Did you know: In November of 1919, President Wilson declared the 11th day of the 11th month Armistice Day, a day to commemorate the ending of World War I on November 11, 1918, also known as the end of “the war to end all wars.” When the United States Congress recognized the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the end of World War I on June 4, 1926, they proclaimed: “Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations.” Self-reflection: How do you think the United States and the people abide by this recommendation for this day? Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday in the United States on May 13, 1938 to honor World War I veterans and world peace. With the conclusion of World War II, Congress felt Armistice Day should commemorate all war veterans, hereby declaring November 11th as Veteran’s Day.
