The waves look great across the Surf Coast today with a good-sized
westerly swell and offshore wind. A shallow westerly change is due
into the afternoon, so keep that in mind. Easing surf with an all-day
offshore wind is expected tomorrow, smaller into Saturday. A good
strong westerly swell is then due to build all day Sunday, becoming
larger late as winds hold from the west-northwest. For more

LOCAL legend Daryl Moss is
the latest person to be awarded
a life membership of Jan Juc
Surf Life Saving Club.
The accolade was one of
two
significant
honours
bestowed upon Mr Moss in as
many weeks.
He was also crowned Surf
Life Saving Victoria’s Volunteer of the Year at a recent
Awards of Excellence dinner.
The Graeme Long Medal,
presented by Emergency Services Minister James Merlino,
specifically recognised Mr
Moss’ contribution over the
2015/16 season.
“I was involved with coaching for about 15 years at Jan
Juc and then the last three or
four I’ve got involved in the
Life Saving education, which
has always been key to me,” he
said.
“I thought I actually did less
this year but when you write it
all down I actually did more
because it was in all different
areas.”
The win automatically
nominates Mr Moss, a “doer”
by nature, for Surf Life Saving
Australia’s Volunteer of the
Year award.
“I don’t find it difficult to be
involved, I don’t like to sit
there and see things not happen,” he said.
The 53-year-old competed
in surf lifesaving at a state and
national level as a youngster,
cementing his passion for the
sport.
“I think I’ve clocked up 40odd years in lifesaving,” he
said.
“I always wanted to be a

teacher and didn’t get the

thing where you’re educating
kids and building better people.
“I’m probably giving back
what I got out of it.”
Mr Moss was living in Melbourne but a permanent camper on the Surf Coast when he
first got involved at Torquay
Life Saving Club where his 20year stint earned him a long
service award.
“Then my wife and I bought
a caravan at Jan Juc and then
that resulted in my transferring clubs; I was given the
opportunity to build the Jan
Juc club in a sporting sense,”
he said.
“They didn’t have a coach
so I went over there and put
the foundations in place when
I was in my mid-30s.
“Because Jan Juc is such a
good family-orientated club I
decided to stay there.”
Mr Moss, his wife and two
children, relocated to Jan Juc
permanently around 12 years
ago.

His daughter, Cassandra,
has been a junior representative, trainer, assessor and patrol captain at Jan Juc SLSC.
Cassandra was named Surf
Coast Young Citizen of the
Year on Australia Day 2015 in
recognition for her outstanding leadership and volunteer
work and just recently she returned from a lifesaving stint
in Japan.
Mr Moss was visiting his
son, a surfing instructor in
Canada, when the two awards
were announced.
