Chamber newsletter Feb 2013 - Pasadena Chamber of Commerce
www.pasadenachamber.org February, 2013 Vol. 24 No. 2 Mission Statement “Promote Economic Development and Community Growth to ensure the prosperity of Pasadena’s businesses and citizens.” In this issue of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce Newsletter... • Chairman Letter, pg. 1 • Young Guns, pg. 1 • Hispanic Business Council, pg. 2 News from the Pasadena, Texas Chamber of Commerce CHAIRMAN LETTER Dear Friends, There are so many reasons I’ve grown fond of this great city over the past 5 years. The restaurants, fun family activities like the Pasadena Rodeo, the Strawberry Festival and Armand Bayou Nature Center and other cool Gary Nickelson things like 2 live theaters and the Chairman of the Board endless free events put on by the City of Pasadena are just a few things that make this city great. While these are wonderful attributes, another way I like to gauge a city is by the various outreach programs that help those less fortunate souls in our community. Just some of the programs in Pasadena are Project Joy and Hope, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, the Salvation Army, Sarah’s House and Cenikor. I’d like to take some time to highlight just one of them in this newsletter. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth. Since then, they operate in over 126 countries and serve millions of people. Their mission statement is “The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Their message is based on the Bible. It’s MISSION is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.” Major Edward Alonzo and his caring staff carry out this mission with passion. I’ve had the opportunity to sit in on two of their recent board meetings where they give reports on the number of people they help and the new programs they are developing. It’s inspiring to see so many people working so hard to bring a little hope to those who may not receive it anywhere else. It’s through the generous support of individuals and organizations that they are able to reach out to thousands of people throughout the year. If you’d like to help, contact the Chamber of Commerce and they will put you in contact with the right person. The Salvation Army really makes a difference in Pasadena. There are a couple of events coming up. First, on February 21st, the Pasadena Business Expo is being held from 11am until 5pm at the Pasadena Convention Center. Second, a luncheon honoring Commissioner Jack Mormon on March 21st is going to be at the DoubleTree by Hilton at the Hobby Airport location. He’ll give his annual state-of-thecounty address. This is a 6-chamber event, so be sure to make your reservations fast. Young Guns will also be holding their first Happy Hour of the year on March 7 at 6 p.m. at Cullen’s Live, if you are a professional under the age of 40 please join them! Until next month…. Gary Nickelson Join other like-minded young professionals as we kick offff 2013!
