VETERANS OASIS PARK TOUR
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7
Tour this great
community park
located just south
of the San Tan
Freeway in a
semi-rural area of
Chandler. Wide,
groomed trails wind among the many recharge ponds
on this 100 plus acreage. Walk your pooch, jog, take
a casual stroll, have a picnic, watch birds, jackrabbits,
cottontails, coyotes, fish in the stocked “lake,” or
maybe spend some time studying the local flora and
fauna in the education center. VOP is family friendly
and has several picnic ramadas and clean restrooms.
Interested? Put on your walking shoes, grab a hat,
sunglasses, snack, water, binoculars and join us on
this morning outing.
We’ll leave Golden Vista at 9 a.m. and plan to return
prior to 1 p.m. Volunteer drivers are needed for this
free outing. Please try to arrange your own carpool
but contact Dale at lot 142 if you need help getting a
ride. Check the bulletin board notice for meeting
time and place and be sure to use the sign-up sheet.
COMEDY SHOW
The February Comedy Club Show is scheduled for
Saturday, February 22nd.The show comes on the
heels of the January 18th show which played to a
crowd of over 350. The club is composed of a cast
of over 30 members participating in the various
skits, readings and vignettes with another 1520 assisting in various
roles as stage crew,
sound and light support,
costume and prop responsibilities as well as
ticket taking and refreshment providers contributing to the show’s success.
The up-coming show will again provide an evening
of fun and laughter for the guests.
The club which meets each Wednesday in the
Apache Room at 12:45 PM traces its history to the
very beginning of the resort. In addition to the show
and club meetings, two stage rehearsals are also
scheduled. Parties interested in becoming involved
with the club are urged to contact Assistant Director, Al Steagall (671-2802). Additional staff is always needed and welcome. A third show of the
2013-14 season is planned for Sunday, March 16.
All proceeds from the shows are utilized for ballroom improvements, local charities, and other resort needs.

on Friday when we stop pre-selling. If you miss

The Sawdust Barn is
in full swing. We are
open daily Monday thru
Friday from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Arrangements can
be made with a monitor to have a Saturday
work day if you need one. The Sawdust Barn is
always closed on Sundays and Holidays.
Our membership meets for a short business
session each month on the 2nd Tuesday of the
month. We also host a Wednesday BBQ on the
4th Wednesday each month on the Patio. Along
with your favorite BBQ items, we will again
have our delicious Taco Salads.
Be sure to buy your tickets in advance for our
fund-raising Pancake Breakfast on Saturday,
February 15th. Menu: Pancakes, scrambled

If you are new to our Resort, visitor or
owner, be aware the we are proud of
our Recycling Program. If you are new to recycling,
lots of people will help you get into the habit every
Thursday. Set out your stuff and let the recycling
company do the rest. You will find it so easy and feel
so good about helping save us money and create
jobs.
First, be sure to recycle only those items listed on
the hand-out you received when you checked in to
the park. Please keep plastic bags, styrofoam, bubble wrap and yard waste out of your recycling.
Those items must go into the trash: you can return
the bags to the grocery store.
Place your recycling in an obvious sturdy plastic container (not a bag) or clearly labeled recycling box.
Recycling can still be carried to the bins located in
the maintenance area. Boxes should be broken
down if possible, or left for a volunteer to flatten.
Please don't throw recyclable material into the trash
dumpster.

the Sewing Room. 4 or 5
classes are scheduled and in
progress. More classes will
be available in February and
March. Come and learn
something new or old. The
pattern and fabric for the
March raffle quilt will soon
be chosen and classes will begin for learning the
new block.
Sew-A Smile, held Jan. 17 and18 was a success. It is
always a labor of love and fun besides.

full session and would love to

LADIES TEXAS HOLD’EM
The fitness center had a very successful
BBQ on January 8 and the committee
thanks all the volunteers for their hard
work.
We have removed some of the old equipment in the Fitness Center. There is a list
of proposed equipment posted in the fitness center and we would like residents to
sign their name and lot# to the particular
piece of equipment you would find beneficial.
Again if people want to donate they may
do so with the committee members or at
the activities office: $5.00 monthly or
$25.00 per season per lot.
The fitness center is available to all residents.
Our next meeting is Friday Feb. 7 at 10:00
am in the Apache Room with the BBQ held
on Wednesday Feb. 12.

