This year is no exception, except that my thoughts are more focused on the future. As construction of Rainforest of the Americas—the last major project of the first phase of our Master Plan— nears completion, we are working behind the scenes to create a vision for what the Zoo will look like in the future—which species are in need of new habitats, which programs or services can be improved, how can we reimagine the Zoo to better meet the needs of our guests and the animals in our care? Many of the animal acquisitions that have occurred during the past year—including a new harpy eagle, a matamata turtle, cotton-top tamarins, marine toads, and dozens of red-bellied piranha—were made in anticipation of the Rainforest exhibit. Another notable newcomer, the southern hairy-nosed wombat, remains off-exhibit while plans are made to reopen the Australia House to the public. More than 20 years have passed since the Zoo has had wombats in residence, and we look forward to announcing his Zoo debut in the coming months. Several important births occurred—including seven peninsular pronghorn, a southern pudu, a tufted deer, and a Cape griffon vulture—allowing the Zoo to maintain breeding populations today of species that will be at risk in the wild tomorrow. The Zoo furthered our global commitments invol ving endangered species, funding more than 30 field research and conservation projects, including the Philippine Eagle Conservation Program, and Paso Pacifico, which has been working to preserve the last populations of jaguars remaining in western Nicaragua. Closer to home, we supported a survey of squirrels and other species inhabiting Griffith Park. TAD MOTOYAMA E ZOO FRIENDS CHARLIE MOREY Dear G Primatologist Jane Goodall was among the distinguished guests who visited the Zoo last year. Throughout the year our staff members attended conferences and workshops on practically every continent, sharing their own knowledge and bringing back insights from others working in the zoological profession. We hosted conferences and a series of lectures by distinguished biologists, among them Susie Ellis of the International Rhino Foundation, Bill Robichaud of the Saola Working Group, and Roland Wirth of the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations. And our friend Jane Goodall stopped by to visit our chimps and film a segment for the DVD release of the Disney documentary Chimpanzee. We hope you will continue to be a part of all of the excitement that’s in store for you at the Los Angeles Zoo. John R. Lewis, Los Angeles Zoo Director Dear ZOO FRIENDS TOM NORD JAMIE PHAM T he 2012–2013 fiscal year represented a wave of change as we began to wrap up the Zoo’s current Master Plan and turned our attention toward the future. With the upcoming opening of Rainforest of the Americas, the Zoo will have completed 10 major capital projects in these last 15 years. In addition to funding many of these projects, during this timeframe GLAZA also undertook a series of concessions and retail renovations on behalf of the Zoo, created a new concessions master plan, built the Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel, and funded construction of the new Angela Collier World of Birds Show Theater. The landscape of the Zoo is indeed vastly different than it was in the early 1990s. In this past year, GLAZA concentrated on wrapping up many of its commitments to this current phase of the Zoo’s development, raising more than $8 million in contributions and grants to support operations, programming, and capital projects. Several major gifts have made it possible for us to arrive at a plan to retire our $20 million-plus commitment to Elephants of Asia in the next three years, far in advance of projections. We were thrilled when this centerpiece of the Zoo received a Significant Achievement Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums last year. We also com- H Zoo members enjoyed a diverse pleted funding for the series of special events this year, carousel and gifted including Twilight at the Zoo. it to the City of Los Angeles. It is now time to G Concessions and retail renovations were among the changes to the Zoo’s landscape in recent years. look at our “house” with a fresh eye to determine the next steps in the Zoo’s development. We are delighted to be working with our Zoo colleagues in envisioning what the Los Angeles Zoo of the future can be—and helping to bring a range of new plans to fruition for the benefit of the animals and the community. A great strength of the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is that it is a zoo for all. We are dedicated to ensuring that it continues to be affordable while providing an ever more dynamic experience that nurtures wildlife and enriches the human experience. TAD MOTOYAMA H A female southern pudu was born in April. This was a very significant birth for the captive population of southern pudu, which has been declining over the years. JAMIE PHAM TAD MOTOYAMA PHOTO COURTESY OF NICKI PIEPERS JAMIE PHAM H E Two Cape griffon vultures hatched this year, raising the total number of this species hatched at the Zoo to 18. G Animal Keeper Nicki Piepers spent two weeks at the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in South Africa, a trip funded by GLAZA’s Sloan Animal Keeper Advanced Studies Grant. 