recycling of resources and vermicomposting of organic waste. Our compost bins Artwork displays for Education Week This week, our school celebrated Education week. The theme for Education week was “Sport-it’s fun to participate”. Each class had expressed their ideas on sports through artwork. Parents came to view the displayed work and also witness their children participate in the sporting events. They also took this opportunity to donate a book to the school library. We really appreciate the parents for their continued support.
