Welcome to Welland
WELCOME to the City of Welland, one
of the truly authentic recreational canal
cities in Canada. Located on the banks
of the Welland Recreational Waterway also known as the Old Canal - Welland
is nestled in the heart of picturesque
Niagara Region.
Each year, visitors are attracted to the area’s
natural beauty, as they enjoy our annual
festivals, quaint downtown restaurants,
heritage buildings, waterfront music
concerts, multi-cultural attractions,
year-round sports competitions, and
outdoor events.
New residents to Welland can take
advantage of reasonable housing prices,
excellent schools in both English and
French, over 400 acres of scenic parks,
and state-of-the-art sports and recreational
facilities. Welland is also home to Niagara
College Canada and is conveniently a short
distance from Brock University.
Welcome To
WELLAND
Known for scenic cycling paths, and the
Welland International Flatwater Centre
(WIFC), which hosts major international
sporting events; Welland is emerging as
a sport tourism destination. The WIFC
is dynamic with two water courses set in
411 acres of parkland and 272 acres of
waterway. The North course is the choice
to host the 2016 Canadian Dragon Boat
Championships and 2016 Row Ontario
Championships. Also complimenting
the recreational waterway is an outdoor
amphitheatre, which lures people during
Discover WELLAND 2016
the summer months to marvel in an array
of lively entertainment shows.
Youngs Sportsplex is the City’s newest
addition to an assortment of sport venues.
This modern facility houses indoor and
outdoor soccer fields, four indoor tennis
courts, and a sport performance centre.
The facility is becoming the venue of choice
for recreational and competitive athletes
because it offers everything from Ultimate
Frisbee to Bubble Soccer.
Welland’s historical Bridge 13 became a
tourist attraction in 2015 when it lit up for
the first time with a spectacular light show
the evening of Canada Day. During the
shipping season of 1972 Bridge 13 lifted
for the last time. The canal was rerouted,
leaving a scenic recreational waterway and
venue for international sporting events.
Located in downtown Welland, Bridge 13
has transformed over the years becoming
a symbolic landmark for Welland. In 2014
the Bridge received needed repairs and
was repainted. In 2015 the bridge was
given LED lighting to further enhance the
commemoration of events and celebrations.
Find the festive lighting schedule by
following Bridge 13 on Facebook or liking
it on Twitter.
Whether you are a sports enthusiast,
naturalist, cultural adventurer, music
lover, or history buff, Welland offers
something for everyone. Your next visit
could last a lifetime.

SITES
To See
Located in the heart of downtown Welland, Bridge 13 has become a landmark for locals
and tourists. The attraction connects Welland to the downtown area and stretches
across the Recreational Waterway. The Bridge was repainted in 2015 and decorated
in LED lighting to commemorate events and festivities. The bridge lights up from 10
p.m. to midnight. To check the lighting schedule visit Bridge 13’s Facebook Page or
follow it on Twitter.
Welland County Courthouse (Cross and East Main Streets)
Designed in 1855 by Kivas Tully, the Welland County Courthouse opened in 1856
and was used to house the first Welland County Council meeting. Made of Queenston
limestone, it is a must-see for architectural and historical enthusiasts. Take a stroll
through judicial history and visit the Court House Museum on the second floor.
Welland Historical Museum
The Welland Museum is located in the historically designated Carnegie Building, and
features both permanent and changing exhibits that highlight the history of Welland
and Pelham from pre-history to present. Offering a yearly schedule of special events
and both educational and recreational programming, the museum also includes an
interactive children’s gallery that allows younger visitors to experience hands-on play
and discovery. Whether you are seeking a special gift, souvenir, or popular “All Welland
Good” t-shirts, the gift shop contains affordable and unique handmade items from
across the Niagara Region. Please visit the website for more information on exhibits and
upcoming events at www.wellandmuseum.ca
Central Fire Hall (Cor. Hellems & Division Sts.)
The Central Fire Hall, completed in 1920, is a unique example of early twentieth
century Edwardian Classical style designed by Walter W. LaChance, while still
incorporating the prominent features of the “old time” red brick fire stations
of the late 1800’s. The most unusual elements of its design are its basilica plan, a
rectangle with hexagonal ‘apse’ at either end and its siting at a 45 degree angle across
the property. The building features a high brick drying tower fitted with a four faceted
clock and a Greek acroterion, resembling old fashioned fire helmets, above each of
the four dormers. (Pictured on page 10)

