Welcome to

Why You’re Going to Like it Here
By Guy Thompson
You really need to be here in person. Sure, the pictures are nice and
the descriptions enticing. Maybe you’ve had people tell you a little bit
about our area. But trust me. You need to actually be here to really
understand what makes this place special.
What will you get to experience? That depends on you, of course. But
for most of us who visit, and I was just a visitor here once myself, it’s the
relaxed pace and old-fashion charm that is slightly out of step with the rest
of the world that makes this a great place to come to.
Part of the charm is the fact that you usually don’t have to look too
hard to find nothing to do around here. This is a lot different than most
places you’ve visited before, and it does take a little getting used to. When
we visit friends, we find ourselves going from place to place looking for
“something to do.” However, when friends and family visit us, we find
ourselves sitting in rockers on the porch of the hotel just chatting. Visiting.
Catching up. And as we chat, we can catch the scent of the latest hay
cutting (you’re never too far from a field – even in town.) There are
interruptions, even during peaceful moments like this – another visitor
asking where to find something or the rhythmic plodding of the horse and
the low rumble of the buggy passing by.
But the interruptions are, in fact, pleasures – the chance to meet a
fellow traveler and find out where they came from and what brought them
here or the moment of reflection of how things once were as the hoof
beats fade.
Meals are great here, too. No need to rush to eat the last piece of
wonderful chicken. Don’t worry – with Family Style dining, they’ll bring
you more. A word of caution, however: save room for the pie. You’ll regret
eating too much chicken or mashed potatoes if you’re too full for that
Peanut Butter Pie (my favorite.) And it’s easy to feel more than satisfied
after any meal here. If you leave hungry, it’s your own fault.
And mealtime continues that opportunity to sit and chat with friends
and family. (Why do you think they call it “Family Style”?) How many
places can you go to these days where the primary appeal is a chance to
sit, eat and just visit? It’s hard to find a place like that – unless you’re
here, that is.

Yoder’s Red Barn Shoppes
25,000 square feet of retail shopping
Every trip to Shipshewana must include a stop at Yoder’s Red Barn Shops. Our
Big Red Barn is like an entire village of shops, all under one roof! Experience our
Country Store year round, for hours of air-conditioned shopping in the summer,
and cozy warm shopping in the winter.
Everyone will find something they love here. Treats for the home … locally
made Amish handcrafted furniture, rustic log furniture and stylish home accent
decorations. Treats for your creative spirit … custom-scented body
products, fabrics, fun fashions and outdoor gear. Treats for your
tummy … hand-rolled pretzels, ice cream and of course, kettle korn.
Kids of all ages will enjoy watching Vernon Miller make old fashioned
kettle korn in his large copper kettle; popping up to 75
pounds of corn a day means warm, fresh samples of this
special treat!
We look forward to seeing you during your next
visit to Shipshewana, as you experience
our Big Red Barn, with something for
everyone, all year round!

Area Information
After all that food, don’t you think it’s time we got up and moved
around? There is plenty to do here, actually. But where to go? You’ll have
a list of places just based on this magazine – and that’s a good start.
They’re all pretty interesting places to go. But be prepared to take some of
those back roads. That’s where you’ll really find LaGrange County. Take
your time to enjoy the sights, sounds and, yes, even the smells.
Want to see some wonderful furniture? A lot of these back roads have
loads of small Amish wood shops. They make everything from birdhouses
to lawn furniture to custom kitchens and plenty in between. And the
fascinating bit is, they don’t use electricity to do any of it. Take a few
moments and stop at one that has a showroom. (A couple of the bigger
ones offer tours.) Can you smell that oak sawdust? Or the fresh finish on
the cherry bedroom suite? You don’t find furniture any fresher than this.
The farms along these Amish Backroads are a sight to themselves.
Large gardens are the norm in most areas of the county, and you’ll often
see the families working together planting, weeding or picking – depending
on what time of the year you visit. If you’re here when the produce is
being picked, you owe it to yourself to stop at a roadside vegetable stand.
(I always go for the sweet corn that was just picked that morning.) You
may also find a baked goods sale set up in front of a home, with a line of
bread or bags of noodles setting out, waiting for to be taken home, though
you might end up eating the bread on the way.
Of course, there’s always some farming going on out here. And
farming is a fragrant activity. (You’ve been warned.) It’s also fascinating.
When did you last see a four or six-horse hitch pulling a plow? Or the
neat rows of the planting disrupted only by the hoof prints? And the
horse-drawn spreader putting down….well, you can smell that, can’t you?
Far better smells are that of freshly turned earth and cut hay. It’s
mandatory to have the windows down to enjoy this.
I don’t know about you, but I love it in the fall when all of the corn
gets stacked up in corn shocks. It looks like a different era, long before too
many machines got involved. This is hard, labor intensive work by hand.
Watch the farmers and their families work for a little bit. You’ll see what
I mean.

Time to park the car for a bit and get out on foot. Many people meet
or exceed their annual quota of walking with a visit to the Shipshewana
Flea Market, the attraction that helped put the town on the map. If you’re
like the majority of visitors, it’s what drew you here to begin with. But
then there are the other shops and sights to you have to see that will bring
you back again. That happens a lot around here. This magazine is chock
full of other things to do, and this is a great time to begin checking some
of them out. If you’re here for just a day or two, you will just be
scratching the surface.
So we’ll walk up into town. Don’t be surprised if someone you don’t
know waves or says hello to you. Get used to it. It’s just that kind of a
place with that kind of folks.
Every place promises to offer something unique, but here, you actually
find things you aren’t likely to find anywhere else. For some of the most
unique items, look up
some of the crafters who
create their work right
here, from model horses
to pottery to leather.
Want to see
LaGrange County at its
finest? Come for one
of the festivals. Every
season has a festival or
two. A couple you don’t
want to miss are the
Maple Syrup Days and
David Rogers Days. Why
these two? With the
former, it’s all-you-can-eat
pancakes and sausage
with pure Maple Syrup –
and again, that chance
to sit around and visit with friends and family. Actually, anything with
“All-You-Can-Eat” in the description is going to be pretty good around
here. The latter is another unique opportunity to see how things were once
done. In this case, it’s LaGrange County in 1845, when things moved a bit
slower – something this festival manages to portray quite nicely.
But we’ve got other festivals, too. There’s Shipshewana’s Mayfest
as spring is warming up, Fourth of July in Topeka in the middle of the
summer and, just as things are growing chilly again in the fall, the centuryold Corn School in LaGrange. Some of the smaller towns in the county
have their own festivals, which are great celebrations of what a small town
should be. Each festival is as unique as the town it’s held in, so I’d recommend trying them all.
I know I said it’s pretty easy to find nothing to do around here. And
maybe that’s all you want to do. But, as you can see in this magazine,
there’s plenty to do. And I mean more than just eating – though I wouldn’t
blame you for doing a lot of that while you’re here. If it’s just two of you,
take this time to relax and enjoy the slower pace that is prevalent around
here. Families, make your list from the “Attractions” listing and have some
fun together, including playing in the waves, seeing some amazing cars,
catching a show or riding a carousel. There are some things to do here that
you just can’t do anywhere else.
Here is your chance to travel the Amish Backroads and discover why I
like it here. And, hopefully, you’ll discover all the reasons why you like it
here, too – and can’t wait to come back.
