www.merce.barcelona Miguel Gallardo #Mercè16 Welcome to our city’s great festivity! Folklore, the new technologies, talent, celebration... These are just some of the thousand and one faces of La Mercè, a time when the people of Barcelona, men, women and children, take to the streets to celebrate the city’s festa major festivity. Come and immerse yourself in the most authentic essence of the Barcelonan spirit at a festival where you can discover surprising folklore traditions and rich, diverse festive imagery, as well as gazing into the sky in wonder at the magic of a magnificent firework display. La Mercè is, of course, tradition, folklore, but it is also music, circus, dance, street theatre and much more. Because La Mercè is a festival of festivals, with a programme ranging from latest sounds in pop, rock and electronic music, presented by Barcelona Acció Musical (BAM), to the most recent productions by companies from Catalonia and around the world in the Mercè Arts de Carrer (MAC) street art festival, where the spotlight is on the new forms which dance, music and culture in general are taking in our cities today. And, this year more than ever, Barcelona’s great festa major is also a festival of technology. Internet plays an important role, connecting, in real time, different Mercè venues to create shows performed simultaneously in several places and demonstrating the potential of the new technologies to enable citizen participation. Because this year’s Mercè, which not only occupies all the traditional festival spaces but also extends to new sites (from La Trinitat Park to the Fabra i Coats Art Factory), is a festival for everyone, made by everyone. Among other things, you will see how local people have made striking contributions to the decoration and programme at La Trinitat Park, how an artist invites us to construct great buildings with him in the Ciutadella Park and how, here and there, your participation is needed to make the celebrations a success. Come and sample this participative Mercè, one packed with fine artists from around the world. From our country, from abroad and, particularly, from Paris, a sister city that has always been a reference point for the people of Barcelona. This year, the French capital is the guest city at La Mercè and will give festival-goers a glimpse of its many talents. Come, enjoy and, above all, take part. Because, this year more than ever, we are all La Mercè. The full festival programme is available at: www.merce.barcelona The traditional Mercè Have you ever seen a dragon breathing fire from its mouth or an eagle performing a dance? Well, La Mercè will give you a great chance to see these and other traditional festive characters. Giants and “big-heads”, castellers and bastoners all await you. Also, do you like fire? Then make sure you don’t miss the correfoc fire run!
