Quality of the public spaces in Zuidhorn receives an impetus
The centre of Zuidhorn has undergone a number of fundamental developments. The
traffic structure is modified, and buildings and a new method of parking have been
developed on three squares - the Overtuinen, Dorpsvenne and Holtplein. This offered
an opportunity to design an individual layout for the squares and, in so doing, giving
the quality of the public spaces an impetus. The development of the squares and the
changed traffic situation has offered the opportunity to draw up a cohesive outline
plan for the reorganisation of the public spaces in the entire centre of Zuidhorn.

Cohesion
The design insures a spatial cohesion in the centre. Within this plan each location
has received an individual character, thereby creating a convivial recreational area in
the entire centre. The historic structure and the existing village qualities of Zuidhorn
served as the basis of the design of a high-grade layout for the public spaces that will
be suitable for many years to come. The character of the plan’s public spaces largely
derives from the use of brick clinker paving with accents of natural stone and the use
of trees, where possible.