As our members return and new
ones join, January has started off
very busy in the Computer
Room. Our Wednesday meetings,
as well as our Classes, are more diverse with interest moving to IPads,
Tablets, Smart Phones, etc. We still
cover necessary subjects of interest
to us all including Windows 8, however, many new different Classes
have been added. The Classes, as well as times and
dates, are posted on the Computer Board in the Mail Hallway and on www.gvrv.us website.
Dues this year are $20 per household and there is No
Charge for Classes taught by In Park teachers. Watch
Channel 7 to see who our Wednesday speaker will
be. On Jan. 15 Gary Stanley spoke to a full house of
over 100 members. Last year he spoke about the importance of Safe Computing. This is very important and

friend that works for
Michaels in New Jersey and is coming out
to go to the bead show in Tucson. Maybe
she will have suggestions for us. She is a
teacher at Michaels.

ALUMINUM CAN RECYCLE
Picking up your pop cans curbside
has begun on Thursdays. Be sure to
have them separated from the rest
of your recycling and out before 9:30
am. Of course, the cans must be
emptied. You can take them down to
the Maintenance area if you prefer. Just don’t throw them
away as the Christian Women’s Group using the proceeds
from selling the cans for local charities.

We extend a warm welcome to all new arrivals to the Resort.
Remember that the shuffleboard courts are available for all residents to use. A lot of work goes into preparing and maintaining the playing surfaces of the boards. For anyone interested in using the courts, the club executives are very willing to assist you in preparing the boards for use and applying
the necessary wax as well as the necessary clean up after your use. A list of the club executives is on the bulletin board
opposite the mail boxes.
The club will be offering playing instructions for those interested in learning the basics of shuffleboard. Our next two
day instruction will be hosted Tues. Feb. 18 and Wed. Feb. 19, 2014. Please sign up on sheets posted in the mail area
or in the shuffleboard shack.
Jackpot play takes place Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. This is a time to socialize with fellow residents. Sign up
ahead in the shuffleboard shack and come with your dime to have a morning of fun.
It’s been a busy time for all shufflers with various leagues in full swing again. Saturday league has started up with 10
teams consisting of six members each playing on Saturday mornings for nine weeks. This culminates with a tournament in March and our Annual Meeting.
Winners of recent tournaments around the valley included the following from Golden Vista:
• Marg Mowat placed 3rd in championship at Pacific Mobile
• At the Fiesta Christmas cash tournament, Jim Gates took first in championship
• Ken Pollard took 3rd in championship
• Don Holmes took 2nd in consolation
In Sunland Springs Village Split Singles, the following GV Shufflers placed as follows:
• Lora Hertig came in 3rd in Championship
• Verena Wardley placed 4th in Ladies Consolation
• Ken Pollard placed 3rd in Men’s Consolation
Sessions for new shufflers learning the game have been very successful. 24 people took the lessons
held Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, 2014. The club will once again provide lessons on Feb. 18 and 19, 2014.

We have a Fun Afternoon once a month which also has proven very popular, usually fill all 16 boards. We provide
wine and pop, everyone brings a snack and has an entertaining game of shuffleboard. It includes veteran players and

us.

The month of January has come and gone along with the Billiard Club annual steak dinner. Once again over 500
people were served another great Swiss Steak dinner on January 14, 2014. A big thank you to the Activity Office
staff for selling out our dinner again this year.
This dinner would not have been the success it was without the many volunteers giving the many hours it
takes to put on the dinner. A big THANK YOU goes to each and every one of you. The Billiard Club looks
forward to serving the dinner again in 2015 and suggests you buy your tickets as soon as they go on sell
next December as they go fast. See you all next year.
The East Mesa League Men’s Golden Vista team has completed six weeks of league play and remains in
first place in the league with 101 wins and 61 losses, staying 3 games ahead of the second place team.
The Superstition Men’s Golden Vista team has completed seven weeks of league play and is currently in
first place with 235 wins and 143 losses. On January 8, 2014, the team of John DiBiase and Gary Larson
won the team of the week honors with 9 wins and 0 losses in league play. Continue with the great playing

The Billiard Club holds men’s tournament every Friday morning and mixed (ladies and men)
tournament every Sunday afternoon. They encourage anyone in the park to come and play in it,

