What’s Coming Up in Transformational Learning Program Wednesday June 13th - Self care and parenting through stress facilitated by Renee Lindstrom Shannon Kowalko, Promotions and Community Relations Manager of Times Colonist Our Carbon Footprint on Mother Earth is Getting Smaller! Last year, we took a Climate Smart Inventory to measure our carbon footprint. We recognized areas to reduce waste and implemented an extensive recycling program. This year, we re-measured our carbon footprint and we have achieved a 33% reduction! We have gone from net emissions of 131 metric tonnes of CO2 to just under 88! This is not to mention that we also divert enough waste from the landfill to account for the avoidance of 732 tonnes of CO2 equivalent! Wednesday July 11th - Job searching and career planning facilitated by Janet Rowley Our biggest reduction has been in the amount of garbage - and we have made some gains in electricity as well by retro-fitting our lighting at both our Cook and Pandora stores. When you make a donation to WIN, you can feel good about both community support and environmental protection. WIN’s Self-Sufficiency Program Since November, we have issued just over $13,000 to women to support their journey towards self sufficiency in their lives! Here is a recent quote from one of our program recipients: “WIN’s Self-Sufficiency Program is like dollars from heaven! I am a single mom that has been out of the workforce for 8 years. WIN’s willingness to back me has really boosted my confidence. If they believe I can do it, then maybe I really can. I know that there are many women out there who really care about women like me.” Pembroke Mews Gives Housing a Hand-Up We all know that when the roof is leaking or other things go wrong at home, the expression “comfort of home” no longer exists. Whether you rent or own, you understand how expensive it is to maintain a home. Pembroke Mews, located at the corner of Pembroke and Government Streets, was just completed recently and now offering 25 bachelor and one bedroom units to low-income, working singles. The City of Victoria contributed $250,000 to the project through its housing trust fund since housing affordability is the region’s biggest challenge. Like us on Facebook!