4 CHARLIE MOREY E The yellow-backed duiker is rare in zoological collections. In August 2012, the Los Angeles and San Diego zoos transferred a total of three yellow-backed duikers to the Wuppertal Zoo in Germany as part of a collaborative effort to manage the species globally. Z OO V IEW • W INTER G On January 25, the Zoo received a Meller’s chameleon (also known as the giant one-horned chameleon) that was confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The lizard originated in Mozambique. Z OO V IEW • W INTER TAD MOTOYAMA TAD MOTOYAMA JAMIE PHAM TAD MOTOYAMA CHARLIE MOREY In December 2012, the Zoo received a male koala from the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, providing new genetics to the colony. In March, a female koala arrived from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. A koala joey was born in May. G Two Japanese serow arrived, reestablishing the species at the L.A. Zoo after an 18-month absence. Only three other North American zoos exhibit this declining species. The Zoo funded the first study of the illegal trade of serow in Southeast Asia. G A violaceous turaco, Ross’s turaco, Bali mynah, black-crowned crane, and keel-billed toucan (pictured), all joined the Zoo’s avian assemblage. G In January, the Zoo celebrated the birth of a male Sichuan takin—the third takin birth at the Zoo since the Zoo began working with the species in 2007. 5 ANIMALS 12 13 ANNUALREPORT and CONSERVATION F With fewer than 25 individuals remaining in the wild, the birth of seven peninsular pronghorn fawns in April was a milestone for the species’ survival. The Zoo has been working with Espacios Naturales and other organizations to help prevent the extinction of this species. H E A male desert bighorn sheep was born in May. Found in our local San Gabriel Mountains, the desert bighorn sheep is a managed species in captivity. Several populations in the wild are in decline and under threat. CHARLIE MOREY MARLOWE ROBERTSON TAD MOTOYAMA TAD MOTOYAMA H A team of biologists that included L.A. Zoo Keepers Marlowe Robertson and Byron Wusstig released two groups of captive-bred mountain yellow-legged frogs—a giant leap forward in the effort to reestablish this vanishing species. Here, a transmitter is attached to an L.A. Zoo-reared frog Zoo prior to release. G A tammar wallaby joey was born in January. TAD MOTOYAMA E Non-releasable due to a wing injury, California condor Dolly was named the nation’s first official ambassador for her species. 6 Z OO V IEW • W INTER G New exhibits always generate buzz, but the debut of the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles) also spurred hisses, rattles, and croaks! F F Many of the year’s animal arrivals are ultimately destined for the Rainforest of the Americas exhibit, including a breeding pair of lowland paca, a large rodent that is widespread throughout Central and South America but rarely seen in zoos. 7 EDUCATION 12 13 ANNUALREPORT and VOLUNTEERS F Our dedicated corps of more than 600 volunteers logged 81,266 hours of service last year. From special events to giving tours and greeting guests, volunteers play a vital role in fulfilling the Zoo’s mission. EDUCATION DIVISION EDUCATION DIVISION TAD MOTOYAMA H Muriel’s Ranch was visited by 316,300 guests last year. At the contact yard, Education Specialists work alongside Animal Care staff and specially trained volunteers to facilitate animal interactions. G Since 2010, Education Curator Sean den Bok has served on the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Diversity Committee, working to promote diversity—not only among staff and volunteers but also externally with Zoo guests, vendors, and other partners. 8 GEORGE STONEMAN E In October, the Los Angeles Zoo hosted the annual conference of the Association of Zoo and Aquarium Docents, which drew more than 600 attendees from as far away as Australia for a week of educational presentations, nature excursions, and social events. Z OO V IEW • W INTER TAD MOTOYAMA F A docent-led Bat Walk drew more than 150 members out on an August evening to search for bats and learn about the important role they play in our ecosystem. TIM KNAUFF TAD MOTOYAMA G Education Specialists deliver daily presentations about the special care our elephants receive. More than 101,000 guests attended these talks last year, learning firsthand how zookeepers use positive reinforcement to build bonds with our animals and keep them healthy and safe. E Bottle-feeding orphaned manatees was a highlight for the students on this year’s Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Field Study Team, which ventured on a riverboat down the Peruvian Amazon to study South American species. E E The Docent Conservation Committee took their message on the road with educational displays at the Natural History Museum’s Reptile and Amphibian Appreciation Day, Water Day at the Skirball Cultural Center, and other community events. Z OO V IEW • W INTER DUTTENHAVER FIELD STUDY TEAM TOM NORD G In September 2012, the Zoo debuted a new behind-thescenes opportunity, Indian Rhino Encounters, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Education, Admissions, and Animal Care. Education Specialists greet and prepare guests for their experience and answer questions about the rhinoceros. 9 EVENTS 12 13 ANNUALREPORT and COMMUNITY F Sumatran tigers and several other species were treated to a flurry of fun during Snow Days at the L.A. Zoo. KIRIN DAUGHARTY H E Celebrating our largest residents, Elephant Awareness Weekend offered talks, tours, and tons of fun. For each coloring page collected, a donation was made to elephant conservation. TAD MOTOYAMA GEORGE STONEMAN TAD MOTOYAMA TAD MOTOYAMA H Fire prevention was a hot topic at Safety Safari, featuring Smokey Bear and other special guests. G Zoo Director John Lewis previewed the forthcoming giant otter habitat for guests at an exclusive Safari Club event in October.