Hiking and Cycling on Merritt Island
Outdoor enthusiasts marvel at the beauty and serenity of Merritt Island. The island is
a natural paradise and part of the Greater Niagara Circle Route, which offers a paved
trail suitable for walking, bicycling, or in-line skating. Natural trails also run along the
Welland River for those up to a challenging run or walk. Merritt Island is a place where
you can connect with the outdoors, experience local art, or enjoy a packed lunch.
Wood Carvings by J.P. Gauthier
When visiting Merritt Island, keep your
eyes open for local artist J.P. Gauthier’s
wood carvings. These exquisite pieces of
work blend into the natural environment
and compliment the landscape. Gauthier’s
art is compelling and establishes a mystical
flow of nature across the island. Have fun
discovering these beautiful works of art.
The first settlement in the area dates back to 1788. In
1829, it was known as Aqueduct - literally because a
wooden aqueduct was built to carry the Welland Canal
over the Welland River. In 2008, the City celebrated
its 150th Anniversary as an incorporated municipality.
The Rod Dowling Sculpture Park is located along the canal near the Welland
Community Wellness Complex. It currently features three sculptures by the famous
artist Rod Dowling. These sculptures are named “Listeners”, “The Aqueduct”, and
“The Knot” which all represent Welland’s shipping and industrial past. We hope to
have more sculptures in years to come.
Golf
Welland is home to some of the most picturesque golf courses in Southern Ontario,
including the Scottish Link-Style Hunter’s Pointe (905-714-4659).
Other courses include:
Pelham Hills Golf and Country Club

Water Park Golf and Country Club

Welland Canal
Memorial Monument
Located in Merritt Park, the fountain
and bronze statues were created by
world-renowned artist Bas DeGroot to
commemorate the hard-working immigrants
who helped to build the Welland Canal.
Developed by the Welland Heritage Council
and Multicultural Centre.

Off Leash Dog Park
Coming to Welland for a visit doesn’t mean you have to leave the canines at home.
The City is proud to offer a leash free dog park that separates the small dogs from
the large dogs. Enjoy a visit to the park with your furry family member. Located at
the corner of Prince Charles Drive and Ontario Road.

sporting history, and contemporary culture.
Scuba Park
Parks and Gardens
Known officially as the Rose City, Welland
is home to over 400 acres of parkland. View
the crystal reflection on the still ponds and
listen to the songbirds announce spring.
Pause and absorb the fragrance of the wild
rose, or bask in the sunlight. Use all of
your natural senses. You can find all these
experiences at Welland’s Chippawa Park,
Merritt Park on King Street, or Merritt
Island in historical downtown Welland.
Outdoor Ice Rinks
Welland has many outdoor ice rinks for
skaters to enjoy and keep active. Chippawa
Park’s outdoor ice rink is one of Welland’s
largest and busiest attractions. Skaters
can lace-up in the heated changing area,
equipped with accessible washrooms.

enjoy a picnic lunch and stroll along the
breath-taking gardens.
Welland
Farmers’ Market
Welland Farmers’ Market symbolizes
over 100 years of small town tradition
with a homegrown flavour. Vendors
from across the area provide a range
of produce reflecting Welland’s
diverse ethnic roots. Situated in
the heart of downtown, the market
operates Saturdays year round from
6:00am-12:00pm.
Our market
features a demonstration kitchen that
serves breakfast during market day.

