Legion - Tristel
Legion
Disinfecting and descaling
solutions for sanitary fittings
Legion is a Tristel range of dual action
disinfectant descalers. Available in a foam
and gel, Legion removes limescale and
biofilm from sanitary fittings and is
bactericidal and yeasticidal in only 5
minutes. Legion is part of an effective
Legionella control regime in accordance with
L8 Approved Code of Practice (ACOP).
Why choose Legion?
In accordance with L8 Approved Code of Practice
Legion is designed to meet L8 Approved Code of Practice
(ACOP) regulations as published by the Health and Safety
Executive, Great Britain.
L8 regulations state that sanitary fittings, such as shower
heads, should be descaled and disinfected on a regular
basis and that the chemical removal of limescale should be
combined with disinfection of the area. This procedure is an
integral part of a wider regime for control and prevention of
Legionnaires’ disease.
Increased compliance at little cost
The use of one product that can descale as well as disinfect
leads to both cost savings and improved compliance. The
need for staff training on use of a variety of different products
is minimised and safety risks are reduced as staff only handle
one chemical product instead of two.
Legion helps Facilities Management and Health & Safety
teams to ensure compliance with L8. Compliance can now be
achieved in a simple, effective and easy to manage way.
For use as a deep clean and as a daily cleaning regime
Legion is used for immediate removal of visible deposits of
limescale and biofilm and, when used regularly, prevents
re-growth. Legion’s excellent biocidal properties ensure that
the surfaces are descaled and disinfected, and are free from
pathogens, such as Legionella.
Clever solutions
Legion is delivered as a gel and foam. These formats were
chosen with the view to reduce risk and discomfort during use.
Unlike conventional sprays, Legion products are not dispersed
into the atmosphere when used and are applied on a surface
in a controlled, targeted way.
Manufactured by Tristel
Legion is manufactured by Tristel, an accredited manufacturer
that complies with ISO 9001:2008, ISO 13485:2003, European
Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC and European Biocidal
Products Regulations (EU) 528/2012.
For more than 20 years, Tristel has been applying its unique
technologies in areas requiring high-level disinfection
and sporicidal efficacy. These applications include the
decontamination of invasive semi-critical medical devices
such as endoscopes and the high-level disinfection of surfaces
within critical areas such as operating theatres, isolation units
and intensive care wards.
Proven effective
An effective blend for maximum efficacy
Legion has been tested in independent,
UKAS accredited labs and is
bactericidal according to EN1276 and
EN13727 in 5 minutes against:
The Legion formulation incorporates benzalkonium chloride as the biocidal active
for disinfection and a phosphoric and sulfamic acid blend for descaling. Phosphoric
acid is typically used to remove rust from surfaces, to which scale can bind, and
provides protection from surface rusting.
• Legionella pneumophila
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• Enterococcus hirae
• Staphylococcus aureus
• Escherichia coli
Sulfamic acid is a comparatively mild acid with excellent descaling properties. On
contact, sulfamic acid dissolves limescale and produces water soluble salts. This
limits re-deposition of limescale. Sulfamic acid does not produce chlorine gas on
contact with hypochlorite based solutions.
Legion’s unique delivery formats enhance performance and increase compliance
Legion foam
Legion foam is unique: The foaming consistency ensures that the solution can cling to a shower head and stay on the surface
for the required contact time of five minutes, even when the shower head is placed in its holder. Legion foam’s performance is
second to none.
Legion foam is available in boxes of 6 x 250ml and is ready to use for descaling and disinfecting of:
• Shower heads
• Taps and sinks
• Small surface in sanitary areas
Legion gel
Legion gel does not run off the surface immediately and as such ensures good surface coverage which helps to achieve excellent
descaling results.
Legion gel is available in boxes of 6 x 750ml. Legion gel can be used neat for descaling and disinfecting of:
• Taps and sinks
• Toilet bowls
• Large surfaces in sanitary areas such as shower doors, walls and floors
Legion gel can also be used to prepare a dilute solution for
prolonged soaking of shower heads. To prepare the dilution,
apply a dilution ratio of 1 parts of Legion gel to 70 parts of
water or 4 green bottle caps in 5L of water. This working
solution is effective at removing limescale and destroying
bacteria and yeasts.
Read user instructions carefully before use. Do not exceed 5 minutes contact time. Rinse surfaces with fresh mains water.
Legionnaires’ disease
At least 9,000 people in the UK contract Legionnaires’ disease every year. It is thought that this number may be underreported because many sufferers are misdiagnosed due to symptoms being very similar to the common flu. Legionnaires’
disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia, causing mortality in 12 per cent of all cases [1].
The greatest risk of contracting Legionella infection derives from hot and cold water systems. The water systems deliver
bacteria through taps and shower heads via inhalation or aspiration from water droplets. Legionella bacteria thrive in
temperatures between 20-45 degrees Celsius, and if stagnant water is left to sit at these temperatures it provides an ideal
breeding ground for bacteria to multiply [1].
Stagnant water also leads to the formation of limescale; as moisture evaporates, deposits from solidified calcium carbonate
and magnesium carbonate are left on surfaces. Limescale deposits create favourable conditions in which Legionella and
other bacterial species, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, can grow [2].These bacteria attach to surfaces and colonise
creating a biofilm (sometimes referred to as slime). Biofilm acts as protective layer for microorganisms. In this environment
the bacterial cells can change and can become antibiotic resistant.
Limescale and biofilm can protect bacteria from temperatures and chemical biocides that would otherwise kill them if they
were freely suspended in water [3].
Everyone is susceptible to infection from Legionnaires’ disease. The risk increases with age, however, some people are
at higher risk than others. People with cancer, a weakened immune system, lung, heart or liver conditions are at higher
risk and are more likely to experience a severe form of the infection. These individuals in healthcare facilities such as
hospitals and nursing homes are highly susceptible, so it is essential that infection control is rigorously maintained in these
environments.
Tristel Legion is proven effective against Legionella and other harmful bacteria such as P. aeruginosa, demonstrating a
99.999% kill rate (equating to a 5 log reduction) when subject to European Standard testing. Legion is also an excellent
descaler, removing all traces of limescale when applied to sanitary fittings such as taps, shower heads and hoses.
When used routinely, Legion prevents limescale build-up and reduces bio burden load, reducing the infection risk to all
individuals.