February will be
another busy
month for the
members of our
club. We have
make and take dipper dishes class on Feb 5th at
6:30pm Come make 3 dishes and enjoy the fun of
painting your own design on them. There will be
members there to help you with it so you do not
need to know how to do ceramic work. There is
still room for a couple more people.
Our members will be having a class that is a bowl
filled with sunflowers in Feb also. Stop in at the
end of February and see the finished project. We
are busy with painting the soup bowls for the soup
kitchen event for next fall. This is always a fun
time for the members, we make a party out of the
evening of painting and visiting .
We will have a class on how to make story tellers
out of clay, this will be a class for members and is
taken out of the resort. We also have classes
scheduled for horse hair, ragu and sagar that will
be taken out of the resort.
Our season salad luncheon is Feb. 20th, our
members are encouraged to invite a friend. We
enjoy the time to just visit and listen to good music
along with all the great salads.
We want to thank all those who came to visit our
club during the open house that the activities
scheduled on Jan 18th. We love showing off our
work and how the different things are done, we
hope you did too.

Welcome Back Vets who returned January
1st. We look forward to seeing you at one of
our upcoming meetings. By the way we
meet twice a month now, the first and third
Monday of each month at 1400 (2pm if you
forgot) hours in the Navajo Room, we have
the room starting at 1:30 so getting there
early allows for camaraderie. It is not necessary to attend every meeting, however we
would like to meet you and include you in our
activities when you can help out.
Our current commitment for activities
is: Hold a 50/50 raffle at the Wednesday
BBQ's and the monthly Country Store. And,
serve breakfast on a Saturday morning in
March. Details are still in the planning stage
for the March breakfast. Our goal is "Serve
our Veterans and Our Community".
We had a 50/50 raffle drawing at the first
Monday morning Chit Chat in January from
our December raffles. The winner took
home $142.50 and the charity we support will get $114.00. We voted to give the
first two raffle drawing proceeds to
the, Stand Down for Veterans that serves
Maricopa and Pinal Counties.
Thank You, to those who volunteered to support our 50/50 raffles and the wiener cook off
at the open house on Saturday January
18th. And a special thank you to Bill and Joe
for being in charge of the 50/50 raffle and
cook off, their success was because Golden
Vista veterans cared and helped out.
We now have a full set of ceremonial flags,
scabbards, pole stands, and flag storage
bags. Thank you, Helen Borner (Sewing
Room Member), for the seamstress skills
used to make our flag storage bags and other sewing projects. And to the Wood Shop
members who designed and constructed the
flag stands.
We look forward the rest of the year and
more veteran participation. Especially in the
St Patty's Day parade. We hope to have a
large contingent of veterans behind our Honor Guards leading the parade.