Located at the Lincoln Street docks, the Scuba Park
is a great way to enjoy the waterway from down
under during the day and at night. The park features
a submerged boat, a sunken car, as well as an
underwater training area for adventure enthusiasts.
The Welland Recreational Waterway is tested daily
and is cleaner than a public pool, creating ideal
conditions for underwater exploring. The Welland

spot and attracts hundreds of divers annually.

Welland Crowland War Memorial
Located in beautiful Chippawa Park, The Cenotaph is
unique because it departs from the usual design of a
single soldier so common on other monuments from
that vintage. Detailed and beautiful, the monument
incorporates stylized elements of the Canadian
landscape - red pine and wheat sheaves - along with
the representation of a WWI trench mortar and two
heroic figures. A soldier and a woman are featured to
symbolize the “Service and Sacrifice” element of war.
Dedicated not only to those who fought, but to those
who supported the war effort at home.
Cook’s Mills
Peace Garden
The Battle of Cook’s Mill was the last battle
fought in Niagara during the War of 1812.
The battle took place in 1814, and is the
inspiration behind the newly constructed
Peace Garden. Cherished by residents, visitors, and history enthusiasts; the garden
is a reminder of 200 years of Peace. The
Peace Garden is located at the corner of
Lyon’s Creek and Doan’s Ridge Roads.

grows with anticipation as athletes from Niagara, and all over the world flock to our
venues. The Rose City is proud to be a platform for building world class competitors.
Chippawa Park Community Centre and Beach Volleyball
As Welland grows into a progressive sport tourism destination, the facilities continue
to grow and accommodate a variety of sport disciplines. Chippawa Park now offers a
multipurpose accessible Community Centre over looking four competition quality sanded
volleyball courts. The Community Centre has a large entertainment room with a warming
kitchen and gas fireplace, while downstairs offers a small meeting room and gas fireplace.

Sportspex is unique because it offers a wide variety of sports. Competitive and

The Welland International
Flatwater Centre (WIFC)
The WIFC venue rivals top sport facilities in the world with infrastructure exceeding
current international standards for hosting and for accessibility. The WIFC extends
beyond physical structures; it is building a sense of pride within the community, it is
connecting a larger flatwater community with clubs of all disciplines, it is growing a
family of volunteers, and bringing people together toward a common goal. The facility
creates positive spirit through the City of Welland as the hopes and dreams of future
Canadian Olympians and World Champions become a reality as a direct result of Welland’s
Waterway. The WIFC has and will continue to have, an inspiring rippling effect.

The first ROWONTARIO Championships Regatta was developed through the efforts
of ROWONTARIO’s original 12 member clubs working together to create a Provincial
Championships regatta. The ROWONTARIO Championships is now considered by
many to be the final “warm-up” for crews competing at the Royal Canadian Henley
Regatta that occurs the first week of August in St. Catharines.
The 2016 ROWONTARIO Championships Regatta will be the 48th annual event and is
expected to attract approximately 1000 athletes from 35 clubs from across Ontario and
the United States, ranging from under 17 to above 23 years of age. Be sure to come to the
Welland International Flatwater Centre South Course the weekend of July 23rd – 24th
to catch the racing.
Welland International Flatwater Centre North Course
The drums will beat on the canal again this
August at the Welland International Flatwater
Centre North Course. More than 2,000 athletes
from across Canada will come to Welland to
compete with hopes of being named a National
Champion during Dragon Boat Canada’s 10th
Canadian Dragon Boat Championships.
For more information, visit www.rowontario.ca and www.wifc.ca.
Come celebrate this amazing event with us;
marvel at the fierce competition, absorb the
tradition, and help us welcome the athletes to the waterway. Discover and partake in this
ancient Chinese cultural tradition hosted right here on Welland’s Recreational Waterway.
The Canadian Dragon Boat Championships is the most exciting and competitive dragon
boat event in Canada. This marquee event features crews from the recreational level; all
the way to the athletes who race internationally in age categories from Junior through
Senior C (60+), and includes divisions for University, Breast Cancer Survivors and the
Blind and Partially Sighted crews. We encourage everyone to come out from August 18th