Paul Schmeil – Lot 360
Twelve years ago, Marylin and I came to Golden Vista where we first rented for one month and then purchased our lot 360. We have 5 children and 10 grandchildren. Marylin and I will be celebrating our 50th
anniversary in August. We enjoy hiking and plan to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in April. We
also enjoy traveling, kayaking, playing bridge, and enjoying our children and grandchildren. After completing my Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering, I started my career as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force where I served for almost eight years. While in the Air Force, I completed a Master’s
degree in Business Administration. In my final few months in the Air Force, I was recruited by Kaiser
Aluminum for an engineering position on the Island of Jamaica. I spent 30 years with Kaiser in various
engineering positions at three locations—Jamaica, Louisiana, and Tacoma, Washington. While in Tacoma, I joined the Air Force Reserves and retired as Colonel.
In 2004, I chaired a Committee to develop a website for the Resort. Over 10 years, I have continued to
develop web pages and update the Resort’s web site. I am currently serving as secretary for the Board
of Directors and have been instrumental in keeping the meetings running smoothly by developing good
agendas and by writing proposed motions before the Board meetings. All the current Board members
appreciate my contribution and support me in my campaign for the Board. I ask for your vote to continue
to help Golden Vista progress into the future.
Ginger Scobie, 315 East Emerald
Walt and I purchased our lot in 1994 and have been winter residents since 1997. I served as Associate
Coordinator and then Sewing Room Coordinator from 1999 to 2003. I served as a member of the Planning & Development Committee from 12/07 to 3/10 when I was appointed to fill a 1 year vacated term on
the Board of Directors. I was elected to a full term on the Board in 2011, and have served as the Treasurer since 2011. I have a BS in Vocational Home Economics and an MAT in Home Economics. I taught
high school Home Economics and Mathematics for 22+ years. Walt and I owned and operated apartment buildings for 25+ years.
During my time on the Board, many important decisions have been made. I would like the opportunity to
continue working for the Golden Vista Community as we face some serious issues in the future.
I welcome input and comments from all residents. I promise to always base my vote upon the greatest
good for the greatest number for the long term. Thank you for your vote.
Jack Taylor: I Am Running For the Board of Directors
My wife Dawana and I live at #78 Jacknife .We first came to Golden Vista in 2005, we purchased our
first lot in 2007 and have enjoyed our lifestyle here ever since. We have two boys and two daughters.
My work career started in 1968 as a firefighter with the City of Vancouver Fire Dept. While employed as
a Firefighter I started a Marine repair business. I also took courses in business management, employee
relations and advanced firefighting technics. In 1986 I was hired by North American Fire Guardian as a
consultant for a new alternative to a fire extinguishant called Halon. I became a Director of the company
and spent five years travelling on and off to England, Isle of Mann and Italy teaching corporate entities
the use of this Halon alternative.
My experience with Strata Counsels / Board of Directors started in the town of Ashcroft B.C., Canada in
a 50 unit townhouse project and I was a member of that counsel/board for four years. We were the formulating council for the strata.
Upon retiring from the Fire Dept.as Captain in 1998 Dawana and I moved to Vancouver Island to a strata community called Craig Bay and I sat on that council / board for three years. We were also formulating a new council for the strata.
We then moved to Schooner Cove and I was elected to the Schooner House council / board while we
spearheaded a $2 million revitalization project. I was involved in the reroofing of the complete building
and renewal of all balconies, railings, windows and superstructure.
I have served on the GV ARC committee for the past 5 years and feel this has helped me immensely to
understand the rules and regulations governing our resort and upgrading the outdated infrastructure.
In running for election to become a board member, I am bringing to you my business experience, practical experience from sitting on other councils / boards and my safety experience from my many years in
the Fire Dept. and I ask for your vote to help steer GV through improvements to our Resort.

We’re having a mild winter
so far this season, so the
flowers are looking good.
The Golden Vista Landscape crew and all of the
volunteers are keeping the
beds in good shape. The
roses have been pruned
and should start blooming
in a few weeks. A few of the bushes that were not
doing very well were taken out and will be replaced in a few weeks when the roses start coming into the nurseries.
The greenbelt is looking better than it has in
years. If you’re new in the resort, you’ll find that
it’s a nice place to walk.
If you’re interested in helping out, you can call Bill
at 2990.
The new bells have arrived and we have
six new ringers this year.We will be
practicing every Tuesday in the Game
Room.The new ringers will start at 12:30joined by the experienced ringers at 1:15.
Marlene Perkins used the Bell Tree to
perform for the Chapel service on Jan.
26th. Others of us will provide music for
the Feb.23rd service and on Sunday,
March 9th all the ringers will be playing
"In the Garden" in memory of Peg
McQuarrie as her husband Bill gave us
money to purchase new music.
We also hope to participate in the Gospel
Show this year.

The Community Garden is
producing! On January
2nd, we harvested 3 gallon
bags of mixed lettuce and
spinach and 2 gallon bags
of radishes and delivered
them to the Apache Junction Food Bank. We'll
be harvesting and replanting radishes and lettuce every other week or so. The peas and
beets are healthy and growing but won't be harvestable for a month or so.
Stop by and visit the garden, outside the South
Laundry. If you'd like to indulge your "inner gardener", contact Bob Stone, Jan Olstad or Bill
Vandermay. We'd love to have your help!

To keep the shelves from becoming overcrowded and to keep current books on hand,
many older or slightly worn volumes are
removed and donated to the Apache Junction
public library.
The honor system is used to check out booksmake your selection, take it home and enjoy.
Return the books to the basket located to the
right of the doors.
Please do not re-shelve books or label them
yourselves. The library volunteers will do this
for you. We hope you enjoy the library as
much as we enjoy keeping it stocked and neat
